Claims
- 1. A process for forming an agglomerate for use as a soil conditioning agent, the process comprising:
preparing a preagglomerate containing a water-soluble binder and a particulate calcium source, the particulate calcium source having a particle size distribution such that less than about 1% by weight of the particulate calcium source is +20 mesh, less than about 10% by weight of the particulate calcium source is −20 +100 mesh and less than about 25% by weight of the particulate calcium source is −100 +200 mesh Tyler Standard Sieve Series; and pelletizing the preagglomerate to form the agglomerate.
- 2. A process as set forth in claim 1 wherein the particulate calcium source is selected from the group consisting of limestone, dolomitic limestone, gypsum, lime, hydrated lime, cement kiln dust, lime kiln dust, manure ash and mixtures thereof.
- 3. A process as set forth in claim 1 wherein the particulate calcium source has a particle size distribution such that at least about 75% by weight of the particulate calcium source is −200 mesh Tyler Standard Sieve Series.
- 4. A process as set forth in claim 3 wherein the particulate calcium source has a particle size distribution such that at least about 50% by weight of the particulate calcium source is −250 mesh Tyler Standard Sieve Series.
- 5. A process as set forth in claim 3 wherein the particulate calcium source has a particle size distribution such that at least about 50% by weight of the particulate calcium source is −325 mesh Tyler Standard Sieve Series.
- 6. A process as set forth in claim 1 wherein the particulate calcium source has a particle size distribution such that at least about 90% by weight of the particulate calcium source is −200 mesh Tyler Standard Sieve Series.
- 7. A process as set forth in claim 1 wherein the particulate calcium source has a particle size distribution such that at least about 90% by weight of the particulate calcium source is −250 mesh Tyler Standard Sieve Series.
- 8. A process as set forth in claim 1 wherein the particulate calcium source has a particle size distribution such that at least about 90% by weight of the particulate calcium source is −325 mesh Tyler Standard Sieve Series.
- 9. A process for forming an agglomerate for use as a soil conditioning agent, the process comprising:
preparing a preagglomerate containing a particulate calcium source, a primary plant nutrient source and a water-soluble binder, the particulate calcium source having a particle size distribution such that at least about 90% by weight of the particulate calcium source is −250 mesh Tyler Standard Sieve Series; and pelletizing the preagglomerate to form the agglomerate.
- 10. A process as set forth in claim 9 wherein the particulate calcium source has a particle size distribution such that at least about 90% by weight of the particulate calcium source is −325 mesh Tyler Standard Sieve Series.
- 11. A process as set forth in claim 9 wherein the proportions of the particulate calcium source and the primary plant nutrient source in the preagglomerate are sufficient such that the agglomerate comprises about 15% to about 60% by weight of the particulate calcium source and about 30% to about 80% by weight of the primary plant nutrient source.
- 12. A process as set forth in claim 11 wherein the particulate calcium source is selected from the group consisting of limestone, dolomitic limestone, gypsum, lime, hydrated lime, cement kiln dust, lime kiln dust, manure ash and mixtures thereof.
- 13. A process as set forth in claim 12 wherein the particulate calcium source exhibits a calcium carbonate equivalent value in excess of about 85%.
- 14. A process as set forth in claim 12 wherein the combined concentration of CaO and Ca(OH)2 in the particulate calcium source is at least about 3% by weight.
- 15. A process as set forth in claim 11 wherein the primary plant nutrient source is selected from the group consisting of ammonium nitrate, ammonium sulfate, alkali metal nitrates, urea, rock phosphate, ammonium phosphate, bone meal slag, aluminum phosphate, superphosphate, potash, potassium salts and mixtures thereof.
- 16. A process as set forth in claim 11 wherein the concentration of magnesium-containing compounds in the preagglomerate is such that the magnesium content of the agglomerate is no greater than about 2.5% by weight.
- 17. A process as set forth in claim 16 wherein the concentration of magnesium-containing compounds in the preagglomerate is such that the magnesium content of the agglomerate is no greater than about 1.5% by weight.
- 18. An agglomerate for use as a soil conditioner and provide a source of nutrient values, the agglomerate being formed by pelletizing a preagglomerate containing a particulate calcium source, a primary plant nutrient source and a water-soluble binder, the proportions of the particulate calcium source and the primary plant nutrient source in the preagglomerate being sufficient such that the agglomerate comprises about 15% to about 60% by weight of the particulate calcium source and about 30% to about 80% by weight of the primary plant nutrient source, the particulate calcium source having a particle size distribution such that at least about 90% by weight of the particulate calcium source is −250 mesh Tyler Standard Sieve Series, the agglomerate having a size ranging from −7 to +8 Tyler Standard Sieve Series exhibiting an average green crush strength of at least about 2 pounds.
- 19. An agglomerate as set forth in claim 18 wherein the particulate calcium source has a particle size distribution such that at least about 90% by weight of the particulate calcium source is −325 mesh Tyler Standard Sieve Series.
- 20. An agglomerate as set forth in claim 18 wherein the particulate calcium source is selected from the group consisting of limestone, dolomitic limestone, gypsum, lime, hydrated lime, cement kiln dust, lime kiln dust, manure ash and mixtures thereof.
- 21. An agglomerate as set forth in claim 20 wherein the particulate calcium source exhibits a calcium carbonate equivalent value in excess of about 85%.
- 22. An agglomerate as set forth in claim 18 wherein the combined concentration of CaO and Ca(OH)2 in the particulate calcium source is at least about 3% by weight.
- 23. An agglomerate as set forth in claim 18 wherein the primary plant nutrient source is selected from the group consisting of ammonium nitrate, ammonium sulfate, alkali metal nitrates, urea, rock phosphate, ammonium phosphate, bone meal slag, aluminum phosphate, superphosphate, potash, potassium salts and mixtures thereof.
- 24. An agglomerate as set forth in claim 25 further comprising a micronutrient source, the micronutrient source comprising a source of at least one element selected from the group consisting of iron, copper, boron, selenium, chromium, vanadium, manganese, zinc and molybdenum.
- 25. An agglomerate as set forth in claim 24 wherein the magnesium content of the agglomerate is no greater than about 2.5% by weight.
- 26. An agglomerate as set forth in claim 25 wherein the magnesium content of the agglomerate is no greater than about 1.5% by weight.
- 27. A method for introducing nutrient values into cultivated soil so as to inhibit leaching of the nutrient values from the soil and improve utilization of the nutrient values by plants grown in the soil, the method comprising applying to the soil an agglomerate comprising about 15% to about 60% by weight of a particulate calcium source, about 30% to about 80% by weight of a primary plant nutrient source and a water-soluble binder, the particulate calcium source exhibiting a calcium carbonate equivalent value in excess of about 85% and having a particle size distribution such that at least about 90% by weight of the particulate calcium source is −250 mesh Tyler Standard Sieve Series, the agglomerate readily dissolving upon exposure to water to disintegrate into particles of the particulate calcium source and primary plant nutrient source.
- 28. A method as set forth in claim 27 wherein the particulate calcium source has a particle size distribution such that at least about 90% by weight of the particulate calcium source is −325 mesh Tyler Standard Sieve Series.
- 29. A method as set forth in claim 27 wherein the agglomerate further comprises a micronutrient source, the micronutrient source comprising a source of at least one element selected from the group consisting of iron, copper, boron, selenium, chromium, vanadium, manganese, zinc and molybdenum.
- 30. A method as set forth in claim 29 wherein the magnesium content of the agglomerate is no greater than about 2.5% by weight.
- 31. A method as set forth in claim 30 wherein the magnesium content of the agglomerate is no greater than about 1.5% by weight.
