Claims
- 1. A sheet material having an array of lenses formed therein and a plurality of opaque mask elements in register with said lenses, said sheet material being produced by the process steps of:
- (a) embossing roll forming a first sheet having a front surface and a back surface from a transparent plastic material with said front surface having a surface contour including a multiplicity of adjacent curved convex elements less than 3 millimeter in width and said back surface having separated indented portions in register with said curved convex elements, intervening portions of said back surface between said indented portions being substantially smooth and flat surfaces,
- (b) applying a non-transparent liquid to said back surface, and
- (c) pressing the back surface of said first sheet firmly against a solid, generally smooth surface to substantially expel said liquid from said intervening portions and fill said indented portions with said liquid.
- 2. A sheet material formed by the process as recited in claim 1 wherein said convex elements are elongated cylindrical surfaces less than 2 millimeters in width and are parallel.
- 3. A sheet material formed by the process as recited in claim 2 wherein said first sheet has a greatest thickness dimension at least half the width of said cylindrical surfaces.
- 4. A sheet material formed by the process as recited in claim 1 further including the step of bonding said first sheet to a second sheet at said intervening portions of said back surface.
- 5. A sheet material formed by the process as recited in claim 4 wherein said second sheet is substantially coextensive with said first sheet.
- 6. A sheet material formed by the process as recited in claim 1 wherein said indented portions have a greatest depth from 0.1 times to 0.8 times the least thickness of said sheet.
- 7. A sheet material formed by the process as recited in claim 6 wherein said liquid is sufficiently opaque to prevent visible or longer wavelengths of light from being transmitted through said indented portions with a transmission factor of greater than 10 per cent.
