Claims
- 1. A process for producing solid, rigid, polyurethane articles having a density of at least 1 g/cc, a percent elongation of less than 100, and which can be demolded within a period of about 5 minutes without the addition of an external source of heat, which process comprises
- 1. admixing, in the absence of a catalytic quantity of a catalyst for urethane formation, the components of a composition comprising
- A. an amine initiated polyol having an OH equivalent weight of from about 50 to less than about 250;
- B. an organic aromatic polyisocyanate;
- C. a liquid modifier having a boiling point above about 150.degree. C selected from cyclic ethers and mixtures thereof; wherein components (A) and (B) are present in quantities such that the NCO:OH ratio is from about 0.8:1 to about 1.5:1 and component (C) is employed in quantities of from about 5% to about 60% by weight of the combined weights of components (A), (B), and (C);
- 2. placing the admixed composition into a suitable mold wherein said composition solidifies within less than about 5 minutes to a solid having a density of at least 1 g/cc and a percent elongation of less than 100; and
- 3. subsequently demolding the resultant article from the mold.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein components (A) and (B) are present in quantities such that the NCO:OH ratio is from about 0.90:1 to about 1.2:1 and component (C) is present in quantities of from about 15% to about 40% by weight of the combined weight of components (A), (B) and (C) and wherein component (A) has an OH equivalent weight of from about 50 to about 200.
- 3. The process of claim 2 wherein components (A) and (B) are present in quantities such that the NCO:OH ratio is from about 0.95:1 to about 1.05:1.
- 4. The process of claim 3 wherein component (C) is a cyclic polyether of ethylene oxide.
- 5. The process of claim 3 wherein component (C) is a cyclic tetramer of ethylene oxide.
- 6. The process of claim 3 wherein component (C) is a cyclic polyether of propylene oxide.
- 7. The process of claim 6 wherein component (C) is a cyclic pentamer of propylene oxide.
- 8. The process of claim 1 wherein said mold is that of a furniture component.
- 9. The process of claim 1 wherein said mold is that of a decorative object.
- 10. The process of claim 1 wherein said mold is that of a machine component.
- 11. The process of claim 3 wherein component (A) is selected from the group consisting of triethanolamine, an adduct of diethylenetriamine with propylene oxide and an adduct of aminoethylethanolamine with propylene oxide.
- 12. The process of claim 3 wherein component (B) is selected from the group consisting of 2,4-toluenediisocyanate, 2,6-toluenediisocyanate, diphenylmethanediisocyanate, and mixtures thereof.
- 13. The process of claim 1 wherein Component (A) additionally contains a non-amine initiated polyol having an equivalent weight of less than about 200 and wherein the weight ratio of non-amine initiated polyol to amine initiated polyol is less than about 2:1.
- 14. The process of claim 13 wherein the ratio of non-amine initiated polyol to amine initiated polyol is less than about 1:1.
