Claims
- 1. A solid solution catalyst consisting essentially of iron cations substituted for aluminum cations in a host lattice selected from the group consisting of .alpha.--Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, .beta.--Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, BaAl.sub.12 O.sub.19 and Ba.sub.0.50 Ce.sub.0.17 Ag.sub.0.33 Al.sub.12 O.sub.19, said catalyst prepared by employing a calcinating step at temperatures above about 1100.degree. C. and having an iron content of from about 0.5 percent to 70 percent by weight, expressed as the oxide, and having an X-ray diffraction pattern having peak positions different than that of the host lattice.
- 2. A solid solution catalyst of claim 1 wherein the iron content of the catalyst is from about 1 percent to about 15 percent by weight of the catalyst, expressed as the oxide.
- 3. The solid solution catalyst of claim 2 consisting essentially of iron cations substituted for aluminum cations in .alpha.--Al.sub.2 O.sub.3.
- 4. The solid solution catalyst of claim 2 consisting essentially of iron cations substituted for aluminum cations in a host lattice of .beta.--Al.sub.2 O.sub.3.
