Claims
- 1. A television channel tuning system comprising:
- switch means operable to produce a signal indicative of a desired television channel,
- an address generator responsive to said signal produced by said switch means for generating a unique binary address corresponding to the desired channel,
- memory means for storing a plurality of digital tuning words each representative of a different television channel and selectively outputting one of said tuning words upon reception of one of said unique binary addresses,
- converter means for receiving and converting said tuning words into analog tuning levels,
- manually controllable means operable to selectively change any of the digital tuning words stored in said memory means,
- means operable in connection with said switch means to produce sequential access tuning of said system by causing said address generator to produce progressively changing binary addresses, and
- skip means in said memory means for causing selective ones of the digital tuning words stored in said memory means to be skipped during sequential access tuning of said system.
- 2. The television tuning system of claim 1 and further comprising:
- means for automatically generating one of three band selection signals in response to said unique binary address.
- 3. The television tuning system of claim 1 wherein said switch means comprise an array of parallel access switches each corresponding to a predetermined television channel.
- 4. The television system of claim 1 wherein said means to produce sequential access tuning comprise up and down sequential access switches.
- 5. The television tuning system of claim 1 wherein said converter means comprises:
- up/down counter means,
- means for applying the selected tuning words output from said memory means to said up/down counter means,
- a synchronous binary counter,
- means for comparing the outputs of said up/down counter and said synchronous binary counter for generating a digital tuning signal having a duty cycle representative of a selected channel, and
- means for converting said digital tuning signal into an analog tuning level.
- 6. The tuning system of claim 1 wherein said skip means comprises:
- means for loading all logic zeros into said memory means at the location of said tuning words to be skipped.
- 7. A sequential and parallel access television channel tuning system comprising:
- a matrix array of channel selection switches each operable to provide parallel selection of a television channel,
- up and down channel selection switches operable to provide sequential selection of television channels,
- said up and down switches connected to terminals of said matrix array,
- means responsive to operation of said matrix array switches for generating unique parallel binary address signals corresponding to the selected television channel,
- means connected to said matrix array and responsive to operation of said up and down switches for generating sequential changes in said parallel binary address signals corresponding to sequential television channels,
- means responsive to said binary address signals for tuning a selected television channel, to remove
- means for generating a skip signal when designated ones of said binary address signals are generated, and
- means for applying said skip signal through said matrix array to cause the television channel to be skipped during sequential selection.
- 8. A television channel tuning system comprising:
- a programmable random access memory for storing predetermined digital tuning words,
- means for generating binary address words for addressing said memory,
- an up/down counter.
- means for applying the addressed tuning words from said memory to said up/down counter,
- a synchronous binary counter,
- means for comparing the outputs of said up/down counter and said synchronous binary counter for generating a digital tuning signal having a duty cycle representative of a desired television signal, and
- means for converting said digital tuning signal into an analog signal for performing television channel tuning.
- 9. The tuning system of claim 8 wherein said means for generating binary address words comprises:
- switch means for generating up and down search indications,
- means for generating clock signals,
- a counter responsive to said switch means for counting said clock signals and for generating said binary address signals.
- 10. The tuning system of claim 8 wherein said means for generating binary address words comprises:
- an array of switches each corresponding to a given television channel,
- means for encoding the output of said array of switches, and
- means responsive to said encoding means for generating said binary address signals.
- 11. A system for tuning a broadcast receiver comprising:
- an address generator for generating on a multiline output bus any one of a repertiore of multibit digital addresses each selectively associated with a broadcast channel desired to be tuned by said receiver,
- a plurality of switch means each operable to apply to said address generator an electrical indication to cause said generator to produce on said bus a unique one of said addresses associated with said switch means presently operated,
- a programmable tuning memory receiving said multibit digital address from said bus, said memory having at least one storage location uniquely designated by each multibit address received from said bus, each said storage location having stored therein and outputting when addressed a multibit digital tuning word and a digital band selection word,
- means receiving said digital tuning word output from said memory and converting said digital tuning word to an analog tuning level signal,
- means receiving said analog tuning level signal and said digital band selection word output from said memory and in response thereto adjusting said broadcast receiver for the reception of the broadcast channel selectably associated with said address presently appearing on said bus,
- means operable to electronically alter said digital words stored in any of said address locations in said tuning memory thereby to arbitrarily associate a selected broadcast channel with a given one of said storage locations and said address uniquely associated therewith, and
- a display means receiving said multibit digital address from said bus and visually indicating in response thereto the broadcast channel associated with said address.
- 12. The system as defined in claim 11 wherein said display means comprises an array of light emitting devices each of which is associated with a unique one of said plurality of switch means and a decoder responsive to the multibit address received from said multiline bus to activate the one of said light emitting devices associated with said switch means presently operated.
- 13. The system as defined in claim 11 wherein said display means comprises a multidigit numeric display and an additional programmable memory having at least one storage location uniquely associated with each different address of said repertoire of multibit addresses received from said bus, each storage location having stored therein and outputting to said numeric display when addressed multibit digital words activating selected digits of said digit display representative of the broadcast channel presently tuned by said receiver.
- 14. The system as defined in claim 11 wherein the means receiving said analog tuning level signal and said digital band selection words comprises a plurality of tuning diodes.
- 15. The system as defined in claim 11 further comprising serial access means operable during activation to generate on said multiline bus sequential ones of said repertoire of multibit digital addresses at a change rate sufficiently slow to allow an operator to deactivate said serial access means upon recognition by said operator of the tuning of said broadcast receiver to a desired broadcast channel.
- 16. The system as defined in claim 15 wherein said serial access means comprises at least one additional switch electrically connected through said plurality of switch means to cause said address generator to sequentially periodically generate a different multibit address on said multiline bus.
- 17. The system as defined in claim 15 wherein said serial access means is operable by remote control means.
- 18. The system as defined in claim 15 wherein said display means comprises an array of light emitting devices each of which is associated with a unique one of said plurality of switch means and the broadcast channel a decoder responsive to the multibit address received from said multiline bus to activate the one of said light emitting devices associated with said switch means associated with the broadcast channel presently tuned by said receiver.
- 19. The system as defined in claim 15 wherein said display means comprises a multidigit numeric display and an additional programmable memory having at least one storage location uniquely associated with each different address of said repertoire of multibit addresses received from said bus, each storage location having stored therein and outputting to said numeric display when addressed multibit digital words activating selected digits of said digit display representative of the broadcast channel presently tuned by said receiver.
- 20. The system as defined in claim 15 wherein the means receiving said analog tuning level signal and said digital band selection words comprises a plurality of tuning diodes.
- 21. The system as defined in claim 15 wherein said serial access means comprises at least one additional switch and a sequential address generator responsive to and during actuation of said at least one additional switch toremove from said multiline bus said addresses generated by said address generator and to output to said multiline bus sequential ones of said repertoire of multibit addresses.
- 22. The system as defined in claim 21 wherein said serial access means is operable by remote control means.
- 23. A system for tuning a broadcast receiver comprising:
- an address generator generating on a multiline output bus any one of a repertoire of multibit digital address words each selectably designative of a broadcast channel receivable by said broadcast receiver,
- serial access switch means operable during activation to cause said address generator to sequence through its repertoire of addresses and periodically generate a different multibit address on said multibit line,
- a display means receiving said multibit digital address from said bus and visually indicating in response thereto the broadcast channel presently designated by said address,
- a programmable tuning memory receiving said multibit digital address from said bus, said memory having at least one storage location uniquely designated by each different multibit address received from said bus, each storage location having stored therein and outputting when addressed a multibit digital tuning word and a digital band selection word,
- means receiving said digital tuning word output from said memory and converting said digital tuning word to an analog tuning level signal.
- means receiving said analog tuning signal and said digital band selection word output from said memory and in response thereto adjusting said broadcast receiver for reception of the broadcast channel selectably associated with said address, and
- means operable to electronically alter said digital words stored at any of said address locations in said tuning memory thereby to arbitrarily associate a selected broadcast channel with a given one of said addresses.
- 24. The system as defined in claim 23 wherein said display means comprises a multidigit numeric display and an additional programmable memory having at least one storage location uniquely associated with each address of said repertoire of addresses, each storage location having stored therein and outputting to said numeric display when addressed multibit digital words activating selected digits of said digit display to indicate the broadcast channel presently tuned by said broadcast receiver.
- 25. The system as defined in claim 23 wherein the means receiving said analog tuning level signal and said digital band selection words comprises a plurality of tuning diodes.
- 26. The system as defined in claim 23 wherein said display means comprises an array of light emitting devices each of which is associated with a unique one of said addresses and a decoder responsive to the multibit address received from said multiline bus to activate the one of said light emitting devices associated with said address, each of said light emitting devices having associated therewith means to display a selectable channel number during activation of said associated light emitting device.
- 27. The system as defined in claim 23 wherein said serial access means is operable by remote control means.
