Claims
- 1. A composition for a sunscreen for mammalian skin or hair or for providing a naturally-appearing tan to mammalian skin comprising an aqueous soluble melanin at a concentration of about 0.01 to 1.0 mg/ml, the soluble melanin having been produced by polymerizing a dihydroxyindolecarboxylic acid in an aqueous medium with aeration.
- 2. A method of providing a naturally-appearing tan to mammalian skin comprising topically applying to a mammal's skin an effective tan producing amount of an aqueous soluble melanin at a concentration of about 0.01 to 1.0 mg/ml, the soluble melanin having been produced by polymerizing a dihydroxyindolecarboxylic acid in an aqueous medium with aeration.
- 3. A method of providing a sun screen to mammalian skin and hair comprising topically applying to a mammal's skin or hair an effective sun screening amount of an aqueous soluble melanin at a concentration of about 0.01 to 1.0 mg/ml, either alone, or in admixture with a physiologically acceptable carrier in the form of an oil, cream or ointment, the soluble melanin having been produced by polymerizing a dihydroxyindolecarboxylic acid in an aqueous medium with aeration.
