Claims
- 1. A method for the separation of a gas from a fluid containing said gas, comprising the step of treating said fluid with a compound of formula I whereby said gas is absorbed by said compound, wherein said gas is oxygen, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, or an alkene, and wherein said formula I is
- Mn.sup.II LX.sub.2 I
- wherein L represents a ligand of the formula IA,
- PR.sup.1 R.sup.2 R.sup.3 IA
- wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2, and R.sup.3 independently represent alkyl, cycloalkyl, or aryl groups or hydrogen, with the proviso that no more than two of the groups R.sup.1, R.sup.2, and R.sup.3 are aryl groups and that at least one of the groups R.sup.1, R.sup.2, and R.sup.3 is an alkyl, cycloalkyl, or aryl group, and wherein X, which is a species capable of existing as an anion, represents --Cl, --Br, --I, --CN, --NO.sub.2, --NO.sub.3, --OH, --NCS, or --NCO.
- 2. A method according to claim 1, wherein X represents --Cl, --Br, --I, or --NCS.
- 3. A method according to claim 1, wherein none of the groups R.sup.1, R.sup.2, and R.sup.3 represents hydrogen.
- 4. The method of claim 1, wherein at least one of the groups R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 represents an aryl group comprising an electron donating substituent on an aromatic ring.
- 5. A method according to claim 1, wherein at least one of the groups R.sup.1, R.sup.2, and R.sup.3 represents a radical of the formula --CH.sub.2 R.sup.a, wherein R.sup.a represents hydrogen or an alkyl or cycloalkyl group.
- 6. A method according to claim 5, wherein R.sup.a represents a straight chain alkyl group comprising no more than ten carbon atoms.
- 7. The method of claim 5, wherein R.sup.a represents an alkyl group substituted by an aryl group.
- 8. The method of claim 7, wherein the aryl group comprises an electron donating substituent on an aromatic ring.
- 9. A method according to claim 1, wherein L represents PhPR.sub.2, CyPR.sub.2, Ph.sub.2 PR, Cy.sub.2 PR, PR.sub.3, MePR.sub.2, EtPR.sub.2, Pr.sup.n PR.sub.2, Bu.sup.n PR.sub.2, or PPh.sub.2 H, wherein Cy represents cyclohexyl and R represents methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, iso-propyl, n-butyl, iso-butyl, or n-pentyl.
- 10. A method according to claim 9, wherein L represents PMe.sub.3, PEt.sub.3, PPr.sup.n.sub.3, PPr.sup.i.sub.3, PBu.sup.n.sub.3, PBu.sup.i.sub.3, PEt.sub.2 Me, PEtMe.sub.2, PPhMe.sub.2, PPhEt.sub.2, PPh.sub.2 Me, PPh.sub.2 Et, or PPh.sub.2 H.
- 11. A method according to claim 10, wherein said compound has the formula MnPMe.sub.3 X.sub.2, MnPEt.sub.3 X.sub.2, MnPPr.sup.n.sub.3 X.sub.2, MnPPr.sup.i.sub.3 X.sub.2, MnPBu.sup.n.sub.3 X.sub.2, MnPMe.sub.2 PhX.sub.2, or MnPE.sub.t2 PhX.sub.2, wherein X represents Cl, Br, or I, or said compound has the formula MnPBu.sup.n.sub.3 (NCS).sub.2.
- 12. A method according to claim 1, wherein the gas which is sorbed is oxygen, hydrogen, an alkene or carbon monoxide.
- 13. A method according to claim 1, wherein the gas which is sorbed is sulphur dioxide.
- 14. A method according to claim 1, wherein the compound is irradiated with light whilst the gas is sorbed by the compound.
- 15. A method according to claim 14, wherein the gas is oxygen.
- 16. A method according to claim 1, wherein subsequent to sorption of the gas by the compound, the gas is recovered therefrom by reducing the pressure on the compound relative to the pressure at which the gas was sorbed by the compound.
