Claims
- 1. A method for sorting and finishing documents, comprising the steps of:
- distributing sheets discharged from an image forming apparatus among a plurality of bins that are vertically arranged upon another when said bins are in a sheet receiving position;
- raising said bins from the sheet receiving position after the completion of a sheet distributing operation to a finishing position that is above said sheet receiving position; and
- initiating a stapling operation upon a bunch of sheets which has been stored in each of said bins at said finishing position.
- 2. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of moving each of said bins in a substantially horizontal direction to the finishing position.
- 3. A sorter-finisher comprising:
- a plurality of bins vertically arranged upon another, said bins being movable upwardly from a sheet receiving position;
- a path through which sheets discharged from an image forming apparatus are conveyed to said bins when said bins are in the sheet receiving position;
- a finisher that acts upon a bunch of sheets which has been stored in each bin, said finisher being fixedly installed above the sheet receiving position of said bins; and
- drive means for raising said bins from the sheet receiving position after the completion of a sheet distributing operation so that each bin faces said finisher.
- 4. The sorter-finisher of claim 3, wherein said finisher includes a stapler.
- 5. A sorter-finisher, comprising:
- a plurality of bins vertically arranged one upon another, said bins being movable along a vertical path extending upward and downward from a specified area;
- distributing means for distributing sheets discharged from an image forming apparatus among said bins;
- means for shifting one of the bins in a substantially horizontal direction in the specified area while moving the other bins along the vertical path; and
- finishing means, which is fixedly installed at the specified area, for handling sheets in the bin in the specified area in order to staple the sheets.
- 6. A sorter-finisher comprising:
- a plurality of bins vertically arranged one upon another, said bins being vertically movable;
- distributing means for distributing sheets discharged from an image forming apparatus among said bins;
- finishing means for handling sheets which have been stored in each bin in order to staple the sheets;
- first drive means for vertically moving said bins; and
- second drive means for moving substantially horizontally each bin brought to substantially the same vertical position as said finishing means by said first drive means toward said finishing means.
- 7. The sorter-finisher as claimed in claim 6, wherein said finishing means includes take-out means for taking the sheets out of each bin and stapling means for stapling the sheets taken out of each bin by said take-out means.
- 8. The sorter-finisher as claimed in claim 7, wherein said take-out means includes a pair of rollers which presses up and down and nips the sheets in each bin.
- 9. The sorter-finisher as claimed in claim 6, wherein said first and second driving means include the following common elements:
- a side frame for supporting said bins so that each bin can move substantially horizontally;
- guide means for guiding said bins upward and downward and for guiding each bin brought to substantially the level as said finishing means to said finishing means; and
- a drive source for moving said side frame vertically.
- 10. A sorter-finisher comprising:
- a plurality of bins vertically arranged one upon another, said bins being movable along a vertical path extending upward and downward from a specified area;
- a path through which sheets discharged from an image forming apparatus are conveyed to said bins;
- a guide in which one of the bins in the specified area can be conveyed substantially horizontally while the other bins can be conveyed along the vertical path; and
- a finisher that acts upon sheets in the bin in the specified area in order to staple the sheets.
- 11. A sorter-finisher comprising:
- a plurality of bins vertically arranged one upon another, said bins being vertically movable;
- a path through which sheets discharged from an image forming apparatus are conveyed to said bins;
- a finisher that acts upon sheets which are stored in each bin in order to staple the sheets;
- a guide having a first guide portion in which said bins move vertically and a second guide portion in which each of said bins brought to substantially the same vertical position as said finisher by said first guide portion is moved substantially horizontally toward said finisher.
- 12. The sorter-finisher as claimed in claim 11, wherein said finisher includes take-out means for taking the sheets out of each bin and stapling means for stapling the sheets taken out of each bin by said take-out means.
- 13. The sorter-finisher as claimed in claim 12, wherein said take-out means includes a pair of rollers which presses up and down and nips the sheets in each bin.
- 14. The sorter-finisher as claimed in claim 11, wherein said guide includes the following common elements:
- a side frame for supporting said bins so that each bin can move substantially horizontally;
- means for guiding said bins upward and downward and for guiding each bin brought to substantially the same level as said finishing means to said finishing means; and
- a drive source for moving said side frame vertically.
