Claims
- 1. A process for manufacturing a composite radioactive source wire for irradiating tissue within the body of a patient, comprising the steps of:
- providing a thin, flexible, elongate wire having a predetermined diameter and a central hole extending to a predetermined depth of floor at the distal end of the wire;
- drawing down the wire to reduce the outer diameter thereof to a dimension suitable for access to the tissue to be irradiated and to increase the depth of the central hole;
- inserting a radioactive fiber having a sufficiently small diameter into the central hole and a sufficiently short length to preclude projection of an end of the fiber from the hole when the opposite end of the fiber abuts against the floor of the hole; and
- plugging the hole to seal the fiber securely within the distal end of the wire.
- 2. A process for manufacturing a composite radioactive source wire for irradiating tissue within the body of a patient, comprising the steps of:
- providing a thin, flexible, elongate wire having a predetermined diameter and a central hole extending to a predetermined depth of floor at the distal end of the wire;
- drawing down the wire to reduce the outer diameter thereof and increase the depth of the central hole;
- inserting a radioactive fiber having a sufficiently small diameter into the central hole and a sufficiently short length to preclude projection of an end of the fiber from the hole when the opposite end of the fiber abuts against the floor of the hole; and
- plugging the hole to seal the fiber securely within said distal end of the wire; further including the steps of:
- forming said elongate wire from a metal tube having an outer diameter sufficiently small to permit passage of the composite source wire through the narrowest segment of a conduit to be traversed by the wire for access to a site of the tissue to be irradiated, and from a backbone wire of smaller diameter than the inner diameter of the tube inserted into the tube to run from substantially the proximal end thereof to a point short of the distal end of the wire to leave the remainder of the tube open as the central hole, and wherein:
- said drawing down of the wire serves also to compress the tube onto the backbone wire to secure the backbone wire in the tube, and
- said plugging of the hole is performed by inserting a plug having a diameter at least approximately equal to the inner diameter of the tube into the tube from the distal end thereof to abut against the end of said fiber closest to the distal end of the tube and to substantially fill the remainder of the open hole, and closing the distal end of the tube about said plug to form a seal thereat and to secure said fiber in place within the tube.
- 3. The process of claim 2, further including:
- crimping said tube to aid in securing said fiber in place therein.
- 4. The process of claim 3, further including:
- gold plating the exterior surface of said metal tube from the distal end thereof to the furthermost portion of its length occupied by said fiber.
- 5. The process of claim 4, wherein:
- said tube is composed of stainless steel.
- 6. The process of claim 2, wherein:
- said fiber is composed of iridium, and further including:
- irradiating said fiber to an activity level of at least approximately one curie before insertion thereof into said tube.
- 7. The process of claim 6, wherein:
- said fiber has a length of one centimeter, and
- said drawing down of the tube reduces the diameter of the composite source wire to less than approximately 0.7 millimeter.
- 8. The process of claim 6, wherein:
- said fiber has a length of at least about two centimeters, and
- said drawing down of the tube reduces the diameter of the composite source wire to less than approximately 0.025 inch.
- 9. The process of claim 2, wherein:
- said fiber is composed of iridium, and further including:
- irradiating said fiber to an activity level in the range between about 200 millicuries and approximately one curie before insertion thereof into said tube.
- 10. The process of claim 9, wherein:
- said length of the fiber is selected according to the length of the tissue to be irradiated, and
- said drawing down of the tube is performed to reduce the diameter of the composite source wire to less than approximately 0.023 inch.
- 11. The process of claim 2, further including:
- flaring the distal end of said tube at least slightly to ease the insertion of the radioactive fiber therein, and to permit the insertion of said plug with a slightly larger outer diameter than the inner diameter of said tube.
- 12. The process of claim 11, further including:
- forming the distal end of said tube and the plug to provide a tapered tip for said composite source wire.
