Claims
- 1. A composition comprising an eatable having a burning taste and at least one tastand in an amount of about 0.0000001 to about 300% by weight, based on the weight of the eatable, in an amount sufficient to reduce said burning taste, said tastand being selected from the group of compounds having the structure: ##STR94## wherein at least one of the substituents R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4, R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 is selected from the group consisting of substituents capable of participating in a hydrogen bond and R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4, R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 are independently selected from the group consisting of: H, alkyl, substituted alkyl, alkoxy, substituted alkoxy, aryl, substituted aryl, alkylene, substituted alkylene, aminoacyl, substituted aminoacyl, aryloxy, substituted aryloxy, hydroxy, nitro, amino, substituted amino, cyano, halogen, aralkoxy, substituted aralkoxy, acyl, substituted acyl, arylacyl, substituted arylacyl, trifluoroacetyl, benzoyl, substituted benzoyl, alkylamino, substituted alkylamino, dialkylamino, substituted dialkylamino, trialkylamino, substituted trialkylamino, carbonates, substituted carbonates, alkylcarbonates, substituted alkylcarbonates, arylcarbonates, substituted arylcarbonates, acylamino, substituted acylamino, guanidino, substituted guanidino, alkylguanidino, substituted alkylguanidino, acylguanidino, substituted acylguanidino, arylguanidino, substituted arylguanidino, alkyurethanes, substituted alkyurethanes, arylurethanes, substituted arylurethanes, ureas, substituted ureas, mono- or di- or tri- substituted ureas, alkylureas, substituted alkylureas, an O, S or N glycoside, or a phosphorylated glycoside where the glycoside is a monosaccharide, a disaccharide, a trisaccharide, an oligosaccharide, a substituted mono-, di-, tri-, or oligosaccharide, CHO, substituted CHO, COCH.sub.3, substituted COCH.sub.3, CH.sub.2 CHO, substituted CH.sub.2 CHO, COOH, CH.sub.2 COOH, substituted CH.sub.2 COOH, COOCH.sub.3, substituted COOCH.sub.3, OCOCH.sub.3, substituted OCOCH.sub.3, CONH.sub.2, substituted CONH.sub.2, NHCHO, substituted NHCHO, SCH.sub.3, substituted SCH.sub.3, SCH.sub.2 CH.sub.3, substituted SCH.sub.2 CH.sub.3, CH.sub.2 SCH.sub.3, substituted CH.sub.2 SCH.sub.3, SO.sub.3 H, SO.sub.2 NH.sub.2, substituted SO.sub.2 NH.sub.2, SO.sub.2 CH.sub.3, substituted SO.sub.2 CH.sub.3, CH.sub.2 SO.sub.3 H, substituted CH.sub.2 SO.sub.3 H, cycloalkyl, substituted cycloalkyl, heterocyclic, substituted heterocyclic, polycyclic, substituted polycyclic, and CH.sub.2 SO.sub.2 NH.sub.2, arylureas, substituted arylureas, multiple substituted arylureas, an acid group of the structure ZO.sub.q H.sub.r wherein Z is an element selected from the group consisting of carbon, sulfur, boron or phosphorus, q is an integer from 2 to 3 and r is an integer from 1 to 3; carboxylic acid ester, substituted carboxylic acid ester, carboxamide, substituted carboxamide, N-alkyl carboxamide, substituted N-alkyl carboxamide, di-alkyl carboxamides, substituted di-alkyl carboxamides, and/or two substituents together represent an aliphatic chain linked to a phenyl ring at two positions, either directly or via a an oxygen, nitrogen or sulfur group, any H on N, S, or O, may be substituted with one of the following substituents: alkyl, substituted alkyl, dialkyl, substituted dialkyl, aralkyl, substituted aralkyl, aryl, substituted aryl, diaryl, substituted diaryl, acyl, substituted acyl, cycloalkyl, substituted cycloalkyl, benzoyl, substituted benzoyl, trifluoroacetyl, alkyloxycarbonyl, substituted alkyloxycarbonyl, aryloxycarbonyl, substituted aryloxycarbonyl, alkylaminocarbonyl, substituted alkylaminocarbonyl, arylaminocarbonyl, substituted arylaminocarbonyl, amidines, substituted amidines, alkylamidines, substituted alkylamidines, arylamidines, substituted arylamidines, a monosaccharide, substituted a monosaccharide, a disaccharide, substituted disaccharide, a trisaccharide, substituted trisaccharide, an oligosaccharide, substituted oligosaccharide, phosphorylated saccharides, substituted phosphorylated saccharides, arylacyl, substituted arylacyl, alkylene, substituted alkylene, heterocyclic, substituted heterocyclic, polycyclic, substituted polycyclic, cyano, nitro, any H on N, S, or O, may be substituted with one of the above substituents, in any combination,

- 2. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the tastand is selected from the group consisting of:

- 3. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the eatable is or contains ibuprofen.
- 4. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the eatable is or contains ibuprofen and the tastand is 2,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid, and/or physiologically acceptable salts thereof.
- 5. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the eatable is or contains glycerol.
- 6. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the eatable is or contains glycerol and the tastand is 2,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid, and/or physiologically acceptable salts thereof.
- 7. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the eatable is or contains ethanol.
- 8. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the eatable is or contains ethanol and the tastand is 2,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid, and/or physiologically acceptable salts thereof.
- 9. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the eatable is or contains peppers or pepper extract.
- 10. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the eatable is or contains peppers or pepper extract and the tastand is 2,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid, and/or physiologically acceptable salts thereof.
- 11. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the eatable is or contains capsaicin or capsaicin analogues.
- 12. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the eatable is or contains capsaicin or capsaicin analogues and the tastand is 2,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid, and/or physiologically acceptable salts thereof.
- 13. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the tastand is present in an amount of 1 to 50% relative to the eatable having a burning taste.
- 14. A composition comprising ibuprofen, having a burning taste, and 2,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid in an amount sufficient to reduce said burning taste.
- 15. A composition comprising ethanol, having a burning taste, and 2,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid in an amount sufficient to reduce said burning taste.
- 16. A composition comprising peppers or pepper extract, having a burning taste, and 2,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid in an amount sufficient to reduce said burning taste.
- 17. A composition comprising capsaicin or capsaicin analogues, having a burning taste, and 2,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid in an amount sufficient to reduce said burning taste.
- 18. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the tastand is 4-ethoxyphenylurea, and physiologically acceptable salts thereof.
- 19. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the tastand is 3-nitro-4-n-propoxy-aniline, and physiologically acceptable salts thereof.
- 20. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the tastand is 3-nitro-4-methyl-aniline, and physiologically acceptable salts thereof.
- 21. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the tastand is 2-methyl-3-nitroaniline, and physiologically acceptable salts thereof.
- 22. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the tastand is 2-hydroxy-4-aminobenzoic acid, and physiologically acceptable salts thereof.
- 23. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the tastand is 3-hydroxy-4-aminobenzoic acid, and physiologically acceptable salts thereof.
- 24. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the tastand is 2,4,6-trihydroxybenzoic acid, and physiologically acceptable salts thereof.
- 25. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the tastand is 2,6-dihydroxybenzoic acid, and physiologically acceptable salts thereof.
- 26. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the tastand is 2-amino tere-phthalic acid, and physiologically acceptable salts thereof.
- 27. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the tastand is (-)-2-(4-methoxyphenoxy)propionic acid, and physiologically acceptable salts thereof.
- 28. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the tastand is (+)-2-(4-methoxyphenoxy)propionic acid, and physiologically acceptable salts thereof.
- 29. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the tastand is phenoxyacetic acid, and physiologically acceptable salts thereof.
- 30. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the tastand is 2-hydroxyphenylacetic acid, and physiologically acceptable salts thereof.
- 31. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the tastand is 3-methoxyphenyl acetic acid, and physiologically acceptable salts thereof.
- 32. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the tastand is 3-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid, and physiologically acceptable salts thereof.

- 42. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the eatable comprises a pharmaceutical formulation.
- 43. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the eatable is a beverage.
- 44. - 48. A method according to claim 44 wherein the eatable or contains glycerol.
- 49. A method according to claim 41 wherein the eatable is or contains glycerol and the tastand is 2,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid, and/or physiologically acceptable salts thereof.
- 50. A method according to claim 44 wherein the eatable or contains ethanol.
- 51. A method according to claim 44 wherein the eatable is or contains ethanol and the tastand is 2,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid, and/or physiologically acceptable salts thereof.
- 52. A method according to claim 44 wherein the eatable or contains peppers or pepper extract.
- 53. A method according to claim 44 wherein the eatable is or contains peppers or pepper extract and the tastand is 2,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid, and/or physiologically acceptable salts thereof.
- 54. A method according to claim 44 wherein the eatable or contains capsaicin or capsaicin analogues.
- 55. A method according to claim 44 wherein the eatable is or contains capsaicin or capsaicin analogues and the tastand is 2,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid, and/or physiologically acceptable salts thereof.
- 56. A method according to claim 41 wherein the tastand is present in an amount of 1 to 50% relative to the eatable having a burning taste.
- 57. A method of making a composition according to claim 14, which method comprises incorporating in or ingesting along with ibuprofen, 2,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid in an amount sufficient to reduce said burning taste.
- 58. A method of making a composition according to claim 15, which method comprises incorporating in or ingesting along with ethanol, 2,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid in an amount sufficient to reduce said burning taste.
- 59. A method of making a composition according to claim 16, which method comprises incorporating in or ingesting along with peppers or pepper extract, 2,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid in an amount sufficient to reduce said burning taste.
- 60. A method of making a composition according to claim 17, which method comprises incorporating in or ingesting along with capsaicin or capsaicin analogues, 2,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid in an amount sufficient to reduce said burning taste.
