Claims
- 1. A road surface especially adapted to enhance night driving safety comprising:
- a surface layer sufficiently flat for moving a wheeled vehicle thereon; and
- a plurality of beads partially embedded in said surface layer, said beads comprising a glass and an oxide dopant of at least one of the lanthanide series of elements at an effective concentration to activate substantial fluorescence in the glass when exposed to ultraviolet light.
- 2. A road surface according to claim 1, wherein said beads are substantially retroreflective at optical wavelengths.
- 3. A road surface according to claim 2, further having at least one road marking, comprising a layer of resin over said road surface, wherein said beads are embedded in the layer of resin.
- 4. A road surface according to claim 2, wherein said beads are embedded about fifty percent to about sixty percent.
- 5. A road surface according to claim 2, wherein said beads are substantially free of tint under illumination with optical wavelengths.
- 6. A road surface according to claim 2, wherein the lanthanide element of said lanthanide oxide dopant is in a trivalent state.
- 7. A road surface according to claim 6, wherein said lanthanide oxide dopant comprises at least one of the set of La.sub.2 O.sub.3, Ce.sub.2 O.sub.3, Eu.sub.2 O.sub.3, Gd.sub.2 O.sub.3, or Tb.sub.2 O.sub.3.
- 8. A road surface according to claim 7, wherein said bead has a refractive index relative to air greater than 1.6.
- 9. A road surface according to claim 7, wherein said beads comprise approximately 30% to approximately 80% of one of the set of SiO.sub.2 and B.sub.2 O.sub.3 ; approximately 1% to approximately 35% of one of the set of La.sub.2 O.sub.3 and Gd.sub.2 O.sub.3 ; approximately 5% to approximately 45% Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 ; and about 0.5% to about 30% of one of the set of Tb.sub.2 O.sub.3 and Ce.sub.2 O.sub.3, where percentages are percentages-by-weight.
- 10. A road surface according to claim 2, wherein said beads comprise about 76% SiO.sub.2 ; about 2% Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 ; about 15% B.sub.2 O.sub.3 ; about 6% Na.sub.2 O; about 0.20% to about 0.95% Eu.sub.2 O.sub.3 ; and about 0.01% to about 0.05% CeO.sub.2, where percentages are percentages-by-weight.
