Claims
- 1. An anti-skid control apparatus for a vehicle braking system having front wheels, rear wheels, and a brake system for optionally exerting braking force on the wheels wherein brake fluid is employed to transmit the braking force, the anti-skid control apparatus comprising:
- (a) wheel speed sensors for measuring speed of the wheels respectively;
- (b) a modulator for selecting a mode for each of the wheels, the mode being selected out of an increase pressure mode, and at least one of a decrease pressure mode and a hold mode; the increase pressure mode is for increasing brake fluid pressure, the decrease pressure mode is for decreasing the brake fluid pressure, and the hold mode is for maintaining the pressure;
- (c) a controller for judging, with reference to threshold values, whether or not a wheel is about to lock based on wheel speeds; and when a wheel is about to lock, activating antiskid control for the wheel which is about to lock by controlling the selection of modes at the modulator so that one of the hold mode and the pressure decrease mode is selected for the wheel which is about to lock; the controller having:
- a pressure suppression means for stepwisely increasing in pressure increments the brake fluid pressure of a first front wheel which is not under the antiskid control in condition that a second front wheel is under antiskid control,
- a split .mu. detection means for counting the number of said pressure increments, and judging that split .mu. state occurs when the number of increments exceeds a prescribed value, the split .mu. state being defined as a condition when the difference between the friction coefficients of the surface beneath the right and left wheels exceeds a predetermined value, and
- a threshold value changing means for decreasing a threshold value corresponding to the first front wheel, during the antiskid control of the second front wheel and in the split .mu. state, so as to facilitate an activation of either one of the pressure decrease mode and the hold mode for the first front wheel.
- 2. An antiskid control apparatus in accordance with claim 1, wherein the controller further comprises:
- a preliminary judgement means for counting a duration of the decrease pressure mode for the second front wheel, and judging whether the duration exceeds a predetermined time;
- the pressure suppression means decreases the brake fluid pressure of the first front wheel even when the duration of the decreasing pressure mode exceeds the predetermined time if the brake fluid pressure of the second front wheel is still being decreased, and stepwisely increases in pressure increments the brake fluid pressure of the first front wheel when the second front wheel is not decreased,
- the split .mu. detecting means further measures the duration of the pressure decrease performed by means of the pressure suppression means, adds the duration of the pressure decrease to the number of pressure increments, and determines that the split .mu. condition exists when the total of the number and the duration decrease exceed the predetermined value.
- 3. An antiskid control apparatus in accordance with claim 1, wherein the threshold value changing means decreases the threshold value for judging whether to enter into the decrease pressure mode.
- 4. An antiskid control apparatus in accordance with claim 3, wherein the threshold value changing means maintains, during the antiskid control, the decreased threshold value at the start of antiskid control.
- 5. An antiskid control in accordance with claim 3, wherein decrement of the threshold value when the antiskid control is initiated is different from the decrements of the threshold value after the initiation of the antiskid control.
- 6. An antiskid control apparatus in accordance with claim 1, wherein the threshold value changing means decreases the threshold value for judging whether to enter into the hold mode.
- 7. An antiskid control apparatus in accordance with claim 6, wherein the threshold value changing means maintains, during the antiskid control, the decreased threshold value at the start of antiskid control.
- 8. An antiskid control in accordance with claim 6, wherein decrement of the threshold value when the antiskid control is initiated is different from the decrements of the threshold value after the initiation of the antiskid control.
- 9. An anti-skid control apparatus for a vehicle braking system having front wheels, rear wheels, and a brake system for optionally exerting braking force on the wheels wherein brake fluid is employed to transmit the braking force, the anti-skid control apparatus comprising:
- (a) wheel speed sensors for measuring speed of the wheels, respectively;
- (b) a modulator for selecting a mode for each of the wheels, the mode being selected out of an increase pressure mode, and at least one of a decrease pressure mode and a hold mode; the increase pressure mode is for increasing brake fluid pressure, the decrease pressure mode is for decreasing the brake fluid pressure, and the hold mode is for maintaining the pressure;
- (c) a controller for judging, with reference to threshold values, whether or not a wheel is about to lock based on wheel speeds; and when a wheel is about to lock, activating antiskid control for the wheel which is about to lock by controlling the selection of modes at the modulator so that one of the hold mode and the pressure decrease mode is selected for the wheel which is about to lock, the controller having:
- a pressure suppression means for stepwisely increasing in pressure increments the brake fluid pressure of a first front wheel which is not under the antiskid control in condition that a second front wheel is under antiskid control,
- a split .mu. detection means for counting the number of said pressure increments, and judging that a split .mu. state occurs when the number of increments exceeds a prescribed value, the split .mu. state being defined as a condition when the difference between the friction coefficients of the surface beneath the right and left wheels exceeds a predetermined value, and
- a braking force control means for maintaining a minimal difference in braking force between the right and left front wheels during the antiskid control of the front wheel and in the split .mu. state wherein the braking force control means decreases the brake fluid pressure of a front wheel which is not under antiskid control, in synchronism to the decrease of the brake fluid pressure of the front wheel under antiskid control.
- 10. An antiskid control apparatus in accordance with claim 9, wherein:
- the controller further comprises a preliminary judgement means for counting a duration of decreasing pressure mode for the second front wheel, and judging whether the duration exceeds a predetermined time, and
- the pressure suppression means decreases the brake fluid pressure of the first front wheel even when the duration of the decrease pressure mode exceeds the predetermined time if the brake fluid pressure of the second front wheel is still being decreased, and stepwisely increases in pressure increments the brake fluid pressure of the first front wheel when the second front wheel is not decreased,
- the split .mu. detecting means further measures the duration of the pressure decrease performed by means of the pressure suppression means, adds the duration of the pressure decrease to the number of pressure increments, and determines that the split .mu. condition exists when the total of the number and the duration decrease exceed the predetermined value.
- 11. An anti-skid control apparatus for a vehicle braking system having front wheels, rear wheels, and a brake system for optionally exerting braking force on the wheels wherein brake fluid is employed to transmit the braking force, the anti-skid control apparatus comprising:
- (a) wheel speed sensors for measuring speed of the wheels, respectively;
- (b) a modulator for selecting a mode for each of the wheels, the mode being selected out of an increase pressure mode, and at least one of a decrease pressure mode and a hold mode; the increase pressure mode is for increasing brake fluid pressure, the decrease pressure mode is for decreasing the brake fluid pressure, and the hold mode is for maintaining the pressure;
- (c) a controller for judging, with reference to threshold values, whether or not a wheel is about to lock based on wheel speeds; and when a wheel is about to lock, activating antiskid control for the wheel which is about to lock by controlling the selection of modes at the modulator so that one of the hold mode and the pressure decrease mode is selected for the wheel which is about to lock, the controller having:
- a pressure suppression means for stepwisely increasing in pressure increments the brake fluid pressure of a first front wheel which is not under the antiskid control in condition that a second front wheel is under antiskid control,
- a split .mu. detection means for counting the number of said pressure increments, and judging that a split .mu. state occurs when the number of increments exceeds a prescribed value, the split .mu. state being defined as a condition when the difference between the friction coefficients of the surface beneath the right and left wheels exceeds a predetermined value, and
- a braking force control means for maintaining a minimal difference in braking force between the right and left front wheels during the antiskid control of the front wheel and in the split .mu. state wherein the braking force control means decreases regardless of the braking condition, the brake fluid pressure of the front wheel which is not under antiskid control during the antiskid control of the second front wheel and in the split .mu. state.
