Claims
- 1. In a method for installing a plastic refractory composition by gunning said composition onto a substrate, the improvement which comprises employing said composition in the form of a friable granular mass having a workability index of from about 85 to about 30% as measured by ASTM C-181-47 and containing from about 0.05% to about 0.2% by weight of a hydrocolloid selected from the group consisting of xanthan gum and an ether of a polysaccharide.
- 2. A method for gunning a refractory composition onto a substrate, said method comprising adding from about 0.05% to about 0.2% by weight of a hydrocolloid selected from the class consisting of xanthan gum and an ether of a polysaccharide to the composition, adjusting the moisture content of the composition to obtain a workability index of from about 85 to about 30% as measured by ASTM C-181-47, forming the resulting moist composition into a friable granular mass, introducing said mass into the hopper of a refractory gunning apparatus, and gunning the granular mass onto the substrate.
- 3. The method of claim 2 wherein the moisture content is adjusted to be from about 4% to about 10% by weight.
- 4. The method of claim 2 wherein the ether is methylcellulose.
- 5. A method for installing a plastic refractory composition on a substrate, said method consisting essentially of adding from about 0.05% to about 0.2% by weight of a hydrocolloid selected from the class consisting of xanthan gum and an ether of a polysaccharide to the composition, adjusting the moisture content of the composition to obtain a workability index from about 8% to about 30% as measured by ASTM C-181-47, forming the composition into a friable granular mass, introducing said mass into the hopper of a refractory gunning apparatus, and gunning the granular mass onto the substrate.
- 6. The method of claim 2 or 5 wherein the hydrocolloid is xanthan gum.
