Claims
- 1. A broadcast system comprising a subsystem and at least one subscriber station; said subsystem comprising a Subsystem spread spectrum encoder, said subsystem spread spectrum encoder having an encoder input comprising information to be broadcast to said at least one subscriber station and having an output comprising an encoder output signal including a representation of said information to be broadcast in a spread spectrum format;
- said subsystem further comprising a subsystem transmitter, said subsystem transmitter coupled to said spread spectrum encoder and having a subsystem transmitter input comprising said encoder output signal, said subsystem transmitter having an output comprising a spread spectrum signal spread over the entirety of a frequency range; and,
- said subscriber station comprising a subscriber station spread spectrum receiver and a subscriber station narrowband transceiver capable of transmitting narrowband signals and receiving narrowband signals, said narrowband signals having frequency ranges falling within said frequency range, said subscriber station narrowband transceiver capable of transmitting and receiving said narrowband signals and said subscriber station spread spectrum receiver capable of receiving said spread spectrum signal contemporaneously.
- 2. A system as in claim 1, wherein said subscriber station narrowband transceiver comprises circuitry for cellular technology reception and transmission and wherein said subscriber station spread spectrum receiver comprises circuitry for satellite technology reception.
- 3. A system as in claim 1, wherein said subsystem further comprises information formatting circuitry, including a data buffer, which has an information formatting circuitry output comprising formatted information, said formatted information comprising an input to said spread spectrum encoder.
- 4. A system as in claim 1, wherein said subsystem further comprises message packing circuitry, said message packing circuitry having an output comprising packetized data, said packetized data comprising an input to said spread spectrum encoder.
- 5. A system as in claim 1, wherein said subsystem further comprises compression circuitry, said compression circuitry having an output comprising an encoded signal, said encoded signal comprising an input to said spread spectrum encoder.
- 6. A system as in claim 1, wherein said subsystem further comprises an error correction circuit, said error correction circuitry having an output comprising said information to be broadcast encoded for error detection and correction, said error detection and correction encoded information comprising an input to said spread spectrum encoder.
- 7. A system as in claim 1, wherein said information to be broadcast comprises signals from the group comprising control signals, data, graphics, digitized voice, digitized images and moving video, and mixed media comprising any combination of control signals, data, graphics, digitized voice, digitized images or moving video.
- 8. A system as in claim 1, wherein said spread spectrum signal is transmitted by said subsystem transmitter using time division multiple access (TDMA) and wherein said subscriber station spread spectrum receiver further comprises circuitry for decoding a TDMA transmitted spread spectrum signal.
- 9. The system of claim 1, wherein said encoder output signal comprises a plurality of spread spectrum code sequences, each one of said spread spectrum code sequences corresponding to a unique sequence of data bits of said information to be broadcast.
- 10. A system as in claim 1, wherein said subscriber station narrowband transceiver transmits information comprising a request for said subsystem transmitter output to be broadcast to said subscriber station.
- 11. A system as in claim 1, wherein said encoder input comprises a plurality of subsets of information and said subscriber station narrowband transceiver transmits information comprising a request for one or more of said subsets of information to be broadcast to said subscriber station.
- 12. A broadcast system comprising a subsystem and at least one subscriber station; said subsystem comprising a subsystem transmitter having a subsystem transmitter input comprising information to be broadcast to said at least one subscriber station, said subsystem transmitter having an output comprising a signal in a narrowband frequency channel;
- said subscriber station comprising a subscriber station narrowband receiver and a subscriber station spread spectrum transceiver capable of transmitting spread spectrum signals and receiving spread spectrum signals, said spread spectrum signals spread over the entirety of a frequency range, said frequency range encompassing said narrowband frequency channel, said subscriber station spread spectrum transceiver capable of transmitting and receiving said spread spectrum signals and said subscriber station narrowband receiver capable of receiving said narrowband signal contemporaneously.
- 13. A system as in claim 12, wherein said subscriber station spread spectrum transceiver comprises circuitry for cellular technology reception and transmission and wherein said subscriber station narrowband receiver comprises circuitry for satellite technology reception.
- 14. A system as in claim 12, wherein said subsystem further comprises information formatting circuitry, including a data buffer, which has an information formatting circuitry output comprising formatted information, said formatted information comprising an input to said subsystem transmitter.
- 15. A system as in claim 12, wherein said information to be broadcast comprises signals from the group comprising control signals, data, graphics, digitized voice, digitized images and moving video, and mixed media comprising any combination of control signals, data, graphics, digitized voice, digitized images or moving video.
- 16. A system as in claim 12, wherein said spread spectrum signals are transmitted by said subscriber station spread spectrum transceiver using time division multiple access (TDMA).
- 17. The system of claim 12, wherein each of said spread spectrum signals comprises a plurality of spread spectrum code sequences.
- 18. The system of claim 12, wherein said subscriber station spread spectrum transceiver transmits information comprising a request for said subsystem transmitter output to be broadcast to said subscriber station.
- 19. A method for broadcasting, comprising the steps of receiving information to be broadcast; generating a first signal including a representation of said information to be broadcast in a spread spectrum format; transmitting said first, spread spectrum signal over the entirety of a frequency range; and receiving said first, spread spectrum signal contemporaneously with receiving a second, narrowband signal and transmitting a third, narrowband signal, said second, narrowband signal and said third, narrowband signal each transmitted in a channel of said frequency range.
- 20. The method of claim 19, wherein said spread spectrum signal comprises a plurality of spread spectrum code sequences, each one of said spread spectrum code sequences corresponding to a unique sequence of data bits of said information to be broadcast.
