Claims
- 1. In a squeeze film shaft damper having a bearing housing with an annular chamber therein and an annular bearing support member fitted in said chamber for limited radial motion and defining a thin annular squeeze film space between opposing circumferential planar surfaces of said bearing support member and said annular chamber, an improvement therefore comprising
- (a) a part of said housing overlying and spaced from said bearing support member on one side thereof to define an annular recess therewith, and
- (b) an annular conical spring ring seal positioned compressingly in said recess to circumferentially seal said squeeze film space, and
- (c) wherein said bearing support member is an annular outer race of a rolling element bearing with an outer circumferential planar surface, and
- (1) said annular race having a necked down section at each side end thereof with a projecting lip,
- (2) said projecting lip on one side of said race engaging said spring ring seal at an inner rib and defining therewith an inlet seal plenum chamber in circumferential fluid flow relationship with said squeeze film space,
- (3) said projecting lip and necked down section on the opposite side of said race engaging said housing to define therewith an exit plenum chamber in circumferential fluid flow relationship with said squeeze film space,
- (4) an oil exit passage in said housing connecting to said exit plenum for a flow of oil out of said damper, and
- (5) said housing having an oil flow passage therein connected to said inlet seal plenum to supply oil to said damper.
- 2. The invention as recited in claim 1 wherein said annular bearing support member is an outer race of a rolling element bearing with an outer circumferential planar surface and annular planar end surfaces and
- (a) said race having a pair of concentric spaced apart plenum grooves in said outer planar surface and spaced inwardly from the ends of said race with the said squeeze film space therebetween,
- (b) and an oil system for said damper comprising
- (1) an oil inlet conduit in said housing, said inlet conduit being connected directly to one of said plenums adjacent said seal,
- (2) an oil exit means in said housing, said oil exit means in open fluid flow communication with the other of said plenums for oil flow out of said damper.
- 3. The invention as recited in claim 2 wherein said race includes a further annular axial groove plenum in one of said annular planar end surfaces and adjacent the said other of said grooves, said race having an oil flow passage interconnecting said other of said plenums and said annular axial groove in open fluid flow communication.
- 4. The invention as recited in claim 3 wherein said oil exit means comprises an oil passage connected to said axial plenum groove for exit oil flow from said damper.
- 5. The invention as recited in claim 2 wherein said race includes a further annular axial groove in one of said annular planar end surfaces and seal means in said axial groove adapted to bear against an opposing wall of said annular chamber.
- 6. The invention as recited in claim 5 wherein said seal means is biased against a housing wall by means of said spring ring seal.
- 7. The invention as recited in claim 6 wherein said seal means is a solid material seal in sliding contact with an opposing housing wall.
