Claims
- 1. A composition for reducing SO.sub.x by in-furnace injection of a calcium-based sorbent, in the form of an aqueous slurry comprising:
- a calcium-containing material which is capable of reacting with sulfur oxides at temperatures above 400.degree. F. to form calcium sulfites and sulfates, and
- a stabilizer system comprising a hydrophobic surfactant having an HLB of below 8 and a hydrophilic surfactant having an HLB of above 8, wherein the HLB values of the hydrophobic and the hydrophilic surfactants differ by at least about 3.
- 2. A composition according to claim 1 wherein, the difference in HLB values for the two different surfactants is at least about 5.
- 3. A composition according to claim 1 wherein, the ratio of the weight of the hydrophobic surfactants to the weight of the hydrophilic surfactants within the range of from about 25:1 to about 1:1.
- 4. A composition according to claim 3 wherein, the ratio of the weight of the hydrophobic surfactants to the weight of the hydrophilic surfactants is within the range of from about 12:1 to about 2:1.
- 5. A composition according to claim 1 wherein, the stabilizer system is employed at a concentration of from about 1 to about 20,000 parts per million w/v (ppm).
- 6. A composition according to claim 5 wherein, the stabilizer system is employed at a concentration of from about 250 to about 1,000 ppm.
- 7. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the slurry contains from about 5 to about 50% active calcium-containing material based on the weight of the slurry.
- 8. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the individual particles of calcium-containing material in the slurry are within the size range of from about 0.05 to about 50 .mu.m.
- 9. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the calcium containing material comprises calcium hydroxide having an average primary particle size of from about 0.05 to about 5.0 .mu.m, with fewer than about 2% agglomerates having diameters greater than about 1 .mu.m.
- 10. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the calcium containing material comprises calcium oxide having an average primary particle size of from about 0.5 to about 25 .mu.m, with fewer than 5% agglomerates having diameters greater than about 10 .mu.m.
