Claims
- 1. A polymer stabilizing composition comprising (i) an organic solvent, and (ii) mixture of triaryl triazine compounds each represented by the formula below: ##STR8## wherein independently for each of said compounds X, Y, and Z are each the same or different aromatic carbocyclic radicals, and at least one of X, Y, and Z is substituted by a hydroxy group ortho to the point of attachment to the triazine ring, and
- at least one of R.sup.1 to R.sup.9 is an alkoxy radical of the formula -O-(C.sub.6 to C.sub.12 alkyl) substituted at a point para to the point of attachment to the triazine ring, and the remainder of R.sup.1 to R.sup.9 are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, hydroxy, alkyl, alkoxy, sulfonic, carboxy, halo, haloalkyl, and acylamino;
- with the proviso that in said mixture are present at least 10% each of at least three different isomers of said -O-(C.sub.6 to C.sub.12 alkyl) radical, wherein % is based on the total -O-(C.sub.6 to C.sub.12 alkyl) radicals.
- 2. The polymer stabilizing composition of claim 1 wherein said triaryl triazine ingredient is at a concentration of at least 40 weight percent based on the total weight of the stabilizing composition.
- 3. The polymer stabilizing composition of claim 2 wherein said triaryl triazine ingredient is from 50 to 80 weight percent of the stabilizing composition.
- 4. The polymer stabilizing composition of claim 1 containing a HALS.
- 5. The polymer stabilizing composition of claim 4 wherein the HALS is a 2,2,6,6-tetraalkylpiperidine hindered amine type light stabilizer including N-oxides, N-hydroxides, N-alkoxides, acid addition salts, and complexes with metal compounds thereof.
- 6. The polymer stabilizing composition of claim 1 wherein the organic solvent is selected from the group consisting of alkanes, halogenated alkanes, aromatic hydrocarbons, halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, aldehydes, esters, ethers, ketones, and mixtures thereof.
- 7. The composition of claim 6 wherein the organic solvent is xylene, butyl acetate, and mixtures thereof.
- 8. The polymer stabilizing composition of claim 1 wherein for each said triaryl triazine compound:
- (a) X, Y, and Z are each phenyl groups,
- (b) only one of X, Y, and Z is substituted by a hydroxy group ortho to the point of attachment to the triazine ring,
- (c) at least one -O-(C.sub.6 to C.sub.12 alkyl) radical is substituted, on the same phenyl group as said hydroxy group, at a point para to the point of attachment of the phenyl group to the triazine ring, and
- (d) the remainder of the R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4, R.sup.5, R.sup.6, R.sup.7, R.sup.8, and R.sup.9 are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and alkyl groups.
- 9. The polymer stabilizing composition of claim 1 wherein said at least three different -O-(C.sub.6 to C.sub.12 alkyl) radicals are formed from a mixture of isomeric C.sub.6 to C.sub.12 alkyl halides containing at least 10% each of at least three different isomers.
- 10. The polymer stabilizing composition of claim 9 wherein said at least three different-O-(C.sub.6 to C.sub.12 alkyl radicals are formed from a mixed isomeric alkyl halide derived from "Oxo" process alcohols.
- 11. The polymer stabilizing composition of claim 9 wherein the alkyl group of said alkyl halide is predominantly an isomeric mixture of an alkyl group having the same number of carbon atoms.
- 12. The polymer stabilizing composition of claim 1 wherein in said mixture are present at least 10% each of at least three different isomers of said -O-(C.sub.6 to C.sub.12 alkyl) radical, wherein said isomers predominantly have the same number of carbon atoms.
- 13. The polymer stabilizing composition of claim 4 wherein the weight ratio of said triaryl triazine ingredient to said HALS ingredient is from about 1:10 to about 10:1.
- 14. The polymer stabilizing composition of claim 1, further comprising another ultraviolet light stabilizer.
- 15. A method of stabilizing a polymer against the action of light, moisture, and oxygen by incorporating into said polymer a stabilizingly effective amount of a liquid stabilizing composition comprising (i) an organic solvent, and (ii) a mixture of triaryl triazine compounds each represented by the formula below: ##STR9## wherein independently for each of said compounds X, Y, and Z are each the same or different aromatic carbocyclic radicals, and at least one of X, Y, and Z is substituted by a hydroxy group ortho to the point of attachment to the triazine ring, and
- at least one of R.sup.1 to R.sup.9 is an alkoxy radical of the formula -O-(C.sub.6 to C.sub.12 alkyl) substituted at a point para to the point of attachment to the triazine ring, and the remainder of R.sup.1 to R.sup.9 are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, hydroxy, alkyl, alkoxy, sulfonic, carboxy, halo, haloalkyl, and acylamino;
- with the proviso that in said mixture are present at least 10% each of at least three different isomers of said -O-(C.sub.6 to C.sub.12 alkyl) radical, wherein % is based on the total -O-(C.sub.6 to C.sub.12 alkyl) radicals.
- 16. The method of claim 15 wherein the liquid stabilizing composition contains a HALS.
- 17. The method of claim 16 wherein the HALS is a 2,2,6,6-tetraalkylpiperidine hindered amine type light stabilizer including N-oxides, N-hydroxides, acid addition salts, and complexes with metal compounds thereof.
- 18. The method of claim 15 wherein for the stabilizing composition said triaryl triazine ingredient is present in an amount of from about 0.01 to about 5 wt % based on the weight of total polymer.
- 19. The method of claim 16 wherein for the stabilizing composition said HALS is present in an amount of from about 0.01 to about 5 wt % based on the weight of total polymer.
- 20. The method of claim 16 wherein the weight ratio of said triaryl triazine ingredient to said HALS ingredient is from about 1:10 to about 10:1.
- 21. The method of claim 15 wherein said polymer is selected from the group consisting of acrylics, alkyds, polyesters, polyurethanes, polysiloxanes, polyolefins, polycarbonates, polyamides, polyvinyl halides, styrenics, and epoxies.
- 22. The method of claim 15 wherein the organic solvent is selected from the group consisting of alkanes, halogenated alkanes, aromatic hydrocarbons, halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, aldehydes, esters, ethers, ketones, and mixtures thereof.
- 23. The method of claim 15 wherein the concentration of said triaryl triazine dissolved in solvent (i) is at a concentration of at least 40 weight percent based on the total weight of stabilizing composition.
- 24. The method of claim 15 wherein for each said triaryl triazine compound:
- (a) X, Y, and Z are each phenyl groups,
- (b) only one of X, Y, and Z is substituted by a hydroxy group ortho to the point of attachment to the triazine ring,
- (c) at least one -O-(C.sub.6 to C.sub.12 alkyl) radical is substituted, on the same phenyl group as said hydroxy group, at a point para to the point of attachment of the phenyl group to the triazine ring, and
- (d) the remainder of the R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4, R.sup.5, R.sup.6, R.sup.7, R.sup.8, and R.sup.9 are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and alkyl groups.
- 25. The method of claim 15 wherein said at least three different -O-(C.sub.6 to C.sub.12 alkyl) radicals are formed from a mixture of isomeric C.sub.6 to C.sub.12 alkyl halides containing at least 10% each of at least three different isomers.
- 26. The method of claim 25 wherein said at least three different-O-(C.sub.6 to C.sub.12 alkyl radicals are formed from a mixed isomeric alkyl halide derived from "Oxo" process alcohols.
- 27. The method of claim 15, wherein the polymer stabilizing composition further comprises another ultraviolet light stabilizer.
- 28. The method of claim 16, wherein the polymer stabilizing composition further comprises another ultraviolet light stabilizer.
- 29. The method of claim 25 wherein the alkyl group of said alkyl halide is predominantly an isomeric mixture of an alkyl group having the same number of carbon atoms.
- 30. A polymer stabilizing composition comprising (i) an organic solvent, and (ii) a mixture of triaryl triazine compounds each represented by the formula below: ##STR10## wherein independently for each of said compounds X, Y, and Z are each the same or different aromatic carbocyclic radicals, and
- at least one of X, Y, and Z is substituted by a hydroxy group ortho to the point of attachment to the triazine ring, and
- at least one of R.sup.1 to R.sup.9 is an alkoxy radical of the formula -O-(C.sub.6 to C.sub.8 alkyl) substituted at a point para to the point of attachment to the triazine ring, and
- the remainder of R.sup.1 to R.sup.9 are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, hydroxy, alkyl, alkoxy, sulfonic, carboxy, halo, haloalkyl, and acylamino;
- with the proviso that in said mixture are present at least 10% each of at least three different isomers of said -O-(C.sub.6 to C.sub.8 alkyl) radical, wherein % is based on the total -O-(C.sub.6 to C.sub.8 alkyl) radicals.
- 31. The polymer stabilizing composition of claim 30, wherein said at least three different -O-(C.sub.6 to C.sub.8 alkyl) radicals are formed from a mixture of isomeric C.sub.6 to C.sub.8 alkyl halides containing at least 10% each of at least three different isomers.
- 32. The polymer stabilizing composition of claim 30, wherein at least one of R.sup.1 to R.sup.9 is an alkoxy radical of the formula -O-(C.sub.6 alkyl) substituted at a point para to the point of attachment to the triazine ring, with the proviso that in said mixture are present at least 10% each of at least three different isomers of said -O-(C.sub.6 alkyl) radical, wherein % is based on the total -O-(C.sub.6 alkyl) radicals.
- 33. The polymer stabilizing composition of claim 32, wherein said at least three different -O-(C.sub.6 alkyl) radicals are formed from a mixture of isomeric C.sub.6 alkyl halides containing at least 10% each of at least three different isomers.
- 34. The polymer stabilizing composition of claim 30, wherein at least one of R.sup.1 to R.sup.9 is an alkoxy radical of the formula -O-(C.sub.8 alkyl) substituted at a point para to the point of attachment to the triazine ring, with the proviso that in said mixture are present at least 10% each of at least three different isomers of said -O-(C.sub.8 alkyl) radical, wherein % is based on the total -O-(C.sub.6 alkyl) radicals.
- 35. The polymer stabilizing composition of claim 34, wherein said at least three different -O-(C.sub.8 alkyl) radicals are formed from a mixture of isomeric C.sub.8 alkyl halides containing at least 10% each of at least three different isomers.
- 36. The polymer stabilizing composition of claim 30, further comprising a HALS.
- 37. The polymer stabilizing composition of claim 36, wherein the HALS is a2,2,6,6-tetraalkylpiperidine hindered amine type light stabilizer including N-oxides, N-hydroxides, N-alkoxides, acid addition salts, and complexes with metal compounds thereof.
- 38. The polymer stabilizing composition of claim 30, further comprising another ultraviolet light stabilizer.
- 39. The polymer stabilizing composition of claim 30, wherein triaryl triazine ingredient (ii) is at a concentration of at least 40 weight percent based on the total weight of the stabilizing composition.
- 40. A method of stabilizing a polymer against the action of light, moisture, and oxygen by incorporating into said polymer a stabilizingly effective amount of a liquid stabilizing composition comprising (i) an organic solvent, and (ii) a mixture of triaryl triazine compounds each represented by the formula below: ##STR11## wherein independently for each of said compounds X, Y, and Z are each the same or different aromatic carbocyclic radicals, and
- at least one of X, Y, and Z is substituted by a hydroxy group ortho to the point of attachment to the triazine ring, and
- at least one of R.sup.1 to R.sup.9 is an alkoxy radical of the formula -O-(C.sub.6 to C.sub.8 alkyl) substituted at a point para to the point of attachment to the triazine ring, and
- the remainder of R.sup.1 to R.sup.9 are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, hydroxy, alkyl, alkoxy, sulfonic, carboxy, halo, haloalkyl, and acylamino;
- with the proviso that in said mixture are present at least 10% each of at least three different isomers of said -O-(C.sub.6 to C.sub.8 alkyl) radical, wherein % is based on the total -O-(C.sub.6 to C.sub.8 alkyl) radicals.
- 41. The method of claim 40, wherein said at least three different -O-(C.sub.6 to C.sub.8 alkyl) radicals are formed from a mixture of isomeric C.sub.6 to C.sub.8 alkyl halides containing at least 10% each of at least three different isomers.
- 42. The method of claim 40, wherein at least one of R.sup.1 to R.sup.9 is an alkoxy radical of the formula -O-(C.sub.6 alkyl) substituted at a point para to the point of attachment to the triazine ring, with the proviso that in said mixture are present at least 10% each of at least three different isomers of said -O-(C.sub.6 alkyl) radical, wherein % is based on the total -O-(C.sub.6 alkyl) radicals.
- 43. The method of claim 42, wherein said at least three different -O-(C.sub.6 alkyl) radicals are formed from a mixture of isomeric C.sub.6 alkyl halides containing at least 10% each of at least three different isomers.
- 44. The method of claim 40, wherein at least one of R.sup.1 to R.sup.9 is an alkoxy radical of the formula -O-(C.sub.8 alkyl) substituted at a point para to the point of attachment to the triazine ring, with the proviso that in said mixture are present at least 10% each of at least three different isomers of said -O-(C.sub.6 alkyl) radical, wherein % is based on the total -O-(C.sub.8 alkyl) radicals.
- 45. The method of claim 44, wherein said at least three different -O-(C.sub.8 alkyl) radicals are formed from a mixture of isomeric C.sub.8 alkyl halides containing at least 10% each of at least three different isomers.
- 46. The method of claim 40, wherein the liquid stabilizing composition further comprises a HALS.
- 47. The method of claim 46, wherein the HALS is a 2,2,6,6-tetraalkylpiperidine hindered amine type light stabilizer including N-oxides, N-hydroxides, N-alkoxides, acid addition salts, and complexes with metal compounds thereof.
- 48. The method of claim 40, wherein the liquid stabilizing composition further comprises another ultraviolet light stabilizer.
- 49. The method of claim 40, wherein triaryl triazine ingredient (ii) is at a concentration of at least 40 weight percent based on the total weight of the stabilizing composition.
