Claims
- 1. A polymeric composition resistant to sterilizing radiation comprising:
- a) a polymer comprising units derived from an alkyl methacrylate, and units derived from N-hydrogen or N-alkyl dimethylglutarimide, and optionally units derived from methacrylic acid or glutaric anhydride;
- b) from about one-half to about two percent by weight based on monomer, of at least one aliphatic alcohol, the alcohol containing no more than ten carbon atoms.
- 2. The composition of claim 1 wherein the alcohol is a monohydric aliphatic alcohol or a polyhydric aliphatic alcohol.
- 3. The composition of claim 2 wherein the monohydric aliphatic alcohol is methyl alcohol or ethyl alcohol.
- 4. The composition of claim 2 wherein the polyhydric aliphatic alcohol is ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, or glycerine.
- 5. The composition of claim 2 wherein the alcohol is butyl lactate.
- 6. The composition of claim 1 wherein the alkyl methacrylate is methyl methacrylate, and the dimethylglutarimide is N-methyl dimethylglutarimide.
- 7. The composition of claim 1 wherein the weight-average molecular weight of the polymer is from about 100,000 to about 500,000.
- 8. A polymeric composition resistant to sterilizing radiation comprising:
- a) a polymer comprising units derived from at least one of an alkyl methacrylate or a N-hydrogen or N-alkyl dimethylglutarimide, and optionally units derived from methacrylic acid or glutaric anhydride wherein the amount of methacrylic ester is from about 90 to about 99 weight percent of the monomer mixture to be polymerized;
- b) from about one-half to about two percent by weight based on monomer, of at least one aliphatic alcohol, the alcohol containing no more than ten carbon atoms.
- c) an effective amount, not exceeding about 50 weight percent of the total polymeric composition, of an impact modifier.
- 9. The composition of claim 8 wherein the alcohol is a monohydric aliphatic alcohol or a polyhydric aliphatic alcohol.
- 10. The composition of claim 9 wherein the alcohol is at least one of methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, glycerine, or butyl lactate.
- 11. The composition of claim 8 wherein the alkyl methacrylate is methyl methacrylate, the dimethylglutarimide is N-methyl dimethylglutarimide, and the weight-average molecular weight of the polymer is from about 100,000 to about 500,000.
- 12. The composition of claim 8 wherein the impact modifier is a core/shell polymer containing a core predominantly of units derived from a lower alkyl acrylate.
- 13. The composition of claim 8 wherein the impact modifier is a core/shell polymer containing a hard core predominantly of units derived from a lower alkyl methacrylate, an intermediate stage predominantly of units derived from a lower alkyl acrylate, and a shell predominantly of units derived from a lower alkyl methacrylate.
- 14. The composition of claim 13 wherein the lower alkyl acrylate is butyl acrylate and the lower alkyl methacrylate is methyl methacrylate.
- 15. The composition of claim 12 wherein the core further contains units derived from a vinyl aromatic monomer.
- 16. The composition of claim 13 wherein the intermediate stage further contains units derived from a vinyl aromatic monomer.
- 17. The composition of claim 15 where the core and shell are refractive-index matched with the polymer comprising units of an alkyl methacrylate.
- 18. The composition of claim 16 where the core, intermediate stage, and shell are refractive-index matched with the polymer comprising units of an alkyl methacrylate.
