Claims
- 1. A kit for producing a stabilized solution of an aldehyde, the kit comprising:
a first packet including a solid form of a polymerized aldehyde and a first solid basic buffer; and, a second packet including a second solid basic buffer.
- 2. The kit of claim 1, wherein said first packet includes a third solid basic buffer.
- 3. The kit of claim 1, wherein said first solid basic buffer is sodium phosphate dibasic anhydrous and said second solid basic buffer is sodium phosphate monobasic monohydrate.
- 4. The kit of claim 1, wherein said first packet further includes a solid stabilizer.
- 5. The kit of claim 4, wherein said solid stabilizer is hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose.
- 6. The kit of claim 1, wherein said second packet further includes a solid stabilizer.
- 7. The kit of claim 6, wherein said stabilizer is hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose.
- 8. A kit for producing one liter of a stabilized solution of formaldehyde when combined with an aqueous solvent, the kit comprising:
a first packet including:
approximately 37.0 grams of paraformaldehyde; approximately 4.0 grams of sodium phosphate dibasic anhydrous; approximately 1.0 gram of sodium hydroxide; and, approximately 0.01 grams of hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose; and a second packet including approximately 6.5 grams of sodium phosphate monobasic monohydrate.
- 9. A method for producing a solution of aldehyde, the method comprising the steps of:
providing a first amount of an aqueous solvent; combining a second amount of a polymerized aldehyde and a third amount of a first basic buffer with said aqueous solvent; and, combining a fourth amount of a second basic buffer with said aqueous solvent.
- 10. The method of claim 9, wherein said aqueous solvent is water.
- 11. The method of claim 9, wherein said solution of aldehyde is a solution of formaldehyde, and said polymerized aldehyde is paraformaldehyde.
- 12. The method of claim 9, wherein said first basic buffer is sodium phosphate dibasic anhydrous.
- 13. The method of claim 9, wherein said second basic buffer is sodium phosphate monobasic monohydrate.
- 14. The method of claim 9, wherein said step of combining a second amount of a polymerized aldehyde and a third amount of a first basic buffer with said aqueous solvent, further includes the step of combining a third basic buffer with said aqueous solvent.
- 15. The method of claim 14, wherein said third basic buffer is sodium hydroxide.
- 16. A composition of matter comprising:
an aqueous solvent; a depolymerized aldehyde; and, a stabilizer.
- 17. The composition of matter of claim 16, wherein the aqueous solvent is water.
- 18. The composition of matter of claim 16, wherein the depolymerized aldehyde is formaldehyde.
- 19. The composition of matter of claim 16, wherein the stabilizer is hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose.
- 20. A kit, comprising:
a first packet containing powdered formaldehyde and a stablizer; a second packet containing a buffer material; and instructions for reconstituting an aqueous formaldehyde solution.
- 21. The kit of claim 20, wherein said stabilizer is selected from the group consisting of carboxypolysaccharides, proteins, fatty acid ethers, acidic nitrogen compounds, carageenan, hydroxylamine and hydrogen sulfide.
- 22. A kit, comprising:
a first packet containing a powdered fixative and a stabilizer; a second packet containing a buffer material; and instructions for reconstituting a solution of said fixative.
- 23. The kit of claim 22, further comprising another fixative.
- 24. The kit of claim 22, wherein said another fixative is selected from the group consisting of an aldehyde, picric acid, osmium tetraoxide, uranyl acetate, a dichromate, a permanganate, mercuric chloride and acrolein.
- 25. A method for using powdered formaldehyde as a histological fixative, comprising the steps of:
(a) providing a first material comprising powdered formaldehyde and a basic component of a buffer pair; (b) providing a second material comprising an acidic component of a buffer pair; (c) making a first aqueous solution of said first material; (d) making a second aqueous solution of said second material; (e) mixing said first and said second solutions; and (f) applying said solution obtained in step (c) to a piece of tissue until said tissue has become fixed.
- 26. A method for producing a non-liquid composition of an aldehyde, comprising the steps of:
(a) selecting a non-liquid aldehyde; (b) selecting a non-liquid buffer pair having an acidic member and a basic member of said pair; and (c) mixing said aldehyde and said basic member of said buffer pair together to form a mixture.
- 27. The method of claim 26, further comprising adding a non-liquid stabilizer.
- 28. The method of claim 26, further comprising pulverizing said mixture.
