Claims
- 1. A rigid polyvinyl chloride composition comprising in addition to said polyvinyl chloride, (1) an effective stabilizing amount of a 2,2,6,6-tetraalkylpiperidine compound which corresponds to the formula ##STR23## in which n is a number from 1-4 inclusive; R is hydrogen or methyl; R.sub.1 is hydrogen, oxyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.13 alkyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 alkenyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 alkynyl, C.sub.7 -C.sub.12 aralkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkanoyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.5 alkenoyl, glycidyl, a group --CH.sub.2 CH(OH)--Z.sub.1 wherein Z.sub.1 is hydrogen, phenyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkyl, allyl, benzyl, acetyl or acryloyl; and R.sub.2 when n is 1 is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.18 alkyl optionally interrupted by one or more oxygen atoms, cyanoethyl, benzyl, glycidyl, a monovalent radical of an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic or aromatic carboxylic acid, or of carbamic acid or of a phosphorus-containing acid, or a monovalent silyl radical, R.sub.2 when n is 2 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkylene, C.sub.4 -C.sub.12 alkenylene, xylylene, a bivalent radical of an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic or aromatic dicarboxylic acid, of dicarbamic acid or of a phosphorus-containing acid, or a bivalent silyl radical; R.sub.2 when n is 3 is a trivalent radical of an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic tricarboxylic acid, of an aromatic tricarbamic acid or of a phosphorus-containing acid, or a trivalent silyl radical; and R.sub.2 when n is 4 is a tetravalent radical of an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic tetracarboxylic acid; and (2) an effective thermal stabilizing amount of at least one organotin carboxylate of the formulae ##STR24## (b) (z).sub.2 Sn(OOC--Z.sup.3).sub.2 ##STR25## (d) (Z).sub.m Sn(OOCCH.dbd.CHCOOZ.sup.4).sub.4-m wherein
- Z and Z.sup.4 independently are C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl;
- Z.sup.1 is C.sub.10 -C.sub.30 alkyl or phenyl substituted by one or two C.sub.8 -C.sub.12 alkyl;
- Z.sup.2 is Z.sup.1 or --Sn(OZ.sup.1)(Z).sub.2 ;
- Z.sup.3 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.30 alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl; and
- m is an integer from 1 to 3.
- 2. The compositions of claim 1, wherein said 2,2,6,6-tetraalkylpiperidine compound is bis(2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidinyl)sebacate, bis(1-acetyl-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidinyl)sebacate, bis(1-benzyl-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidinyl)sebacate or N-butyl-(3,5-di-tert.butyl-4-hydroxybenzyl)-bis-(1,2,2,6,6-pentamethyl-4-piperidinyl)malonate.
- 3. The composition of claim 1, wherein said piperidine compound is present in a concentration of from 0.1 to 3.0% and said carboxylate is present in a concentration of from 1.0 to 5.0%, each by weight of polyvinyl chloride resin.
- 4. The composition of claim 3, wherein said concentrations are 0.25 to 1.5% and 1.5 to 4.0% respectively, by weight of polyvinyl chloride resin.
- 5. The composition of claim 1, wherein said carboxylate component is a blend of formulae (a) and (b).
- 6. The composition of claim 1, wherein said carboxylate is dibutyltin di-isotridecyloxide, dibutyltin di-isostearate, dibutyltin di-2-ethylhexanoate, dibutyltin dilaurate, dibutyltin ditetradecanoate or mixtures thereof.
- 7. The composition of claim 2, wherein said carboxylate is dibutyltin di-isotridecyloxide, dibutyltin di-isostearate, dibutyltin di-2-ethylhexanoate, dibutyltin dilaurate, dibutyltin di-tetradecanoate or mixtures thereof.
- 8. The composition of claim 1, which contains an additional organotin compound of the formulae
- (e) (Z).sub.m Sn(S--C.sub.p H.sub.2p COOZ.sup.4).sub.4-m
- (f) (Z.sup.5 S).sub.y Sn(Z.sup.6).sub.4-y
- wherein
- Z, Z.sup.4, Z.sup.5 and Z.sup.6 independently are C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl,
- m and y are integers from 1-3, and
- p is an integer from 1-5;
- said additional organotin compound replacing up to a maximum of about 70%, by weight, of said organotin carboxylate.
- 9. The composition of claim 8, wherein said additional organotin compound is formula (e) and p is 2.
- 10. The composition of claim 9, wherein said compound of formula (e) is dibutyltin bis(isotridecyl-.beta.-mercaptopropionate), dibutyltin bis(tetradecyl-.beta.-mercaptopropionate), octyltin tris(dodecyl-.beta.-mercaptopropionate) or dibutyltin bis(2-ethylhexyl-.beta.-mercaptopropionate).
- 11. The composition of claim 8, wherein said piperidine compound is bis(2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidinyl)sebacate, bis(1-acetyl-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidinyl)sebacate, bis(1-benzyl-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidinyl)sebacate or N-butyl-(3,5-di-tert.butyl-4-hydroxybenzyl)-bis-(1,2,2,6,6-pentamethyl-4-piperidinyl)malonate; said carboxylate is dibutyltin di-isotridecyloxide, dibutyltin di-isostearate, dibutyltin di-2-ethyl-hexanoate dibutyltin dilaurate, dibutyltin ditetradecanoate or mixtures thereof; and said additional organotin compound is dibutyltin bis(isotridecyl-.beta.-mercaptopropionate), dibutyltin bis(tetradecyl-.beta.-mercaptopropionate), octyltin tris(dodecyl-.beta.-mercaptopropionate) or dibutyltin bis(2-ethylhexyl-.beta.-mercaptopropionate).
- 12. The composition of claim 1 which also contains a maximum of 10% titanium dioxide, by weight of polyvinyl chloride resin.
- 13. The composition of claim 8 which also contains a maximum of 10% titanium dioxide, by weight of polyvinyl chloride resin.
- 14. The composition of claim 1 which also contains benzoates, benzotriazoles, benzophenones hindered phenols or mixtures thereof.
- 15. The composition of claim 8 which also contains benzoates, benzotriazoles, benzophenones, hindered phenols or mixtures thereof.
- 16. The composition of claim 11 which also contains benzoates, benzotriazoles, benzophenones, hindered phenols or mixtures thereof.
