Claims
- 1. A composition comprising an aqueous solution comprising a thiocarbonate selected from the group consisting of alkali and alkaline earth metal tetrathiocarbonates, and combinations thereof, and a polysulfide selected from the group consisting of alkali and alkaline earth metal sulfides of the formula M.sub.n S.sub.x, wherein M is selected from alkali and alkaline earth metals and combinations thereof, x is greater than 1, n is 2 when M is alkali metal, and n is 1 when M is an alkaline earth metal, and combinations thereof, the concentration of said polysulfide corresponding to at least about 0.02 equivalent of said polysulfide per equivalent of carbon disulfide in said tetrathiocarbonate and being sufficient to increase the stability of said thiocarbonate in said solution.
- 2. The composition defined in claim 1 comprising at least about 0.04 equivalent of said sulfide per equivalent of carbon disulfide in said thiocarbonate.
- 3. The composition defined in claim 1 comprising at least about 0.08 equivalent of said sulfide per equivalent of carbon disulfide in said thiocarbonate.
- 4. The composition defined in claim 1 further comprising one or more sulfides of said formula M.sub.n S.sub.x, wherein x is 1, and wherein said composition comprises at least about 0.04 equivalent of said polysulfide per equivalent of carbon disulfide in said thiocarbonate.
- 5. The composition defined in claim 1 having a carbon disulfide partial pressure corresponding to about 1 volume percent or less carbon disulfide in the equilibrium vapor phase overlying said solution at 24.degree. C.
- 6. The composition defined in claim 1 wherein the concentration of said tetrathiocarbonate in said solution corresponds to at least about 1 weight percent equivalent carbon disulfide.
- 7. The composition defined in claim 1 wherein the concentration of said thiocarbonate in said solution corresponds to at least about 5 weight percent equivalent carbon disulfide.
- 8. The composition defined in claim 1 wherein said thiocarbonate comprises a member selected from the group consisting of sodium, potassium, and calcium tetrathiocarbonates and combinations thereof, and M is selected from the group consisting of sodium, potassium and calcium, and combinations thereof.
- 9. The composition defined in any of claims 2, 3, 4, 7, or 8, wherein x is within the range of greater than 1 to about 5, and said composition further comprises a trithiocarbonate selected from the group consisting of alkali and alkaline earth metal trithiocarbonates and combinations thereof.
- 10. A composition comprising an aqueous solution of a thiocarbonate selected from the group consisting of alkali and alkaline earth metal tetrathiocarbonates, and combinations thereof, in a concentration corresponding to an equivalent carbon disulfide concentration of at least about 1 weight percent, and at least about 0.02 equivalent of a water soluble polysulfide per equivalent of carbon disulfide in said tetrathiocarbonate, said polysulfide being selected from alkali and alkaline earth metal sulfides having the formula M.sub.n S.sub.x, wherein M is alkali or alkaline earth metal, x is within the range of greater than 1 to about 5, n is 2 when M is alkali metal, and n is 1 when M is alkaline earth metal, said solution having a carbon disulfide partial pressure corresponding to a carbon disulfide concentration in the equilibrium vapor phase overlying said solution at 24.degree. C. of about 1 volume percent or less.
- 11. The composition defined in claim 10 comprising an amount of said tetrathiocarbonate corresponding to at least about 5 weight percent equivalent carbon disulfide, and said composition further comprises a trithiocarbonate selected from the group consisting of alkali and alkaline earth metal trithiocarbonates and combinations thereof.
- 12. The composition defined in claim 10 further comprising a sulfide of said formula M.sub.n S.sub.x, wherein x is 1.
- 13. The composition defined in claim 10 wherein said thiocarbonate comprises a member selected from the group consisting of sodium, potassium and calcium tetrathiocarbonate, and combinations thereof, and M is selected from the group consisting of sodium, potassium and calcium, and combinations thereof.
- 14. The composition defined in claim 1 or 10, wherein said tetrathiocarbonate is present in said solution at a concentration corresponding to at least about 10 weight percent equivalent carbon disulfide, and said polysulfide is present in said composition at a concentration corresponding to at least about 0.04 equivalent of said polysulfide per equivalent of carbon disulfide in said tetrathiocarbonate.
- 15. A method for controlling pests in soil, which pests are selected from the group consisting of nematodes, insects, fungi, bacteria and combinations thereof, in the soil, which method comprises applying to said soil a composition comprising the composition of any of claims 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 10-12 or 13.
- 16. A composition comprising a stabilized, aqueous solution of a tetrathiocarbonate selected from the group consisting of alkali and alkaline earth metal tetrathiocarbonates, and combinations thereof, and a polysulfide selected from alkali and alkaline earth metal polysulfides of the formula M.sub.n S.sub.x, wherein M is selected from alkali and alkaline earth metals and combinations thereof, x is greater than one, n is two when M is alkali metal, and n is one when M is an alkaline earth metal, and combinations thereof, the concentration of said polysulfide corresponding to at least about 0.02 equivalent of said polysulfide per equivalent of carbon disulfide in said tetrathiocarbonate and being sufficient to increase the stability of said tetrathiocarbonate in said solution, and the concentration of said tetrathiocarbonate corresponds to at least about 5 weight percent equivalent carbon disulfide.
- 17. The composition defined in claim 16 comprising at least about 0.04 equivalent of said polysulfide per equivalent of carbon disulfide in said tetrathiocarbonate, and wherein said composition further comprises a trithiocarbonate selected from the group consisting of alkali and alkaline earth metal trithiocarbonates, and combinations thereof.
- 18. The composition defined in claim 16 comprising at least about 0.08 equivalent of said polysulfide per equivalent of carbon disulfide in said tetrathiocarbonate.
- 19. The composition defined in claim 16, wherein said tetrathiocarbonate is present in said solution at a concentration corresponding to at least about 10 weight percent equivalent carbon disulfide, and said polysulfide is present in said solution at a concentration corresponding to at least about 0.04 equivalent of said polysulfide per equivalent of carbon disulfide.
- 20. A method for controlling pests, which comprises applying to the location occupied by said pests a composition comprising the composition of any one of claims 16, 18 or 19.
- 21. The composition defined in any one of claims 1, 23, or 40 further comprising a base.
- 22. The composition defined in claim 21, wherein said base comprises a member selected from the group consisting of alkali and alkaline earth metal hydroxides and combinations thereof.
- 23. The composition defined in any one of claims 1, 10, or 16, wherein the source of carbon disulfide in said solution consists essentially of (A) one or more tetrathiocarbonates selected from the group consisting of alkali and alkaline earth metal tetrathiocarbonates and combinations thereof, (B) one or more trithiocarbonates selected from the group consisting of alkali and alkaline earth metal trithiocarbonates and combinations therof, (C) one or more sulfides selected from the group consisting of alkali and alkaline earth metal sulfides of the formula M.sub.n S.sub.x, wherein M is selected from alkali and alkaline earth metals and combinations thereof, x is 1, n is 2 when M is alkali metal, and n is 1 when M is an alkaline earth metal, and combinations thereof, and (D) one or more polysulfides selected from the group consisting of alkali and alkaline earth metal polysulfides of the formula M.sub.n S.sub.x, wherein M is selected from alkali and alkaline earth metals and combinations thereof, x is within the range of greater than 1 to about 5, n is 2 when M is alkali metal, and n is 1 when M is an alkaline earth metal, and combinations thereof.
- 24. The composition defined in claim 23 further comprising a base.
- 25. The composition defined in claim 24, wherein said base comprises a member selected from the group consisting of alkali and alkaline earth metal hydroxides and combinations thereof.
