Claims
- 1. A stabilizer for motor vehicles, said stabilizer being formed of a metallic pipe having a U-shape with a back member connected to a pair of legs via arc-shaped transitional shoulder members; wherein the transitional shoulder members are in a condition free of mechanical deformation work, and wherein said back member has been subjected to mechanical deformation work softening.
- 2. The stabilizer as claimed in claim 1, wherein the mechanical deformation work softening comprises a reduction of at least one of an outer diameter and wall thickness of the back member relative to an outer diameter and wall thickness of said transitional shoulder members.
- 3. The stabilizer as claimed in claim 1, wherein the mechanical deformation work softening comprises a reduction of an outer diameter of the back member relative to an outer diameter of said transitional shoulder members.
- 4. The stabilizer as claimed in claim 1, wherein the mechanical deformation work softening comprises a reduction of a wall thickness of the back member relative to a wall thickness of said transitional shoulder members.
- 5. The stabilizer as claimed in claim 1, wherein said stabilizer has a cross-sectional shape selected from the group consisting of generally round, spherical, annular and toroidal shapes.
- 6. The stabilizer as claimed in claim 1, wherein said stabilizer has a toroidal cross-sectional shape.
- 7. The stabilizer as claimed in claim 1, wherein the outer surface of said stabilizer has been carburized to increase the carbon content of a surface edge layer relative to an inner surface of the stabilizer.
- 8. The stabilizer as claimed in claim 7, wherein said stabilizer has been shot peened at least in said arcuate shoulder sections.
- 9. The stabilizer as claimed in claim 8, wherein the overall strength of said stabilizer has been increased by annealing.
- 10. The stabilizer as claimed in claim 1, wherein the overall strength of said stabilizer has been increased by an inner surface of a section of said stabilizer having been at least partially shot peened.
