Claims
- 1. Foamable composition adapted for storage in a pressurized aerosol container having a valve associated therewith for dispensing the contents of said container in the form of a stable foam, said composition comprising
(a) an aqueous emulsion comprising a film forming polymer (b) a liquid propellant; and (c) a solid, lipophilic non-ionic surfactant having an HLB value of about 3-8, said composition exhibiting a volumetric expansion about 18-24 hours after said dispensing of about 0.45 and greater.
- 2. Composition as recited in claim 1 wherein said film forming polymer comprises an emulsion including polyvinylacetate/ethylene copolymer and styrene/acrylic copolymer.
- 3. Composition as recited in claim 1 wherein said propellant comprises a liquefied gas component including a lower (C1-C6) alkane or (C1-C6) lower alkene.
- 4. Composition as recited in claim 3 wherein said lower (C1-C6) alkane is present and comprises propane, isobutane, and n-butane.
- 5. Composition as recited in claim 1 wherein said propellant further comprises DME, and wherein said lower (C1-C6) alkane is present said DME being present in a ratio by volume of DME: lower (C1-C6) alkane of from about 1:about 1-5.
- 6. Composition as recited in claim 5 wherein said DME is present in a ratio by volume of DME: lower (C1-C6) alkane of about 1:2.
- 7. Composition as recited in claim 1 wherein said surfactant comprises a member selected from the group consisting of fatty alcohol ethers, fatty acid esters and fatty acid amides.
- 8. Composition as recited in claim 7 wherein said surfactant has an HLB of about 3.5-about 6.
- 9. Composition as recited in claim 8 wherein said fatty alcohol ether comprises an alkoxylated fatty alcohol.
- 10. Composition as recited in claim 9 wherein said fatty alcohol ether comprises ethoxylated (2 moles) cetyl alcohol.
- 11. Composition as recited in claim 9 wherein said fatty alcohol ether comprises ethoxylated (2 moles) stearyl alcohol.
- 12. Composition as recited in claim 8 wherein said fatty amide comprises an amide of stearic acid.
- 13. Composition as recited in claim 8 wherein said fatty acid ester comprises an ethylene glycol ester of stearic acid.
- 14. Foamable caulk or insulating composition adapted for storage in a pressurized aerosol container having a valve associated therewith for dispensing the contents of said container in the form of a stable foam, said composition comprising
(a) an aqueous emulsion comprising a film forming polymer (b) a liquid propellant; and (c) a solid, lipophilic non-ionic surfactant having an HLB value of about 3-8, said composition exhibiting a volumetric expansion about 18-24 hours after said dispensing of about 0.45 and greater.
- 15. Foamable caulk or insulating composition for storage under pressure inside a dispenser, said dispenser adapted for release of a foamed bead or strand of said caulk or insulating composition, said composition comprising
(a) an aqueous emulsion comprising a film forming polymer (b) a solid, water insoluble lipophilic surfactant having an HLB value of about 3-about 8; and (c) a liquid propellant wherein said water insoluble lipophilic surfactant is present in an amount of about 1-10 wt % based upon the total weight of (a) and (b), said composition, after foamed release from said dispenser, exhibiting a percentage volumetric expansion about 18-24 hours after said release, of about 0.6 and greater.
- 16. Composition as recited in claim 15 wherein after said release, said composition exhibits an expansion of about 1.0 and greater.
- 17. Composition as recited in claim 16 wherein said film forming polymer comprises styrene/acrylic copolymer and polyvinyl acetate/ethylene copolymer in a weight ratio of about 0.5-0.6-styrene/acrylic copolymer: polyvinyl acetate/ethylene copolymer.
- 18. Composition as recited in claim 17 wherein said propellant is present in an amount of about 2-10 wt % based on the total weight of (a) (b) and (c).
- 19. Composition as recited in claim 18 wherein said propellant is present in an amount of about 4-6 wt %.
- 20. Composition as recited in claim 15 wherein said surfactant comprises a member selected from the group consisting of fatty alcohol ethers, fatty acid esters and fatty acid amides.
- 21. Composition as recited in claim 20 wherein said surfactant has an HLB of about 3.5 to about 6.
- 22. Composition as recited in claim 21 wherein said fatty alcohol ether comprises an alkoxylated fatty alcohol.
- 23. Composition as recited in claim 22 wherein said alkoxylated fatty alcohol comprises ethoxylated (2) cetyl alcohol.
- 24. Composition as recited in claim 22 wherein said alkoxylated fatty alcohol comprises ethoxylated (2) stearyl ether.
- 25. Composition as recited in claim 21 wherein said fatty acid amide comprises an amide of stearic acid.
- 26. Composition as recited in claim 21 wherein said fatty acid ester comprises an ethylene glycol ester of stearic acid.
- 27. Composition as recited in claim 15 further comprising isopropanol (d) in an amount of about 1-10 wt % based upon the combined weight of (a) (b) and (d).
- 28. Composition as recited in claim 27 wherein said aqueous emulsion comprising said film forming polymer is present in an amount of about 50-98% based on the total weight of (a) (b), (c) and (d).
- 29. Foamable composition comprising:
(a) an aqueous emulsion comprising a film forming polymer; (b) a surfactant selected from the group consisting of I) ethoxylated fatty alcohol ethers and ii) fatty acid esters, and mixtures thereof, said I) and ii) being solid, water insoluble lipophilic surfactants having an HLB value of between about 3 and 8; and (c) a liquid propellant, wherein said surfactant (b) is present in an amount of about 1-10 wt % based upon the total weight of (a) and (b).
- 30. Foamable composition as recited in claim 29 wherein said surfactant comprises a mixture of I) and ii), wherein I) is an ethoxylated fatty alcohol, and ii) is an ethylene glycol ester of said fatty acid.
- 31. Foamable composition s recited in claim 30 wherein said ethoxylated fatty alcohol comprises a blend of ethoxylated cetyl alcohol and ethoxylated stearyl alcohol and wherein said ethylene glycol ester of said fatty acid comprises ethylene glycol distearate; said surfactant being present in said composition in an amount of about 1-10 wt % based upon the weight of said emulsion and said surfactant.
- 32. Foamable composition as recited in claim 31 wherein said ethoxylated cetyl alcohol is present in an amount of about 1.0%, said ethoxylated stearyl alcohol is present in an amount of about 0.7%, and said ethylene glycol distearate is present in an amount of about 0.7%.
- 33. Method of filling joints, cracks or spaces existing between adjacent structural units comprising applying to said joint, crack or space a sufficient filling amount of a foamable composition comprising:
(a) an aqueous emulsion comprising a film forming polymer (b) a liquid propellant; and (c) a solid, lipophilic non-ionic surfactant having an HLB value of about 3-8, said composition exhibiting a volumetric expansion about 18-24 hours after said dispensing of about 0.45 and greater.
- 34. Method as recited in claim 33 wherein said film forming polymer comprises an emulsion including polyvinylacetate/ethylene copolymer and styrene/acrylic copolymer.
- 35. Method as recited in claim 33 wherein said propellant comprises a liquefied gas component including a lower (C1-C6) alkane or (C1-C6) lower alkene.
- 36. Method as recited in claim 35 wherein said lower (C1C6) alkane is present and comprises propane, isobutane, and n-butane.
- 37. Method as recited in claim 33 wherein said propellant further comprises DME, and wherein said lower (C1-C6) alkane is present said DME being present in a ratio by volume of DME: lower (C1-C6) alkane of from about 1: about 1-5.
- 38. Method as recited in claim 37 wherein said DME is present in a ratio by volume of DME: lower (C1-C6) alkane of about 1:2.
- 39. Method as recited in claim 33 wherein said surfactant comprises a member selected from the group consisting of fatty alcohol ethers, fatty acid esters and fatty acid amides.
- 40. Method as recited in claim 39 wherein said surfactant has an HLB of about 3.5-about 6.
- 41. Method as recited in claim 40 wherein said fatty alcohol ether comprises an alkoxylated fatty alcohol.
- 42. Method as recited in claim 41 wherein said fatty alcohol ether comprises ethoxylated (2 moles) cetyl alcohol.
- 43. Method as recited in claim 41 wherein said fatty alcohol ether comprises ethoxylated (2 moles) stearyl alcohol.
- 44. Method as recited in claim 40 wherein said fatty amide comprises an amide of stearic acid.
- 45. Method as recited in claim 40 wherein said fatty acid ester comprises an ethylene glycol ester of stearic acid.
- 46. Method of forming an artificial terrain useful as a structural support or background for a hobby or craft article comprising providing a mass of foamable composition, said composition comprising:
(a) an aqueous emulsion comprising a film forming polymer (b) a liquid propellant; and (c) a solid, lipophilic non-ionic surfactant having an HLB value of about 3-8, said composition exhibiting a volumetric expansion about 18-24 hours after said dispensing of about 0.45 and greater.
- 47. Method as recited in claim 46 wherein said film forming polymer comprises an emulsion including polyvinylacetate/ethylene copolymer and styrene/acrylic copolymer.
- 48. Method as recited in claim 46 wherein said propellant comprises a liquefied gas component including a lower (C1-C6) alkane or (C1-C6) lower alkene.
- 49. Method as recited in claim 48 wherein said lower (C1-C6) alkane is present and comprises propane, isobutane, and n-butane.
- 50. Method as recited in claim 46 wherein said propellant further comprises DME, and wherein said lower (C1-C6) alkane is present said DME being present in a ratio by volume of DME: lower (C1-C6) alkane of from about 1:about 1-5.
- 51. Method as recited in claim 50 wherein said DME is present in a ratio by volume of DME: lower (C1-C6) alkane of about 1:2.
- 52. Method as recited in claim 46 wherein said surfactant comprises a member selected from the group consisting of fatty alcohol ethers, fatty acid esters and fatty acid amides.
- 53. Method as recited in claim 52 wherein said surfactant has an HLB of about 3.5-about 6.
- 54. Method as recited in claim 53 wherein said fatty alcohol ether comprises an alkoxylated fatty alcohol.
- 55. Method as recited in claim 54 wherein said fatty alcohol ether comprises ethoxylated (2 moles) cetyl alcohol.
- 56. Method as recited in claim 54 wherein said fatty alcohol ether comprises ethoxylated (2) stearyl alcohol.
- 57. Method as recited in claim 53 wherein said fatty amide comprises an amide of stearic acid.
- 58. Method as recited in claim 53 wherein said fatty acid ester comprises an ethylene glycol ester of stearic acid.
