Claims
- 1. An aqueous free flowing composition comprising:
(a) at least one anionic surfactant, (b) at least one alkanolamide; (c) at least one electrolyte; and (d) water, wherein the at least one anionic surfactant, the at least one alkanolamide, and the at least one electrolyte are present in a combined amount such that the composition possesses non-Newtonian shear thinning properties and a stable viscosity under at least one freeze/thaw cycle.
- 2. The composition of claim 1 further comprising at least one additional surfactant selected from the group consisting of nonionic, amphoteric, zwitterionic, and cationic surfactants, or a combination thereof.
- 3. The composition of claim 1 further comprising at least one compound selected from the group consisting essentially of water-insoluble particles, partially insoluble components, and benefit agents.
- 4. The free flowing composition of claim 1 wherein the initial viscosity of the free flowing composition is equal to or greater than 3,000 cps.
- 5. The free flowing composition of claim 1 wherein the free flowing composition is stable under at least three freeze/thaw cycles.
- 6. The free flowing composition of claim 1 wherein the at least one anionic surfactant is selected from the group consisting of surfactants having a branched aliphatic chain, an unsaturated aliphatic chain, and combinations thereof.
- 7. The free flowing composition of claim 1 wherein the anionic surfactant is sodium trideceth sulfate.
- 8. The free flowing composition of claim 1 wherein the alkonolamide is selected from the group consisting of alkanolamides having a branched aliphatic chain, an unsaturated aliphatic chain, and combinations thereof.
- 9. The free flowing composition of claim 1 wherein the alkanolamide is represented by the formula:
- 10. The free flowing composition of claim 1 wherein the at least one additional surfactant comprises sodium lauroamphoacetate.
- 11. The composition of claim 1 wherein the at least one anionic surfactant comprises about 5% to about 30% by weight of the composition, the at least one alkanolamide comprises about 0.1% to about 10% by weight of the composition, and the at least one electrolyte comprises about 0.1% to about 15% by weight of the composition.
- 12. The composition of claim 1 wherein the at least one anionic surfactant comprises about 10% to about 20% by weight of the composition, the at least one alkanolamide comprises about 2% to about 5% by weight of the composition, and the at least one electrolyte comprises about 1% to about 6% by weight of the composition.
- 13. The composition of claim 3 wherein the benefit agent is selected from the group consisting of anti-dandruff agents, pigments or opacifying agents, moisturizing beads, natural abrasives, synthetic abrasives such as polyoxyethylene beads, sunscreen agents, vegetable oils, animal fats, mineral oils, petrolatum, silicone oils, polyalkylsiloxanes, polyalkyarylsiloxanes, esters, fatty acids and alcohols, depigmentation agents, reflectants, UV absorbers, thickening agents, detangling/wet combing agents, film forming polymers, humectants, amino acids and their derivatives, antimicrobial agents, anti-acne agents, anti-aging agents, antiseptics, analgesics, local anesthetics, anti-hair loss agents, hair growth inhibitor agents, inflammation inhibitors, proteins, deodorants and antiperspirants, agents for treatment of dandruff, seborreheic dermatitis and psoriasis, skin emollients, skin moisturizers, hair conditioners, hair softeners, hair moisturizers, vitamins, tanning agents, skin lightening agents, antifungals, depilating agents, counterirritants, hemorrhoidals, insecticides, sunscreens, and mixtures thereof.
- 14. The free flowing composition of claim 13 wherein the anti-dandruff agent is selected from the group consisting of zinc pyrithione and mica.
- 15. The free flowing composition of claim 13 wherein the vegetable oil is selected from the group consisting of arachis oil, castor oil, cocoa butter, coconut oil, corn oil, cotton seed oil, olive oil, palm kernel oil, rapeseed oil, safflower seed oil, sesame seed oil and soybean oil.
- 16. The free flowing composition of claim 13 wherein the ester is selected from the group consisting of butyl myristate, cetyl palmitate, decyloleate, glyceryl laurate, glyceryl ricinoleate, glyceryl stearate, glyceryl isostearate, hexyl laurate, isobutyl palmitate, isocetyl stearate, isopropyl isostearate, isopropyl laurate, isopropyl linoleate, isopropyl myristate, isopropyl palmitate, isopropyl stearate, propylene glycol monolaurate, propylene glycol ricinoleate, propylene glycol stearate, and propylene glycol isostearate vegetable oil is selected from the group consisting of arachis oil, castor oil, cocoa butter, coconut oil, corn oil, cotton seed oil, olive oil, palm kernel oil, rapeseed oil, safflower seed oil, sesame seed oil and soybean oil.
- 17. The free flowing composition of claim 13 wherein the animal fat is selected from the group consisting of acetylated lanolin alcohols, lanolin, lard, mink oil and tallow.
- 18. The free flowing composition of claim 13 wherein the fatty acid and alcohol is selected from the group consisting of behenic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid, behenyl alcohol, cetyl alcohol, eicosanyl alcohol, isocetyl alcohol.
- 19. The composition of claim 13 wherein the benefit agent is a UV absorber useful in skin care applications to protect skin from UV light.
- 20. The composition of claim 13 wherein the benefit agent is a UV absorber useful in hair care applications to protect hair from UV light.
- 21. The composition of claim 13 wherein the benefit agent is a hair conditioning agent.
- 22. The composition of claim 21 wherein the hair conditioning agent is selected from the group consisting of silicones, silicone derivatives, natural oils, nonionic surfactants, waxes, synthetic oils, cationic surfactants, and polymers.
- 23. The composition of claim 13 wherein the benefit agent is selected from the group consisting of hair and skin conditioning agents for child care formulations.
- 24. The composition of claim 23 wherein the benefit agent is selected from the group consisting of silicones, silicone derivatives, natural oils, nonionic surfactants, waxes, synthetic oils, cationic surfactants, and polymers.
- 25. The composition of claim 23 wherein the child care formulation is selected from the group consisting of tear free shampoos, children's conditioning shampoos and baby baths.
- 26. The composition of claim 13 wherein the benefit agent is selected from the group consisting of skin treatment agents and skin conditioning agents.
- 27. The composition of claim 26 wherein the benefit agent is selected from the group consisting of salicylic acid, alpha hydroxy acids, vitamins, vitamin complexes, abrasives, silicones, silicone derivatives, natural oils, synthetic oils, and polymers.
- 28. The composition of claim 13 wherein the benefit agent is selected from the group consisting of anti-bacterial agents.
- 29. The composition of claim 28 wherein the anti-bacterial agent is selected from the group consisting of triclosan, TCC, CHG, zinc pyrithione, PCMX, and selenium sulfide.
- 30. The composition of claim 13 wherein the benefit agent comprises hair styling polymers.
- 31. The composition of claim 13 wherein the benefit agent is selected from the group consisting of conditioning polymers possessing high molecular weights and conditioning polymers possessing high cationic charge densities.
- 32. The composition of claim 13 wherein the benefit agent comprises a precipitated conditioning polymer.
- 33. The composition of claim 13 wherein the benefit agent comprises a surfactant usually associated with solid formulations.
- 34. The composition of claim 33 wherein the surfactant comprises cocoyl isethionate.
- 35. The composition of claim 13 wherein the benefit agent comprises a swellable polymer that hydrates only on application.
- 36. A stable, multi phase personal care formulation comprising the composition of claim 1.
- 37. The personal care formulation of claim 36 wherein the personal care formulation is selected from the group consisting of striped body washes, hair shampoos, skin cleansers, child care formulations, facial washes, and skin treatments.
- 38. A method for making an aqueous free flowing composition comprising admixing:
(a) at least one anionic surfactant, (b) at least one alkanolamide; (c) at least one electrolyte; and (d) water, wherein the at least one anionic surfactant, the at least one alkanolamide, and the at least one electrolyte are present in a combined amount such that the composition possesses non-Newtonian shear thinning properties and a stable viscosity under at least one freeze/thaw cycle.
- 39. The method of claim 38 further comprising incorporating into the composition at least one compound selected from the group consisting essentially of water-insoluble particles, partially insoluble components, and benefit agents.
- 40. The method of claim 39 wherein the at least one compound is a solid.
- 41. The method of claim 39 wherein the at least one compound is a liquid.
- 42. The method of claim 39 wherein the at least one compound is a gas.
- 43. An aqueous free flowing composition consisting essentially of:
(a) at least one anionic surfactant, (b) at least one alkanolamide; (c) at least one electrolyte; and (d) water, wherein the at least one anionic surfactant, the at least one alkanolamide, and the at least one electrolyte are present in a combined amount such that the composition possesses non-Newtonian shear thinning properties and a stable viscosity under at least one freeze/thaw cycle.
- 44. The composition of claim 43 further comprising at least one additional surfactant selected from the group consisting of nonionic, amphoteric, zwitterionic, and cationic surfactants, or a combination thereof.
- 45. The composition of claim 43 further comprising at least one compound selected from the group consisting essentially of water-insoluble particles, partially insoluble components, and benefit agents.
- 46. The free flowing composition of claim 43 wherein the initial viscosity of the free flowing composition is equal to or greater than 3,000 cps.
- 47. The free flowing composition of claim 43 wherein the free flowing composition is stable under at least three freeze/thaw cycles.
- 48. The free flowing composition of claim 43 wherein the at least one anionic surfactant is selected from the group consisting of surfactants having a branched aliphatic chain, an unsaturated aliphatic chain, and combinations thereof.
- 49. The free flowing composition of claim 43 wherein the alkonolamide is selected from the group consisting of alkanolamides having a branched aliphatic chain, an unsaturated aliphatic chain, and combinations thereof.
- 50. The composition of claim 43 wherein the at least one anionic surfactant comprises about 5% to about 30% by weight of the composition, the at least one alkanolamide comprises about 0.1% to about 10% by weight of the composition, and the at least one electrolyte comprises about 0.1% to about 15% by weight of the composition.
- 51. The composition of claim 43 wherein the at least one anionic surfactant comprises about 10% to about 20% by weight of the composition, the at least one alkanolamide comprises about 2% to about 5% by weight of the composition, and the at least one electrolyte comprises about 1% to about 6% by weight of the composition.
