Claims
- 1. A uniformly stain-resistant producer-colored nylon fiber comprising:
- (a) a sulfonated nylon copolymer containing 0.25-4.0 weight percent of an aromatic sulfonate or an alkali metal salt thereof; and
- (b) a colored pigment mixture containing at least one non-white organic pigment, said colored pigment mixture being finely divided and uniformly dispersed in the sulfonated nylon copolymer,
- said fiber having a 24 hour stain-rating of 4 or 5, without topical treatment, as determined according to any of Stain Tests 1, 2 or 3 described hereinbefore and having a non-white color as provided by the colored pigment mixture.
- 2. The fiber of claim 1 where said fiber has a CIELAB L* value less than 88 or, if the CIELAB L* value is 88 or greater, having a CIELAB C* value greater than 8.
- 3. The fiber of claim 1 wherein the aromatic sulfonate is a sulfonated dicarboxylic acid or a diester of said sulfonated dicarboxylic acid.
- 4. The fiber of claim 1 where the aromatic sulfonate is 5-sulfoisophthalic acid or an alkali metal salt thereof.
- 5. The fiber of claim 1 wherein the sulfonated nylon copolymer contains 1.0-2.0 percent by weight of the sodium salt of 5-sulfoisophthalic acid.
- 6. The fiber of claim 1 where the aromatic sulfonate is 5-sulfoisophthalic acid or an alkali metal salt thereof and the colored pigment mixture is in the form of a concentrate formulation comprising a polymeric additive and at least one non-white organic pigment.
- 7. The fiber of claim 6 wherein the polymeric additive contains less than 40 percent nylon 6.
- 8. The fiber of claim 1 or claim 6 where the sulfonated nylon copolymer is a nylon 6,6 copolymer.
- 9. The fiber of claim 1 or claim 6 where the sulfonated nylon copolymer is a nylon 6 copolymer.
- 10. The fiber of claim 1 or claim 6 wherein at least one inorganic pigment is also present in the colored pigment mixture.
- 11. The fiber of claim 1 or claim 6 where the fiber is a hollow-filament.
- 12. The fiber of claim 1 or claim 6 where the fiber is in the form of a bulked continuous filament yarn.
- 13. The fiber of claim 1 or claim 6 where the fiber is in the form of a staple yarn.
- 14. The fiber of claim 1 also containing 10-100 ppm of copper in the form of cuprous or cupric ions.
- 15. A carpet fabricated from the fiber of claim 1.
- 16. A knitted product fabricated from the fiber of claim 1.
