Claims
- 1. An article of manufacture comprising:
- a. a transparent nonmetallic substrate;
- b. a transparent coating of a metal selected from the group consisting of silver, copper, gold, platinum, palladium and mixtures thereof; and
- c. a transparent protective overcoat comprising a metal having a dense oxide surface layer.
- 2. An article of manufacture comprising:
- a. a transparent nonmetallic substrate;
- b. a transparent primer layer which bonds oxidatively to the substrate surface;
- c. a transparent coating of a metal selected from the group consisting of silver, copper, gold, platinum, palladium and mixtures thereof; and
- d. a transparent protective overcoat of a metal which forms a dense oxide surface layer.
- 3. An article according to claim 2, wherein
- a. the substrate is glass; and
- b. the primer layer and overcoat are selected from the group consisting of stainless steel, titanium, vanadium, chromium, aluminum, tin, tantalum and nickel alloys.
- 4. An article according to claim 3, wherein the primer layer and overcoat are stainless steel, and the coating is selected from the group consisting of silver, copper and mixtures thereof.
- 5. An article according to claim 4, wherein the coating comprises a first layer of silver and a second layer of copper.
- 6. An article according to claim 5, wherein the stainless steel, silver and copper layers are of relative thicknesses which produce a low reflectance, pinkish colored article.
