Claims
- 1. An oral composition having antimicrobial activity effective for reducing plaque and gingivitis, said composition comprising:a. a stannous ion source that comprises a stannous salt other than stannous fluoride or stannous monofluorophosphate and is capable of delivering from about 3,000 ppm to about 15,000 ppm stannous ions, b. a fluoride ion source, and c. a polymeric surface active agent, which is a polyelectrolyte selected from the group consisting of condensed phosphorylated polymers; polyphosphonates; carboxy-substituted alcohol polymers; copolymers of phosphonate- or phosphonate-containing monomers or polymers with ethylenically unsaturated monomers, amino acids, or with other polymers selected from proteins, polypeptides, polysaccharides, poly(acrylate), poly(acrylamide), poly(methacrylate), poly(ethacrylate), poly(hydroxyalkylmethacrylate), poly(vinyl alcohol), poly(maleic anhydride), poly(maleate) poly(amide), poly(ethylene amine), poly(ethylene glycol), poly(propylene glycol), poly(vinyl acetate) or poly(vinyl benzyl chloride); and mixtures thereof, wherein said polymeric surface active agent binds stannous ions.
- 2. The oral composition according to claim 1 wherein the fluoride ion source is capable of providing from about 50 ppm to about 3500 ppm of fluoride ions.
- 3. The oral composition according to claim 1 comprising from about 1% to about 35% by weight of the composition of the polymeric surface active agent.
- 4. The oral composition according to claim 1 wherein the fluoride ion source comprises stannous fluoride.
- 5. The oral composition according to claim 4 wherein the stannous ion source comprises stannous chloride dihydrate.
- 6. The oral composition according to claim 5 additionally comprising a gluconate salt.
- 7. The oral composition according to claim 1 wherein the stannous ion source and fluoride ion source are physically separated from the polymeric surface active agent.
- 8. The oral composition according to claim 1 wherein the ratio of said composition's in-vitro Plaque Glycolysis Regrowth Model score to in-vitro Pellicle Tea Stain Model score is at least about 1.2.
- 9. The oral composition according to claim 1 wherein the composition's in-vitro Plaque Glycolysis Regrowth Model score is at least about 60%.
- 10. The oral composition according to claim 1 wherein the composition's in-vitro Pellicle Tea Stain Model score is less than about 75%.
- 11. The oral composition according to claim 9 wherein the composition's in-vitro Plaque Glycolysis Regrowth Model score is at least about 70%.
- 12. The oral composition according to claim 9 wherein the composition's in-vitro Plaque Glycolysis Regrowth Model score is at least about 80%.
- 13. The oral composition according to claim 10 wherein the composition's in-vitro Pellicle Tea Stain Model score is less than about 60%.
- 14. The oral composition according to claim 10 wherein the composition's in-vitro Pellicle Tea Stain Model score is less than about 50%.
- 15. The oral composition according to claim 10 wherein the composition's in-vitro Pellicle Tea Stain Model score is less than about 25%.
- 16. The oral composition according to claim 1 wherein the oral composition is free of alkali metal pyrophosphate salt.
- 17. The oral formulation according to claim 1 wherein the oral composition additionally comprises a poloxamer.
- 18. A method of reducing tartar, plaque and gingivitis in a subject, comprising administering to said subject's oral cavity a composition comprisinga. a stannous ion source that comprises a stannous salt other than stannous fluoride or stannous monofluorophosphate and is capable of delivering from about 3,000 ppm to about 15,000 ppm stannous ions, b. a fluoride ion source, and c. a polymeric surface active agent, which is a polyelectrolyte selected from the group consisting of polyphosphonates; carboxy-substituted alcohol polymers; copolymers of phosphonate- or phosphonate-containing monomers or polymers with ethylenically unsaturated monomers, amino acids, or with other polymers selected from proteins, polypeptides, polysaccharides, poly(acrylate), poly(acrylamide), poly(methacrylate), poly(ethacrylate), poly(hydroxyalkylmethacrylate), poly(vinyl alcohol), poly(maleic anhydride), poly(maleate) poly(amide), poly(ethylene amine), poly(ethylene glycol), poly(propylene glycol), poly(vinyl acetate) or poly(vinyl benzyl chloride); and mixtures thereof, wherein said polymeric surface active agent binds stannous ions.
