Claims
- 1. A starch-based microcellular foam comprising a solid phase matrix of gelatinized starch having an amylose content of at least 40% or greater amylose, said solid phase matrix having therein a network of small open cells having a liquid or solid substance encapsulated therein, wherein the density of said solid phase matrix in the absence of said encapsulated liquid or solid substance is about 0.32 gm/cm.sup.3 or less, and the surface area is 50 m.sup.2 /gm or greater and wherein at least about 80% of said open cells of said matrix are about 10 .mu.m or smaller in size.
- 2. The starch-based microcellular foam of claim 1, wherein said starch-based microcellular foam is prepared by:
- (1) treating an aquagel prepared from gelatinized starch with a first exchange liquid, wherein said first exchange liquid comprises a nonaqueous liquid component which is effective for displacing water in the aquagel, said treatment comprising equilibrating said aquagel in said first exchange liquid for a time sufficient to displace at least about 80% of the water in said aquagel to thereby obtain an intermediate gel;
- (2) displacing said first exchange liquid from said intermediate gel by equilibrating said gel with a second exchange liquid, wherein said second exchange liquid comprises a nonaqueous liquid component which is effective for displacing said first exchange liquid, said displacing comprising equilibrating for a time sufficient to displace at least about 80% of said first exchange liquid with said second exchange liquid, and
- (3) displacing said second exchange liquid with air.
- 3. The starch-based microcellular foam of claim 1, wherein said starch is selected from the group consisting of (a) unmodified starch, (b) starch that has been modified by hydrolysis or dextrinization, or has been modified to change the chemical structure of some of the D-glucopyranosyl units in the molecule by oxidation, esterification or etherification, (c) a mixture of unmodified starches, (d) a mixture of modified starches, and (e) a mixture of unmodified and modified starches.
- 4. A method of encapsulating a liquid or solid substance for later release, which comprises encapsulating said liquid or solid substance with a starch-based microcellular foam comprising a solid phase matrix of gelatinized starch having an amylose content of at least 40% or greater amylose, said solid phase matrix having therein a network of small open cells wherein the density of said solid phase matrix in the absence of said encapsulated liquid or solid substance is about 0.32 gm/cm.sup.3 or less, and the surface area is 50 m.sup.2 /gm or greater and wherein at least about 80% of said open cells of said matrix are about 10 .mu.m or smaller in size.
- 5. The method of claim 4 which further includes releasing said encapsulated liquid or solid substance by treating the foam with water.
