Claims
- 1. A process for hydrogenating aromatic compounds and mixtures thereof comprising:
- contacting an aromatic compound or mixture thereof with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst containing a stationary aqueous acid phase containing an acid soluble transition metal compound wherein the stationary aqueous acid phase and acid soluble transition metal compound are impregnated onto a hydrophilic, porous, solid support at temperatures in the range of from about 0.degree. C. to about 150.degree. C. for a time sufficient to at least partially hydrogenate said aromatic compound.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein the hydrogen pressure is in the range of from about 15 psig to about 1000 psig.
- 3. The process of claim 2 wherein the support material is selected from the group consisting of silica, clay, alumina, silica/alumina and titania.
- 4. The process of claim 2 wherein the aqueous acid is selected from the group consisting of CH.sub.3 COOH, CF.sub.3 COOH, H.sub.3 PO.sub.4, HF, HCl, H.sub.2 SO.sub.4, CH.sub.3 SO.sub.3 H, CF.sub.3 SO.sub.3 H, BF.sub.3 and mixtures thereof.
- 5. The process of claim 4 wherein the temperature is in the range of from about 25.degree. C. to about 75.degree. C.
- 6. The process of claim 5 wherein the aqueous acid is BF.sub.3.H.sub.2 O and the transition metal compound is PtCl.sub.2 (CH.sub.3 CN).sub.2.
