Claims
- 1. An apparatus for use in extracting information selectable by a user from raw data and for conveying the information to the user in a readily comprehendible format, the apparatus comprising:
a processor for executing instructions; and a memory device having thereon data structures and executables for execution by the processor, the data structures and executables comprising:
a compilation module adapted to automatically restructure the raw data into formatted data in which information within the formatted data is readily accessible and capable of being conveyed in a simple, readily understood manner to a user; and a navigation engine adapted to provide a user with a palette of informational categories representative of information which a user may direct the navigation engine to generate from the formatted data for display to the user.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the informational categories represent raw data and statistical derivations extracted from the raw data.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the compilation module further comprises at least one statistical calculation engine for generating the statistical derivations from the raw data and a formatting module for organizing the extracted statistical information into a formatted data matrix.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein the formatted data matrix includes the raw data and statistical derivations extracted from the raw data.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein the statistical derivations include quantiles and standardized information.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein the formatted data matrix includes composite data.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein the formatted data matrix includes correlation coefficients.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein the formatting module further comprises an indices generation module for generating indices to be included within the formatted data matrix for use by the navigation engine in navigating the formatted data.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the indices generation module is adapted to generate hierarchical indices for indexing the formatted data such that information within the formatted data is readily extractible by the navigation engine.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the navigation module is adapted to utilize indices within the formatted data to quickly respond to user requests to generate and display selected informational categories.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the navigation module further comprises a profiler module, the profiler module adapted to generate a peer group for comparison purposes according to characteristics of the peer group selected by a user, the navigation module further adapted to locate the selected informational categories for the peer group among the formatted data.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the profiler module is adapted to allow the user to alter a scope of the peer group for one or more selected informational categories and to alter the one or more selected informational categories for a given scope of the peer group.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising:
a user interface module adapted to provide a user with an option to select from among the palette of options of informational categories; a plurality of statistical calculation engines; and a selection module for automatically selecting a suitable statistical calculation engine for generating information in an informational category selected by the user according to the nature of the data to be represented.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a graphical depiction generation module adapted to depict one or more informational categories selected by a user in any one of a plurality of different graphical depiction types selectable by a user.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 15, wherein the graphical depiction generation module is adapted to automatically select an appropriate manner of formatting a graphical depiction according to the graphical depiction type selected by the user and the nature of information within the formatted data that is to be depicted.
- 17. The apparatus of claim 15, wherein the graphical depiction generation module ii depicts information within the formatted data in a simple, graphical manner illustrating relationships between the data in a manner readily understandable by an unindoctrinated user.
- 18. The apparatus of claim 15, wherein the graphical depiction generation module comprises a data translation module adapted to translate data having more than three variables into a three-dimensional graphical depiction.
- 19. The apparatus of claim 18, further comprising an error removal module for removing errors from the data in order to translate the data having more than three variables into a three-dimensional graphical depiction.
- 20. A computer readable medium having thereon data structures and executables for executing the data structures, the data structures and executables comprising:
a compilation module adapted to automatically restructure the raw data into formatted data in which information within the formatted data is readily accessible and capable of being conveyed in a simple, readily understood manner to a user; and a navigation engine adapted to provide a user with a palette of informational categories representative of information which a user may direct the navigation engine to generate from the formatted data for display to the user.
- 21. The computer readable medium of claim 20, wherein the compilation module further comprises one or more statistical calculation engines for extracting statistical information from the raw data and a formatting module for expanding the raw data into a matrix of formatted data including statistical composites generated by the statistical calculation engine.
- 22. The computer readable medium of claim 20, wherein the compilation module further comprises an indexing module for hierarchically indexing the formatted data with indices, the navigation module utilizing the indices to quickly respond to user requests to generate and display selected informational categories and to modify on-the-fly the traits of a subject peer group for which a selected informational category is generated.
- 23. The computer readable medium of claim 20, further comprising:
a user interface module adapted to provide a user with an option to select from among the palette of options of informational categories; a plurality of statistical calculation engines; and a selection module for automatically selecting a suitable statistical calculation engine for generating information in an informational category selected by the user according to the nature of the data to be represented.
- 24. The computer readable medium of claim 20, further comprising a graphical depiction generation module, the graphical depiction generation module capable of depicting a informational category selected by a user in any one of a plurality of different graphical depiction types selectable by a user.
- 25. The computer readable medium of claim 24, wherein the graphical depiction generation module is adapted to automatically select an appropriate manner of formatting a graphical depiction according to the graphical depiction type selected by the user and the nature of the information being depicted.
- 26. A method of extracting information selected by a user from raw data and displaying the information to the user in a readily comprehendible format, the method comprising:
providing a compilation module adapted to automatically restructure the unorganized information within the raw data into formatted data readily susceptible to being quickly accessed and conveyed in a simple, readily understood manner; and providing a navigation engine adapted to provide a user with a palette of options of informational categories that may be selected to be generated from the formatted data and displayed to the user; receiving the raw data from an input source; providing a user with a selection of informational categories that the navigation engine can extract from the formatted data; receiving user input of a selected informational category to be extracted from the formatted data; presenting to a user an option to select from among a plurality of descriptive categories to form a peer group for which to extract the selected informational category; and displaying for the user the information representative of the selected informational category for the selected peer group.
- 27. The method of claim 26, further comprising responding to the user input of a selected informational category by automatically selecting from among a plurality of statistical calculation engines the statistical calculation engine which will best generate the information representative of the selected descriptive category for the selected peer group.
- 28. The method of claim 26, further comprising presenting the user with an option to alter the peer group for which the information representative of the one or more selected informational categories is to be generated.
- 29. The method of claim 26, further comprising extracting a statistical composite profile according to the selected peer group for one or more of the informational categories.
- 30. The method of claim 26, further comprising presenting the user with an option to select from among different informational categories for which to extract information from the statistical composite profile.
- 31. The method of claim 26, further comprising presenting the user with a list of graphical display options including displaying the comparative statistical data for the selected peer group in any one of a plurality of selected graphical depiction schemes.
- 32. The method of claim 31, wherein displaying for the user the information representative of the selected descriptive category for the selected peer group comprises presenting to the user a graphical depiction of the comparative statistical data, including automatically selecting a manner of formatting the graphical depiction.
