Claims
- 1. A status/condition indicating arrangement for use in an electro-optical system having components, including a photodetector and a decoder, for reading indicia having parts of differing light reflectivity, comprising:
- a) a scanner interface for interfacing with an electro-optical scanner operative for scanning an indicium to be read;
- b) a status/condition interface for interfacing with the photodetector and the decoder whose status/condition is to be monitored;
- c) a memory for storing threshold information about the photodetector and the decoder;
- d) a system processor operatively connected to the interfaces and the memory, for generating updated information about the photodetector and the decoder from the status/condition interface during scanning, for retrieving the stored threshold information, for comparing the updated information with the retrieved threshold information, and for generating an output indicating signal upon such comparison; and
- e) an indicator responsive to the output indicating signal, for signaling to a user the status/condition of the photodetector and the decoder.
- 2. The arrangement of claim 1, wherein the scanner interface is operatively connected to an optical scan element in the scanner.
- 3. The arrangement of claim 1, wherein the memory is a discrete chip located away from the processor.
- 4. The arrangement of claim 1,wherein the indicator is a visual display.
- 5. The arrangement of claim 1, wherein the indicator is an audio generator.
- 6. The arrangement of claim 5, wherein the audio generator includes a synthesizer and a speaker to produce synthesized sounds.
- 7. A status/condition indicating method for use in an electro-optical system having components, including a photodetector and a decoder, for reading indicia having parts of differing light reflectivity, comprising the steps of:
- a) interfacing a scanner interface with an electro-optical scanner operative for scanning an indicium to be read;
- b) interfacing a status/condition interface with the photodetector and the decoder whose status/condition is to be monitored;
- c) storing in a memory threshold information about the photodetector and the decoder;
- d) operatively connecting a processor to the interfaces and the memory, generating updated information about the photodetector and the decoder from the status/condition interface during scanning, retrieving the stored threshold information, comparing the updated information with the retrieved threshold information, and generating an output indicating signal upon such comparison; and
- e) signaling in response to the output indicating signal, to a user the status/condition for the photodetector and the decoder.
- 8. The method of claim 7, wherein step (a) is performed by operatively connecting the scanner interface to an optical scan element in the scanner.
- 9. The method of claim 7, wherein the signaling step is performed by a visual display.
- 10. The method of claim 7, wherein the signaling step is performed by a sound generator.
