Claims
- 1. A radially expandable seal element for bridging an annular clearance separating the seal element from a confining wall, comprising:a cylindrical cage having a side wall formed by a plurality of structural, coaxial, helically parallel coils having ends and side edges; and elastomeric means for sealing the side edges of the coils to provide pressure containment across the cage side wall.
- 2. The seal element as set forth in claim 1 comprising:end sleeves joining the coil ends of the cage.
- 3. A radially expandable seal element for bridging an annular clearance separating the seal element from a confining wall, comprising:inner and outer cylindrical cages, each cage having a side wall formed by a plurality of structural, coaxial, helically parallel coils having ends and side edges, and elastomeric means between the cages for sealing the side edges of the coils to provide pressure containment across the cage side wall.
- 4. The seal element as set forth in claim 3 wherein:the coils of one cage have a helix screw direction opposed to the helix screw direction of the other coil.
