Claims
- 1. A steer-by-wire system for a vehicle having a road wheel capable of turning and a steering device capable of receiving a steering input from and transmitting a steering feedback to a driver of the vehicle, comprising:
a steering subsystem including a steering sensor coupled to the steering device and adapted to sense steering factors of the steering input, and a steering actuator coupled to the steering device and adapted to receive a steering feedback signal and to generate the steering feedback to the driver; a turning subsystem including a turning actuator coupled to the road wheel and adapted to receive a turning control signal and to adjust a turning angle of the road wheel, and a turning sensor coupled to the turning actuator and adapted to sense turning factors of the turning actuator; and a controller subsystem connected to said steering sensor and to said turning sensor, and adapted to produce the turning control signal based on the steering factors thereby controlling the turning angle of the road wheel and to produce the steering feedback signal based on the steering factors and the turning factors thereby controlling the steering feedback of the steering device.
- 2. A steer-by-wire system for a vehicle of claim 1, wherein said steering actuator includes an electric motor to generate the steering feedback.
- 3. A steer-by-wire system for a vehicle of claim 1, wherein said steering actuator includes a MR device to generate the steering feedback.
- 4. A steer-by-wire system for a vehicle of claim 1, wherein steering factors include steering angle and steering torque.
- 5. A steer-by-wire system for a vehicle of claim 1, wherein said turning factors include a current draw of said turning actuator.
- 6. A steer-by-wire system for a vehicle of claim 5, wherein said turning factors also include a temperature of said turning actuator.
- 7. A steer-by-wire system for a vehicle of claim 1, further including a feedback selector adapted to receive a feedback selection from the driver, wherein said controller subsystem is further coupled to said feedback selector and is further adapted to produce the steering feedback signal based also on the feedback selection.
- 8. A steer-by-wire system for a vehicle of claim 1, further including a vehicle sensor adapted to sense vehicle factors, wherein said controller subsystem is further coupled to the vehicle sensor and is further adapted to produce the turning control signal based also on the vehicle factors.
- 9. A steer-by-wire system for a vehicle of claim 8, wherein said vehicle factors include vehicle speed, vehicle lateral acceleration and vehicle yaw rate.
- 10. A steer-by-wire system for a vehicle of claim 9, wherein said vehicle factors also include ignition mode.
- 11. A steer-by-wire system for a vehicle of claim 10, wherein said vehicle factors also include vehicle roll and vehicle pitch.
- 12. In a steer-by-wire system for a vehicle having a road wheel capable of turning, a turning actuator capable of adjusting the turning angle of the road wheel, and a steering device capable of receiving a steering input from a driver of the vehicle, a method of transmitting steering feedback to the driver comprising:
providing a steering actuator and coupling the steering actuator to the steering device; sensing steering factors of the steering input and determining the steering intent of the driver; sensing vehicle factors of the vehicle, sensing turning factors of the turning actuator, and determining the current dynamic status of the vehicle; comparing the steering intent and the current dynamic status; producing a turning control signal for the turning actuator to control the turning angle of the road wheel; and producing a steering feedback signal for the steering actuator to control the steering feedback of the steering device.
- 13. In a steer-by-wire system for a vehicle of claim 12, wherein said sensing steering factors includes sensing steering angle and steering torque.
- 14. In a steer-by-wire system for a vehicle of claim 12, wherein said sensing vehicle factors include sensing vehicle speed, vehicle lateral acceleration, and vehicle yaw rate.
- 15. In a steer-by-wire system for a vehicle of claim 14, wherein said sensing vehicle factors further includes sensing ignition mode.
- 16. In a steer-by-wire system for a vehicle of claim 15, wherein said sensing vehicle factors further include sensing vehicle roll and vehicle pitch.
- 17. In a steer-by-wire system for a vehicle of claim 12, wherein said sensing turning factors includes sensing a current draw of the turning actuator.
- 18. In a steer-by-wire system for a vehicle of claim 17, wherein said sensing turning factors further includes sensing a temperature of the turning actuator.
