Claims
- 1. In a drilling apparatus of the type comprising a housing, a proximal seal, a distal seal, a fluid chamber defined by an interior of the housing between the proximal seal and the distal seal, the fluid chamber containing a lubricating fluid having a fluid chamber pressure, a pressure compensation system for compensating for the effects of an ambient pressure exerted on an exterior of the apparatus, the pressure compensation system comprising:(a) a pressure port in the housing so that the ambient pressure can be communicated to the fluid chamber; and (b) a supplementary pressure source for exerting a supplementary pressure on the lubricating fluid contained in the fluid chamber so that the fluid chamber pressure is maintained higher than the ambient pressure.
- 2. The system as claimed in claim 1 wherein the pressure compensation system is further comprised of a balancing piston assembly, wherein the balancing piston assembly is comprised of a piston chamber defined by the interior of the housing and a movable piston contained within the piston chamber which separates the piston chamber into a fluid chamber side and a balancing side, wherein the fluid chamber side is connected with the fluid chamber, wherein the pressure port communicates with the balancing side of the piston chamber to communicate the ambient pressure to the fluid chamber, and wherein the supplementary pressure source acts on the piston from the balancing side of the piston chamber to communicate the supplementary pressure to the fluid chamber.
- 3. The system as claimed in claim 2 wherein the supplementary pressure source is comprised of a biasing device which exerts the supplementary pressure on the piston.
- 4. The system as claimed in claim 3 wherein the biasing device is comprised of a spring which is contained in the balancing side of the piston chamber.
- 5. The system as claimed in claim 1 wherein the pressure compensating system is further comprised of a lubricating fluid regulating system for regulating the fluid chamber pressure.
- 6. The system as claimed in claim 5 wherein the lubricating fluid regulating system is comprised of a relief valve connected with the fluid chamber for permitting the discharge of lubricating fluid from the fluid chamber when the fluid chamber pressure exceeds a relief valve pressure value.
- 7. The system as claimed in claim 6 wherein the lubricating fluid regulating system is farther comprised of a charging valve connected with the fluid chamber for permitting the introduction of lubricating fluid into the fluid chamber.
- 8. The system as claimed in claim 6 wherein the relief valve and the supplementary pressure source are selected so that the relief valve pressure value is greater than the supplementary pressure.
