Claims
- 1. A decorative strip for attachment to a curved wheel comprising:
a substrate having an elongate shape and a decorative image at least one side; and a transparent coat attached to completely covering said substrate and made of a flexible material, said coat and said substrate cooperating to form a flexible assembly that can be attached to said curved wheel.
- 2. The strip of claim 1 further comprising an adhesive layer on said substrate for attachment of said strip to said curved surface.
- 3. The strip of claim 1 wherein said substrate is made of vinyl.
- 4. The strip of claim 1 wherein said coat is made of a polyurethane resin.
- 5. The strip of claim 4 wherein said polyurethane resin has a hardness between 70 shore D and 60 shore A.
- 6. The strip of claim 1 further comprising a support with said substrate being releasably mounted on said support.
- 7. A steering wheel decorative strip comprising:
a laminate formed of a substrate and a first and a second surface with an adhesive attached to said first surface and a coat made of a flexible material on said second surface, said coat having a curved cross-section so that it is considerably thicker along the center of the laminate then along its edges, said laminate being flexible and being sized and shaped to fit on the ring of a steering wheel.
- 8. The strip of claim 7 wherein said substrate is made of vinyl.
- 9. The strip of claim 7 wherein said coat is made of polyurethane.
- 10. The strip of claim 7 wherein said coat is made of a material having a hardness between 60 and 70 shore.
- 11. The strip of claim 7 wherein coat is formed of a plurality of adjacent longitudinal segments.
- 12. The strip of claim 7 further comprising a support, said laminate being releasably attached to said support by said adhesive.
- 13. A method of making a decorative strip for a steering wheel ring having one of several diameters, said method comprising:
depositing on a support a substrate having a decorative design on one surface; depositing on said substrate a soft polyurethane resin; allowing said polyurethane resin to spread laterally to form a coat on said substrate; and curing said resin to form a laminate.
- 14. The method of claim 13 wherein said resin is cured at room temperature.
- 15. The method of claim 13 wherein said resin is cured at between 70 and 100 degrees F.
- 16. The method of claim 13 further comprising forming said resin by mixing two components A and B, wherein said component A consists of an aliphatic isocyanate and polyether polyol.
- 17. The method of claim 16 wherein said component A is an isocynate terminated prepolymer,
- 18. The method of claim 16 wherein said compound B consists of polyether polyols and a catalyst.
- 19. The method of claim 16 wherein said resin is transparent.
- 20. The method of claim 16 wherein said resin has a viscosity between 1000 and 4000 cps.
- 21. The method of claim 16 wherein said resin has a hardness when cured of between 70 shore A and 60 shore D.
- 22. The method of claim 16 further comprising an adhesive on said substrate.
- 23. The method of claim 16 wherein several laminates are formed, each laminate defining a decorative strip section.
- 24. The method of claim 99 further comprising forming said sections with lateral edges, said lateral edges defining complementary profiles.
- 25. The method of claim 23 further comprising forming said sections with serrated lateral edges.
- 26. A decorative strip for mounting on a vehicular steering wheel and the like, said strip comprising:
a plurality of sections, each section including a laminate formed of a substrate and a first and a second surface with an adhesive attached to said first surface and a coat made of a flexible material on said second surface, said laminate being flexible; wherein said sections can be fit together to form a unitary strip that is sized and shaped to fit on the ring of a steering wheel.
- 27. The strip of claim 26 wherein each said section includes at least one lateral edge having a serrated profile, said sections fitting together in an abutting relationship along said lateral edges.
- 28. The strip of claim 27 wherein two sections each include a linear lateral edge on one side and said and a serrated lateral edge on the other side.
- 29. The strip of claim 27 wherein said sections having complementary profiles.
- 30. The strip of claim 27 wherein said substrate has a decorative image and said coat is made from a transparent material, with said decorative image being visible through said coat.
- 31. A steering wheel decorative strip comprising:
a laminate formed of a substrate with a first and a second surface with an adhesive attached to said first surface and a decorative image on said second surface, said laminate further including a coat made of a flexible transparent material attached to said second surface, said coat having a curved cross-section so that it is considerably thicker along the center of the laminate then along its edges, with said image being visible through said coat, said laminate being flexible and being sized and shaped to fit on the ring of a steering wheel.
