The present invention relates to a steering wheel base for gaming applications according to claim 1, a full system according to claim 13 comprising a steering wheel and a steering wheel base according to the invention and a method of connecting a steering wheel to a steering wheel base according to the invention according to claim 14.
A steering wheel base is used to simulate steering behavior for gaming applications, like automobile race simulations or similar applications. Therefor it comprises a steering wheel shaft that is connectable to a steering wheel, wherein the steering wheel base is configured to direct simulated forces to the steering wheel shaft and thus to the steering wheel and, at the same time, to read the steering movement of the steering wheel and thus of the steering wheel shaft and to transmit this to the gaming application. In addition the wheel base is connected to the electronics of the steering wheel. To attach the steering wheel to the wheel base, a quick coupling system is used with elements on the side of the wheel base and the steering wheel.
A steering wheel base with such a quick coupling system is known from European Publication No. EP 4 041 615 A. It ensures that the steering wheel is attachable to the steering wheel base only in the correct orientation. This improves the simplicity and properity of the connection between the steering wheel base and the steering wheel. However, the versatility of using such a steering wheel base is limited.
It is therefore the object of the present invention to provide a steering wheel base with improved versatility of use.
A solution of the object is provided with a steering wheel base according to one embodiment of the invention. A steering wheel base for gaming applications comprises a steering wheel shaft, an attachment component, which is fixed to the steering wheel shaft to rotate with the steering wheel shaft and that is configured such that the steering wheel base is directly electrically connectable to electronics of a steering wheel via an electric plug-in contact of the attachment component, and a system comprising a first mechanical quick coupling element and a second mechanical quick coupling element, wherein the first mechanical quick coupling element and the second mechanical quick coupling element are interchangeably fixable to the attachment component into a fixed position and are adapted for different steering wheel side coupling elements of the steering wheel to provide mechanical quick coupling between the steering wheel base and the steering wheel.
The steering wheel base makes it possible that steering wheels with different wheel side coupling elements can be coupled to the steering wheel base in an advantageous and simple way. This improves the versatility of the usability of the steering wheel base.
Further, the port to the electronics of the steering wheel is similar for several steering wheels. Accordingly, it is advantageous that the electric plug-in contact of the steering wheel base is part of the attachment component, which is not interchangeably, as the user does not have to disconnect any internal electronic connections when adapting the steering wheel base for a different steering wheel. The first mechanical quick coupling element and the second mechanical quick coupling element are purely mechanical components that can also be interchanged by amateur users in a quick and efficient way.
Advantageous embodiments of the present invention are the subject of the dependent claims.
According to a particularly preferred embodiment, the attachment component comprises a first engagement element and the first mechanical quick coupling element and the second mechanical quick coupling element each comprise a second engagement element, wherein the first mechanical quick coupling element and the second mechanical quick coupling element are only fixable to the attachment component in the fixed position, when the first engagement element engages the second engagement element. This ensures the orientation of the first mechanical quick coupling element and the second mechanical quick coupling element with respect to the steering wheel base in the fixed position. Preferably, the first engagement element is formed as a projection and the second engagement element is formed as a groove or vice versa. In this way the engagement elements can be designed in a simple way.
According to a preferred embodiment, the attachment component comprises a protrusion, which extents in line with an axial direction of the steering wheel shaft, wherein the electric plug-in contact is arranged at an end of the protrusion distant to the steering wheel shaft and a contact closure direction of the electric plug-in contact is in line with the axial direction of the steering wheel shaft. This means that the electric plug-in contact projects towards the steering wheel and can thus be easily connected to the steering wheel's electronics.
In a particularly preferred embodiment, the first mechanical quick coupling element and the second mechanical quick coupling element each comprise a sleeve part forming a cavity having two opposite openings, a first opening and a second opening, wherein the protrusion of the attachment component is configured such that the protrusion is insertable into the cavity through the first opening and wherein the electric plug-in contact is accessible from the second opening to electrically connect the electronics of the steering wheel to the electric plug-in contact, wherein preferably the cavities of the respective mechanical quick coupling element are shaped differently. This allows a very compact design of the steering wheel base.
According to a preferred embodiment, the sleeve part of the first mechanical quick coupling element and/or the second mechanical quick coupling element is formed with a chamfer at its second opening. This facilitates the coupling of the steering wheel to the steering wheel base.
In another preferred embodiment, the sleeve part of the first mechanical quick coupling element and/or the second mechanical quick coupling element is formed with a contour widening from the first opening in axial direction. This further facilitates the coupling of the steering wheel to the steering wheel base.
In a preferred embodiment, a plane of the second opening is perpendicular to the closure direction of the electric plug-in contact, wherein the electric plug-in contact is a maximum of 5 cm from the plane of the second opening. This facilitates the connection of the electric plug-in contact and the electronics of the steering wheel.
In another preferred embodiment, the outer periphery of a portion of the protrusion, preferably of the electric plug-in contact, is shaped such that the first mechanical quick coupling element and/or the second mechanical quick coupling element can be inserted onto the protrusion only in a specific orientation. This ensures that the first mechanical quick coupling element and/or the second mechanical quick coupling element are fixed to the attachment component in the right orientation.
According to a preferred embodiment, the protrusion comprises at least one snap-fitting element, preferably two at opposite positions, at its sheath surface, which is configured to engage with a counterpart on the sleeve part of the first mechanical quick coupling element and/or the second mechanical quick coupling element. This allows the first mechanical quick coupling element and/or the second mechanical quick coupling element to be fixed to the attachment component in a simple and non-laborious way. Preferably, the counter part of the sleeve part is configured as an opening accessible from the outside of the sleeve part. This facilitates the release of the snap-fitting connection between the at least one snap-fitting element and the counterpart.
According to another preferred embodiment, the protrusion comprises a threaded hole in its sheet at its sheath surface, which is configured such that a fastener is screwable into the threaded hole through an opening leading into the cavity in an outer wall of the first mechanical quick coupling element and/or the second mechanical quick coupling element to secure the first mechanical quick coupling element and/or the second mechanical quick coupling element in the fixed position in a specific orientation. This also allows the first mechanical quick coupling element and/or the second mechanical quick coupling element to be fixed to the attachment component in a simple and non-laborious way.
In particularly preferred embodiment, the first mechanical quick coupling element and the second mechanical quick coupling element each comprise coupling engagement elements on an outside of the sleeve part that serve to mechanically quick couple the steering wheel side coupling elements of the steering wheel to the steering wheel base. Preferably, the coupling engagement elements are formed as indentations or slots into which steering wheel side counterparts of the steering wheel side coupling elements can engage to mechanically, especially rotationally, fix the steering wheel to the steering wheel shaft of the steering wheel base.
In another preferred embodiment, the sleeve part of the respective first mechanical quick coupling element and second mechanical quick coupling element is configured such that the steering wheel side coupling element of the steering wheel is only couplable to the steering wheel base in a defined orientation. This simplifies the correct fixation of the steering wheel to the Steering wheel base. Preferably, an outer contour of the sleeve part of the respective first mechanical quick coupling element and/or second mechanical quick coupling element is formed in such a way, that the steering wheel side coupling element of the steering wheel is only couplable to the steering wheel base in a defined orientation, wherein the outer contour is preferably axis symmetrical to the defined orientation and is not point-symmetric. In another preferred embodiment, the sleeve part of the respective first mechanical quick coupling element and/or second mechanical quick coupling element comprises a groove on its outer surface that extends parallel to the axial direction of the steering wheel shaft, wherein an inside of the steering wheel side coupling element of the steering wheel comprises a tongue element that engages with the groove in such a way that the steering wheel is only couplable to the steering wheel in the defined orientation.
According to another preferred embodiment, the attachment component comprises a first flange disc, which preferably is arranged symmetrically around and at an end of the protrusion, preferably distant to the electric plug-in contact, and the first mechanical quick coupling element and the second mechanical quick coupling element each comprise a second flange disc, which is preferably arranged symmetrically around and at an end of the sleeve part of the first mechanical quick coupling element and the second mechanical quick coupling element, preferably at the first opening, wherein the first flange disc and second flange disc are configured such that the two flange discs are connectable by screws, wherein preferably the first flange disc comprises threaded holes and the second flange disc comprises corresponding holes such that the second flange disc is fixable to the first flange disc by screws that are inserted through the corresponding holes and screwed into the threaded holes.
In another particularly preferred embodiment, the system comprises at least one other mechanical quick coupling element. This can additionally increase the variability with regard to the couplable steering wheels.
