Claims
- 1. A bed assembly having a bed capable of being shifted between an upper stored position and a lower position for sleeping, comprising:
a frame for supporting a mattress capable of being shifted between the upper stored and lower positions, said frame having a first half and a second half; the second half of said frame being mounted to first and second rigid supports by two spaced vertically extending guides, said guides having respective stops at said lower position for limiting downward movement of the second half of said frame; a pair of swing arms pivotally mounted to third and fourth rigid supports adjacent the upper stored position of said frame, with said arms engaging linkages coupled to the frame at the first half of said frame; said swing arms including arrangements permitting movement of said linkages along said swing arms from said upper stored position to said lower position preventing further downward movement of said linkages, said swing arms rotating as one edge of said bed is lowered from said upper stored position toward said lower position; resilient counterbalancing arrangements which are compressed when said mattress and frame are shifted downward, and which apply upward force to assist in restoring said mattress and frame to the upper stored position.
- 2. An assembly as defined in claim 1 wherein said assembly is mounted in a recreational vehicle.
- 3. An assembly as defined in claim 1 wherein said counterbalancing arrangements include four compressed gas cylinders, with each cylinder having one end secured to said frame near a corner thereof, and the other end thereof pivotally secured to a fixed support.
- 4. An assembly as defined in claim 1 wherein said linkages each include a pair of rollers, and wherein said swing arms include longitudinally extending guides trapping said rollers within the guides for substantially vertical movement as said bed is raised or lowered.
- 5. An assembly as defined in claim 1 wherein said resilient counterbalancing arrangements include four springs.
- 6. A bed assembly involving shifting a bed between an upper stored position and a lower position for sleeping, comprising:
a frame for supporting a mattress capable of being shifted between the upper stored and lowered position; a first pair of guides connected to the frame adjacent first and second corners of the frame for allowing said first and second corners to be raised and lowered along generally vertical paths defined by the first paid of guides; a second pair of guides connected to the frame adjacent third and fourth corners of the frame for allowing said third and fourth corners to be raised and lowered along paths defined by the second pair of guides; wherein the second pair of guides are pivoting guides, the pivoting guides being fixed at upper ends thereof and being free to rotate within at least limited arcs at said lower ends.
- 7. The bed assembly of claim 6 further comprising:
a counterforce arrangement which stores energy when said mattress and frame are shifted downward, and which releases energy when said mattress is shifted upward to assist in restoring said mattress and frame to the upper stored position.
- 8. The bed assembly of claim 7 wherein said counterforce arrangement comprises a plurality of gas cylinders.
- 9. The bed assembly of claim 6 wherein said guides comprise guide means.
- 10. The bed assembly of claim 9 wherein said guide means comprise tracks and captive rollers capable of rolling within said tracks.
- 11. The bed assembly of claim 6 wherein said guides include stops at lower ends thereof to limit downward movement of said frame.
