Claims
- 1. A computer implemented method of locating a machine-readable target data record stored on a direct access storage device (DASD), said DASD containing a portion of a logically ordered sequence of digital data stored on a backup sequential storage medium, the portion of the logically ordered sequence including:at least one data record; a record header preceding each data record, each data record and each record header having a beginning address in the direct access storage device; said method of locating the target data record comprising: reading a first record header at a first address to determine whether the first record header corresponds to a target data record; if the first record header does not correspond to the target data record, repeatedly advancing to succeeding record headers one record header at a time; and reading the succeeding record headers to find a record header corresponding to the target data record.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein if the target data record is not found before a last record header, signaling that the target data record has not been found.
- 3. A programmed product comprising signal-bearing media tangibly embodying a program of machine-readable instructions executable by a digital processing apparatus to perform a method for locating a desired machine-readable target data record stored on a direct access storage device (DASD), said DASD containing a logically ordered sequence of digital data including:at least one data record; a record header preceding each data record, each data record and each record header having a beginning address in the direct access storage device; said method of locating the target data record comprising: reading a first record header at a first address to determine whether the first record header corresponds to a target data record; if the first record header does not correspond to the target data record, repeatedly advancing to succeeding record headers one record header at a time; and reading the succeeding record headers to find a record header corresponding to the target data record.
- 4. The product of claim 3, repeatedly advancing comprising repeatedly advancing a read head of the DASD.
- 5. The product of claim 3, the repeatedly advancing comprising repeatedly advancing a software pointer.
