Claims
- 1. A recloseable storage bag, comprising:
a first side having a bottom edge, left edge, right edge, top edge, inner surface, and outer surface; a second side having a bottom edge, left edge, right edge, top edge, inner surface, and outer surface, the bottom edges of the first and second sides being attached, the left edges of the first and second sides being attached, and the right edges of the first and second sides being attached; closure members being provided proximate the top edges of the first and second sides; and biasing rails attached to the first and second sides, each biasing rail having a relaxed, outwardly biased configuration, and a stressed, flat configuration, the closure members having a closure force, the biasing rails having an opening force, the closure force being greater than the opening force, each biasing rail including a plurality of hinged segments.
- 2. The recloseable storage bag of claim 1, wherein the biasing rails are attached to the first and second sides as both traverse a semi-circular path.
- 3. The recloseable storage bag of claim 1, wherein each of the hinged segments is substantially trapezoidal in linear cross-section.
- 4. The recloseable storage bag of claim 1, further including an elastic band attached to the biasing rails, the elastic band having a stressed, elongated configuration when the bag is closed, the band having a relaxed, shortened configuration when the bag is open.
- 5. The recloseable storage bag of claim 1, wherein the biasing rails are attached to the outer surface of the first and second sides.
- 6. The recloseable storage bag of claim 1, wherein the biasing rails are attached to the inner surfaces of the first and second sides.
- 7. The recloseable storage bag of claim 1, wherein each of the biasing strips is positionable in one of first and second modes, each of the hinged segments being linearly aligned when the biasing strip is in the first mode, each of the hinged segments being arcuately aligned when the biasing strip is in the second mode.
- 8. The recloseable storage bag of claim 1, wherein the closure members are mating male and female zipper strips.
- 9. The recloseable storage bag of claim 8, wherein the closure members further include a sliding member adapted to facilitate closing and opening of the male and female zipper strips.
- 10. A method of forming a recloseable storage bag, comprising the steps of:
traversing a sheet of thermoplastic film around a cylinder; simultaneously traversing a biasing rail around the cylinder in engagement with the sheet of thermoplastic film, the biasing rail including a plurality of hinged segments; attaching each hinge segment to the sheet of thermoplastic film; and manipulating the sheet of thermoplastic film into a bag having an openable top.
- 11. The method of forming a recloseable storage bag of claim 10, further including the step of attaching an elastic band to each of the biasing rails.
- 12. A recloseable storage bag, comprising:
a first side having a bottom edge, left edge, right edge, top edge, inner surface, and outer surface; a second side having a bottom edge, left edge, right edge, top edge, inner surface, and outer surface, the bottom edges of the first and second sides being attached, the left edges of the first and second sides being attached, and the right edges of the first and second sides being attached; closure members being provided proximate the top edges of the first and second sides; biasing rails provided on the first and second sides, each biasing rail having a relaxed, outwardly biased configuration, and a stressed, flat configuration, the closure members having a closure force, the biasing rails having an opening force, the closure force being greater than the opening force, each biasing rail being deformed on at least one side to have the outwardly biased configuration.
- 13. The recloseable storage bag of claim 12, wherein the at least one side is deformed using a sharp edge.
- 14. The recloseable storage bag of claim 13, wherein the sharp edge is mounted to an ultrasonic vibrator.
- 15. The recloseable storage bag of claim 14, wherein the at least one side of the biasing rail is deformed to have a plurality of grooves formed in the at least one side.
- 16. The recloseable storage bag of claim 15, wherein the plurality of grooves are formed using a toothed gear wheel.
- 17. The recloseable storage bag of claim 14, wherein each biasing rail is deformed so as to have, in the relaxed configuration, a lower portion and an upper portion, the lower portion being substantially parallel to the first and second sides, the upper portion extending at an angle from the lower portion, the upper portion being angled away from the lower portion, the upper portion being parallel to the lower portion when the biasing rail is in the stressed configuration.
- 18. The recloseable storage bag of claim 16, wherein each biasing rail includes a linear groove about which the biasing rails are adapted to bend when moving from the relaxed configuration to the stressed configuration.
- 19. A recloseable storage bag, comprising:
a first side having a bottom edge, left edge, right edge, top edge, inner surface, and outer surface; a second side having a bottom edge, left edge, right edge, top edge, inner surface, and outer surface, the bottom edges of the first and second sides being attached, the left edges of the first and second sides being attached, and the right edges of the first and second sides being attached; closure members being provided proximate the top edges of the first and second sides; biasing rails attached to the first and second sides, each biasing rail having a relaxed, outwardly biased configuration, and a stressed, flat configuration, the closure members having a closure force, the biasing rails having an opening force, the closure force being greater than the opening force, each biasing rail being elastic.
- 20. The recloseable storage bag of claim 19, wherein each biasing rail is a rubber band.
- 21. The recloseable storage bag of claim 19, wherein each biasing rail includes first and second layers secured together, the first layer being stretched to a greater tension than the second layer prior to being secured together.
- 22. The recloseable storage bag of claim 21, wherein the first and second layers include interlocking male and female profiles.
- 23. The recloseable storage bag of claim 22, wherein the first and second layers wherein the first layer includes the male profile, and wherein the second layer includes the female profile.
- 24. A recloseable storage bag, comprising:
a first side having a bottom edge, left edge, right edge, top edge, inner surface, and outer surface; a second side having a bottom edge, left edge, right edge, top edge, inner surface, and outer surface, the bottom edges of the first and second sides being attached, the left edges of the first and second sides being attached, and the right edges of the first and second sides being attached; closure members being provided proximate the top edges of the first and second sides; biasing rails attached to the first and second sides, each biasing rail having a relaxed, outwardly biased configuration, and a stressed, flat configuration, the closure members having a closure force, the biasing rails having an opening force, the closure force being greater than the opening force, each biasing rail having a polarity, the polarities of the biasing rails being the same.
- 25. The recloseable storage bag of claim 24, wherein each of the biasing rails is an electret.
- 26. The recloseable storage bag of claim 24, wherein each of the biasing rails is a magnet.
- 27. The recloseable storage bag of claim 24, wherein each of the biasing rails is part of one of the closure members.
- 28. A recloseable storage bag, comprising:
a first side having a bottom edge, left edge, right edge, top edge, inner surface, and outer surface; a second side having a bottom edge, left edge, right edge, top edge, inner surface, and outer surface, the bottom edges of the first and second sides being attached, the left edges of the first and second sides being attached, and the right edges of the first and second sides being attached; closure members being provided proximate the top edges of the first and second sides; biasing rails attached to the first and second sides, each biasing rail having a relaxed outwardly biased configuration, and a stressed, flat configuration, the closure members having a closure force, the biasing rails having an opening force, the closure force being greater than the opening force, each biasing rail including first and second layers of different lengths.
- 29. The recloseable storage bag of claim 28, wherein the first layer has a different coefficient of thermal expansion than the second layer, and wherein the first and second layers have the same length and are bonded together when heated, and wherein the first and second layers contract to different extents when cooled.
- 30. The recloseable storage bag of claim 29, wherein the first and second layers are integrally extruded together, and wherein the first layer is compressed and lengthened relative to the other of the first and second layers.
- 31. The recloseable storage bag of claim 30, wherein the first layer is compressed and lengthened using a pair of nip rollers.
- 32. A recloseable storage bag, comprising:
a first side having a bottom edge, left edge, right edge, top edge, inner surface, and outer surface; a second side having a bottom edge, left edge, right edge, top edge, inner surface, and outer surface, the bottom edges of the first and second sides being attached, the left edges of the first and second sides being attached, and the right edges of the first and second sides being attached; and closure members being provided proximate the top edges of the first and second sides, the closure members being biased into arcuate shapes.
- 33. The recloseable storage bag of claim 32, wherein the closure members are biased into arcuate shapes by extruding the closure members from first and second polymers having different densities.
- 34. The recloseable storage bag of claim 33, wherein the first and second polymers are high and low density polyethylene.
- 35. The recloseable storage bag of claim 33, wherein one of the polymers includes a filler material.
- 36. The recloseable storage bag of claim 33, wherein one of the polymers includes air-filled pockets.
- 37. The recloseable storage bag of claim 32, wherein the closure member is formed into the arcuate shape by deforming one side of the closure member.
- 38. The recloseable storage bag of claim 37, wherein the one side is deformed by drawing the closure member across a sharp edge.
- 39. The recloseable storage bag of claim 38, wherein the sharp edge is ultrasonically vibrated.
- 40. A recloseable storage bag, comprising:
a first side having a bottom edge, left edge, right edge, top edge, inner surface, and outer surface; a second side having a bottom edge, left edge, right edge, top edge, inner surface, and outer surface, the bottom edges of the first and second sides being attached, the left edges of the first and second sides being attached, and the right edges of the first and second sides being attached; closure members provided proximate the top edges of the first and second side inner surfaces; and inversion members provided proximate the top edges of the first and second side outer surfaces.
- 41. The recloseable storage bag of claim 40, wherein the inversion members include interlocking male and female profiles on the outer surface of each of the first and second sides.
- 42. A recloseable storage bag, comprising:
a pouch having an access way to an interior storage area of the pouch; a closure device proximate to the access way, the closure device being moveable between an engaged position closing the access way and a disengaged position opening the access way; means for biasing the access way into an open configuration when the closure device is disengaged, the means for biasing including a rail having a plurality of hinged segments.
- 43. The recloseable storage bag of claim 42, wherein the rail is bonded to the pouch while both the rail and the pouch are positioned in an arcuate configuration.
- 44. The recloseable storage bag of claim 42, wherein the means for biasing further includes an elastic band connected to the hinged segments.
- 45. The recloseable storage bag of claim 42, wherein the rail is adapted to be moved between first and second stable modes, the hinged segments being linearly aligned when the rail is in the first mode, the hinged segments being snapped into an arcuate configuration when in the second mode.
- 46. The recloseable storage bag of claim 42, wherein the pouch is manufactured from thermoplastic material.
- 47. The recloseable storage bag of claim 42, wherein the closure device includes mating male and female profile strips.
- 48. A recloseable storage bag, comprising:
a pouch having an access way to an interior storage area of the pouch; a closure device proximate to the access way, the closure device being moveable between an engaged position closing the access way and a disengaged position opening the access way; means for biasing the access way into an open configuration when the closure device is disengaged, the means for biasing including multiple layers.
- 49. The recloseable storage bag of claim 48, wherein the multiple layers include first and second layers of bonded plastic material, the first and second layers having different coefficients of thermal expansion.
- 50. The recloseable storage bag of claim 48, wherein the multiple layers include first and second layers of bonded plastic material, one of the layers being placed under tension prior to bonding to the other layer.
- 51. The recloseable storage bag of claim 48, wherein the multiple layers include a rail integrally extruded with the closure device, the rail being subsequently flattened and elongated.
- 52. The recloseable storage bag of claim 51, wherein the rail is flattened and elongated using a pair of nip rollers.
- 53. A recloseable storage bag, comprising:
a pouch having an access way to an interior storage area of the pouch; a closure device proximate to the access way, the closure device being moveable between engaged position closing the access way and a disengaged position opening the access way; means for biasing the access way into an open configuration when the closure device is disengaged, the means for biasing including rails having deformations therein, the deformations causing the rails to be biased apart.
- 54. The recloseable storage bag of claim 53, wherein each rail includes first and second sides, the deformations being formed in only one of the first and second sides.
- 55. The recloseable storage bag of claim 54, wherein the deformations include a plurality of lateral grooves formed by a tooth gear wheel rotatably engaging the rail.
- 56. The recloseable storage bag of claim 53, wherein each rail includes upper and lower sections, the upper section being closer to the access way than the lower sections, the upper sections being angularly deformed relative to the lower sections.
- 57. The recloseable storage bag of claim 53, wherein the closure device and the means of biasing are integrally formed together.
- 58. The recloseable storage bag of claim 53, wherein the pouch is formed of thermoplastic material.
- 59. A recloseable storage bag, comprising:
a pouch having an access way to an interior storage area of the pouch; a closure device proximate to the access way, the closure device being moveable between engaged position closing the access way and a disengaged position opening the access way; means for biasing the access way into an open configuration when the closure device is disengaged, the means for biasing including similar polarized elements.
- 60. The recloseable storage bag of claim 59, wherein the means for biasing includes first and second rails mounted in opposing relation on the pouch proximate the access way, the first and second rails having the same polarity.
- 61. The recloseable storage bag of claim 60, wherein the first and second rails are magnets.
- 62. The recloseable storage bag of claim 60, wherein the first and second rails are electrets.
- 63. A method of manufacturing a recloseable storage bag, comprising:
forming a rail and closure strip subassembly; connecting the rail and closure strip subassembly to a web of thermoplastic material; compressing the rail into an elongated form; manipulating the web and connected rail and closure strip subassembly into a bag having an opening with the rail and closure strip subassembly proximate the opening.
- 64. The method of claim 63, wherein the forming step is performed by intregrally coextruding the rail and closure strip together.
- 65. The method of claim 63, wherein the compressing step is performed using a pair of nip rollers.
- 66. The method of claim 63, wherein the manipulating step is performed through a series of folding and heat sealing steps.
- 67. A method of manufacturing a recloseable storage bag, comprising:
forming rail of plastic material having first and second opposed sides; deforming one of the first and second sides so as to have a bow therein; attaching the rail to a web of thermoplastic material; and manipulating the web of thermoplastic material into a bag having a mouth, the bow of the rail being positioned so as to bias the mouth into an open configuration.
- 68. The method of claim 67, wherein the deforming step involves creating a series of grooves in the one side of the rail.
- 69. The method of claim 68, wherein the series of grooves are formed using a toothed gear wheel.
- 70. The method of claim 67, wherein the manipulating step is performed through a series of folding and heat sealing steps.
