Claims
- 1. Apparatus for measuring a condition of excessively close spacing between adjacent tracks on an information recording medium comprising:
- light means for projecting a spot of light onto a recording medium at a predetermined location thereon intermediate a first and a second track;
- photodetector means for providing an electrical signal representative of the amount of light from said spot reflected off of the medium in a predetermined direction;
- tracking means for maintaining a substantially constant lateral spacing of said spot of light from said first track; and
- scanning means for providing relative motion between said spot of light and said medium in a direction parallel to said first track.
- 2. Apparatus according to claim 1 further comprising:
- comparator means connected to said photodetector means for monitoring said electrical signal and providing an output when said electrical signal reaches a predetermined level; and
- indicator means for providing an indication that said comparator means has provided an output signal.
- 3. Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said light means comprises a source of laser light.
- 4. Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said light means further comprises an objective lens for imaging said laser light onto the information surface of said recording medium.
- 5. Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said photodetector means is positioned so as to detect that light from said spot reflected back through said objective lens.
- 6. Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said tracking means comprises:
- second light means for projecting a second and a third spot of light onto different portions of said second track; and
- servo means responsive to the light from said second and said third spots of light reflected off of the medium for maintaining the relative lateral positions of said second and said third spots of light with respect to said second track.
- 7. Apparatus according to claim 6, wherein said second light means comprises a diffraction grating for separating the light from said first light means into three beams of light associated with said first, second, and said third spots of light on said recording medium.
- 8. A method for measuring a condition of excessively close spacing between adjacent tracks on an information recording medium comprising the steps of:
- projecting a spot of light onto said medium at a predetermined location intermediate a first and a second track;
- providing an electrical signal representative of the amount of light from said spot reflected off of the medium in a predetermined direction;
- maintaining a substantially constant lateral spacing of said spot of light from said first track; and
- providing relative motion between said spot of light and said medium in a direction parallel to said first track.
