Claims
- 1. A composition for the storage of whole blood or packed red blood cells comprising sodium citrate, sodium phosphate and a ribose-related compound.
- 2. The composition of claim 1 wherein sodium citrate is 2% to 6%, sodium phosphate is 5 to 20 mM and a ribose-related compound is 5 to 20 mM.
- 3. The composition of claim 2 wherein the ribose-related compound is D-ribose.
- 4. The composition of claim 2 wherein the ribose-related compound is ribose-5-phosphate, ribulose-5-phosphate, ribulose, xylulose, xylose or xylitol.
- 5. A composition for the storage of whole blood or packed red cells comprising 4% sodium citrate, 10 mM sodium phosphate and 15 mM D-ribose.
- 6. A method for rejuvenating red blood cells comprising the addition of sufficient ribose-related compound to a suspension of red blood cells to reach a concentration of 5 to 20 mM and incubating the cells at 37° C. for 10 to 60 minutes.
- 7. The method of claim 6 wherein the ribose-related compound is 10 mM D-ribose and the cells are incubated at 37° C. for 30 minutes.
