Claims
- 1. A video program pay-per-view system for a subscriber comprising:
a memory disc recorder and player situated at the subscriber's location; a first communication channel operative to provide video programming for recording on the disc from a remote location; an output to deliver a selected program from said disc to a display device for viewing; an operator control for enabling a particular program on the disc to be selected for viewing; a second communication channel connecting the subscriber's location to a remote provider; and a controller at the subscriber's location operative to send a signal over the second channel from the subscriber's location to the provider indicating that a particular program on the disc has been selected for viewing.
- 2. The video program pay-per-view system of claim 1 wherein said controller is operative to send a signal over the second channel from the subscriber's location to the provider after playback of a selected program has commenced.
- 3. The video program pay-per-view system of claim 1 wherein the said controller is operative to send a signal over the second channel from the subscriber's location to the provider when a selected program has been viewed substantially in its entirety.
- 4. The video program pay-per-view system of claim 1 wherein said second communication channel is a public telephone system.
- 5. The video program pay-per-view system of claim 1 wherein the choice of video programming transmitted to the subscriber over said first communication channel is under the control of the provider.
- 6. The video program pay-per-view system of claim 1 wherein the video programming provided for recording on the disc from a remote location includes a plurality of discrete programs.
- 7. The video program pay-per-view system of claim 1 wherein the first communication channel is wireless and the second communication channel is a public telephone system.
- 8. A stored program pay-per-view system situated at a subscriber's location, comprising:
an input to receive a pay video program from a provider over a wireless communications link; an output to deliver the program to a display device for viewing; means for locally storing one or more of such programs at the subscriber's location without the subscriber incurring a viewing charge; and means to communicate to the provider over a telephone system that a program has been selected for viewing, enabling the provider to receive the payment associated with viewing of the program.
