Claims
- 1. A magnetic tape comprising:
- adjacent inclined tracks which extend obliquely relative to a longitudinal direction of the tape, the inclined tracks being scannable using rotationally drivable magnetic heads;
- digital video information and digital audio information stored in the inclined tracks;
- first and second longitudinal tracks extending in the longitudinal direction of the tape;
- a first control signal having a first frequency being stored in the first longitudinal track for automatically controlling tape speed in accordance with the first frequency during playback by digital playback apparatus adapted to play back the digital information on the tape;
- a second control signal having a second frequency being stored in the second longitudinal track for automatically controlling tape speed in accordance with the second frequency during any attempted playback of the digital information on the tape using analog playback apparatus operating in accordance with the VHS standard, the second frequency corresponding to an incorrect tape speed when the analog playback apparatus attempts to play back the digital information on the tape in order to avoid undesirable audio output by the analog playback apparatus.
- 2. The tape of claim 1 wherein the first and second frequencies are different from one another.
- 3. The tape of claim 1 wherein the second frequency is either 1/N times a frequency at which the analog playback apparatus would produce a correct tape speed during an attempted play back of the digital information on the tape or else N times the frequency at which the analog playback apparatus would produce a correct tape speed during an attempted play back of the digital information on the tape, where N is an integer greater than 1.
- 4. Apparatus comprising:
- recording means for scanning and recording digital video information and digital audio information on a magnetic tape in adjacent inclined tracks which extend obliquely relative to the longitudinal direction of the tape, the recording means including rotationally drivable magnetic heads;
- means for storing a first control signal having a first frequency in a first longitudinal track extending in the longitudinal direction of the tape for automatically controlling tape speed in accordance with the first frequency during playback using digital playback apparatus adapted to play back the recorded digital information in the inclined tracks;
- means for storing a second control signal having a second frequency in a second longitudinal track extending in the longitudinal direction of the tape for automatically controlling tape speed in accordance with the second frequency during any attempted playback of the digital information on the tape using analog playback apparatus operating in accordance with the VHS standard, the second frequency corresponding to an incorrect tape speed when the analog playback apparatus attempts to play back the digital information on the tape in order to avoid undesirable audio output by the analog playback apparatus.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein the first and second frequencies are different from one another.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein the second frequency is either 1/N times a frequency at which the analog playback apparatus would produce a correct tape speed during an attempted play back of the digital information on the tape or else N times the frequency at which the analog playback apparatus would produce a correct tape speed during an attempted play back of the digital information on the tape, where N is an integer greater than 1.
- 7. Apparatus comprising:
- digital playback apparatus for playing back digital information recorded on a tape and including rotationally drivable magnetic heads for scanning and reading digital video information and digital audio information recorded on the magnetic tape in adjacent inclined tracks which extend obliquely relative to the longitudinal direction of the tape; and
- means for automatically controlling tape speed during the playback of the digital information, in accordance with a first control signal having a first frequency being stored in a first longitudinal track on the magnetic tape and for ignoring a second control signal having a second frequency being stored on a second longitudinal track on the magnetic tape which second frequency for controlling tape speed of an analog playback.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein the first and second frequencies are different from one another.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein the second frequency is either 1/N times a frequency at which the analog playback apparatus would produce a correct tape speed during an attempted play back of the digital information on the tape or else N times the frequency at which the analog playback apparatus would produce a correct tape speed during an attempted play back of the digital information on the tape, where N is an integer greater than 1.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 7 and further comprising a detection device for detecting the presence of the first control signal in the first longitudinal track and the presence of the second control signal in the second longitudinal track for generating an indication that the tape contains digital video information and digital audio information in the inclined tracks thereof.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 7 and further comprising a detection device for detecting the presence of the first control signal in the first longitudinal track for generating an indication that the tape contains digital video information and digital audio information in the inclined tracks thereof.
- 12. A magnetic tape comprising:
- a multitude of adjacent inclined tracks which extend obliquely relative to a longitudinal direction of the tape, the inclined tracks being scannable by using rotationally drivable magnetic heads;
- digital video information and digital audio information stored in the inclined tracks;
- first and second longitudinal tracks extending in the longitudinal direction of the tape;
- first control means including a first control signal having a first frequency being stored in the first longitudinal track, for automatically controlling tape speed in accordance with the first frequency during playback of the digital information on the tape using digital playback apparatus; and
- second control means including a second control signal having a second frequency being stored in the second longitudinal track for automatically controlling tape speed in accordance with the second frequency during any attempted playback of the digital information on the tape using analog playback apparatus operating in accordance with the VHS standard, the second frequency corresponding to an incorrect tape speed when the analog playback apparatus attempts to play back the digital information on the tape in order to avoid undesirable audio output by the analog playback apparatus.
