Claims
- 1. A valve module for use with other similar modules to form a variety of different valve manifold assemblies comprising:
- a) a valve body having a generally rectangular block configuration including a first pair of spaced lateral exterior side walls;
- b) a valve chamber in the body;
- c) a first flow passageway extending through the body between the first pair of lateral exterior side walls;
- d) a second flow passageway extending between the first pair of lateral exterior side walls in parallel flow relationship with said first flow passageway;
- e) separate connecting flow passages joining the first flow passageway and the second flow passageway to respective first and second valve seats in the valve chamber;
- f) a valve means in the valve chamber movable along a straight path between a first position wherein the first valve seat is closed to a second position wherein the first valve seat is opened and the second valve seat is closed; and,
- g) actuating means for moving the valve means between the first and second positions.
- 2. A valve module as defined in claim 1 including a third passageway extending from the exterior of the valve body a third valve seat in the valve chamber and said valve means operable to open and close the third valve seat simultaneously with the first valve seat.
- 3. A valve module as defined in claim 2 wherein the valve means in the valve chamber comprises a poppet member having a first side face carrying first and second seal means for cooperating with the first and second valve seats and a second side face carrying a third seal means for cooperating with the third valve seat.
- 4. A valve module as defined in claim 3 wherein the first and second side faces of the poppet member are generally perpendicular to the straight path.
- 5. A valve module as defined in claim 3 wherein the valve chamber has first and second opposed end walls with the first and second seats located in the first end wall and the third seat located in the second end wall.
- 6. A valve module as defined in claim 5 wherein the poppet member includes an operating stem portion extending through the second end wall centrally of the third seat.
- 7. The valve module of claim 5 wherein said valve chamber is defined by a cavity which extends inwardly of the body and wherein the second end wall is defined by a plug member which is sealingly received in the cavity.
- 8. The valve module of claim 6 wherein the stem portion extends axially of the cavity and wherein the third seal means is disposed about the poppet member stem portion.
- 9. The valve module of claim 8 including an actuator piston joined to the poppet member stem portion and movable axially of the cavity.
- 10. A valve module for use in a process stream selector system comprising:
- a body having a cavity extending axially inward from a first end thereof, said cavity terminating inwardly of the body in an end surface;
- a first fluid passageway communicating from the exterior of the body to the interior of the cavity through the end surface thereof;
- a poppet valve member axially disposed in the cavity and mounted for axial movement, the poppet valve member carrying first seal means for controlling the flow of fluid through the first passageway into the cavity by movement of the poppet valve member axially toward and away from the end surface;
- second and third fluid passageways communicating from the exterior of the body to the interior of the cavity through openings at a separate location spaced axially of the cavity;
- the poppet valve member including a fluid piston for selectively moving the poppet valve member toward and away from the said end surface; and,
- second and third seal means in the cavity for preventing fluid flow through the cavity from the first and second passageways to the third passageway and from the fluid piston to the third passageway.
- 11. A valve module as defined in claim 10 wherein said poppet valve member carries said second and third seal means at axially spaced locations on opposite sides of the opening into the cavity of the third passageway.
- 12. A valve module as defined in claim 11 wherein biasing means are provided to maintain said poppet valve member continually biased toward said end surface.
- 13. A valve module as defined in claim 12 wherein pressure fluid supply means are provided for moving said fluid piston to move the poppet valve member against the biasing means.
- 14. A valve module as defined in claim 13 wherein said first seal means comprises a seal ring on the poppet valve.
- 15. A single block-and-bleed valve module, comprising:
- (a) a block valve;
- (b) a sample-fluid compartment;
- (c) a vent compartment;
- (d) an internal pneumatic actuator comprising
- (d.sub.1) an actuator piston, and
- (d.sub.2) an actuator compartment constructed and arranged to receive a compressed gas from an external source;
- (e) a sample-inlet first passageway;
- (f) a sample-outlet second passageway;
- (g) a third passageway;
- (h) a fourth passageway;
- (i) first biasing means for closing the block valve by urging the piston in a first direction;
- (j) second biasing means, including a compressed gas, for opening the valve by urging the piston in a second direction; and
- (k) a body having a cavity therein for housing the block valve, the sample-fluid compartment, the vent compartment, the pneumatic actuator, and the first, second, third, and fourth passageways;
- the block valve being so constructed and arranged that, when closed, fluid communication is blocked between the inlet passageway and the sample-fluid compartment; when open, the inlet passageway, the sample-fluid compartment, and the outlet passageway are in fluid communication; the inlet passageway providing means for fluid communication from the external environment to the sample-fluid compartment; the outlet passageway providing means for fluid communication from the sample-fluid compartment to the external environment; the third passageway providing means for introducing a compressed gas into the actuator compartment; the fourth passageway providing fluid communication between the vent compartment and an external area suitable for the safe disposal of fluids contained within the valve module; the actuator piston being formed by an enlargement of the width of the poppet near the longitudional center of the poppet; the first, second, and third O-rings providing fluid sealing between the sample-fluid compartment, the vent compartment, the actuator compartment, and a compartment housing the first biasing means; the pressure within the vent compartment and the fourth passageway normally being maintained at a level lower than or equal to that of the sample-fluid compartment, the sample-inlet passageway, the sample-outlet passageway, and the actuator compartment to prevent fugitive emission of the sample fluid or of the compressed gas from the module into unprotected areas of the external environment.
- 16. The valve module of claim 15, wherein:
- (l) the first biasing means include a compression spring;
- (m) the valve includes an O-ring in axial alignment with the inlet passageway; and
- (n) the module includes a poppet axially disposed within the body cavity, the poppet having a groove in the lower surface of the poppet for retaining the O-ring, the poppet being driven in the first and second directions by the actuator piston;
- a portion of the O-ring which extends beyond the retaining groove, in combination with the lower surface of the sample-fluid compartment, forming the block valve.
