Claims
- 1. A method of constructing a light-weight stringed musical instrument comprising the steps of, providing a wood instrument core that is for forming at least the body of the instrument; providing a laminate secured to the outer surface of said wood instrument core the laminate including, a strengthening layer, a finish layer, and a means for displaying one or more visual images; disposing said means for displaying one or more visual images between at least part of the strengthening layer and at least part of the finish layer; providing strings; and securing the strings to the instrument.
- 2. A method as set forth in claim 1 wherein the step of providing a strengthening layer includes providing a thin layer of carbon fiber.
- 3. A method as set forth in claim 2 wherein the step of providing a finish layer includes providing a thin layer of a fiberglass sheet.
- 4. A method as set forth in claim 3 further comprising providing a resin material in the laminate and applying heat to cure the layers and form the outer surface of the instrument.
- 5. A method as set forth in claim 1, wherein the step of providing a means for displaying one or more visual images includes applying one or more decals between the strengthening and finish layers.
- 6. A method as set forth in claim 1, wherein the step of providing a means for displaying one or more visual images includes providing a layer bearing one or more visual images, said layer disposed between at least part of said strengthening layer and at least part of said finish layer.
- 7. A method as set forth in claim 4 including applying heat while subjecting the instrument to vacuum by disposing the instrument in a vacuum bag.
- 8. The method of claim 1 further comprising the steps of:
- providing a neck having a wood instrument core and a laminate including a strengthening layer and a finish layer, the laminate forming a curved surface;
- providing a plurality of hard metal, tangless frets on top of the curved surface of the neck, each fret extending under each of the strings; and
- adhesively securing the frets to the neck.
- 9. A method of constructing a light-weight stringed musical instrument comprising the steps of, providing a wood instrument core, said core having an outer surface and including at least a body of the instrument, providing a neck to said core, providing a strengthening layer to said body and neck, providing to the strengthening layer a means for displaying one or more visual images, providing a finish layer to said means for displaying one or more visual images, securing said strengthening layer, said means for displaying one or more visual images, and said finish layer as a laminate to the outer surface of said wood instrument core, providing a resin material to the laminate and applying heat while subjecting the instrument to vacuum by disposing the instrument in a vacuum bag to cure the layers and to form an outer surface of the instrument, providing strings, and securing the strings to the instrument, wherein the step of providing a finish layer includes providing a thin layer of a fiberglass sheet and the step of providing a strengthening layer includes providing a thin layer of carbon fiber.
- 10. A method of constructing a light-weight stringed musical instrument, comprising providing a soft wood instrument core having an outer surface and including at least a body of said instrument, providing a strengthening layer, providing to at least part of said strengthening layer a means for displaying one or more visual images, providing a finish layer to at least part of said means for displaying visual images, securing said strengthening layer, said display means and said finish layer as a laminate to the outer surface of said wood core, applying to said laminate a resin, applying heat and vacuum to cure said resin to form an outer surface of the instrument, providing strings and securing the strings to the instrument.
- 11. A method of constructing a light-weight stringed musical instrument comprising providing a wood instrument core having an outer surface and including a body and a neck of the instrument, providing a strengthening layer, a means for displaying one or more visual images, and a finish layer as a laminate to the outer surface of said wood core, impregnating said laminate with a high temperature resin, applying heat to cure said resin, subjecting the instrument to a vacuum while applying heat to secure the resin and secure said laminate to the instrument, providing strings and securing the strings to the instrument.
- 12. A light weight stringed musical instrument comprising, a wood instrument core that is for forming at least a body and neck of the instrument; a strengthening layer disposed over the core; a means for displaying one or more visual images disposed over at least part of said strengthening layer; a finish layer disposed over said means for displaying one or more visual images, said finish layer forming an outer surface of the instrument and said images visible through said cuter surface; strings; and means for securing the strings to the instrument.
- 13. A light-weight musical instrument as set forth in claim 12 wherein said strengthening layer includes a thin layer of carbon fiber.
- 14. A light weight musical instrument as set forth in claim 13 wherein the finish layer includes a thin layer of a fiberglass sheet.
- 15. A light-weight musical instrument as set forth in claim 14 including a resin material as part of the laminate and cured upon application of heat to form a hard outer finish surface.
- 16. An instrument of claim 12 wherein the means for displaying one or more visual images comprises one or more decals disposed between the strengthening and finish layers.
- 17. An instrument as set forth in claim 12, wherein the means for displaying one or more visual images comprises a separate layer disposed between at least part of said strengthening layer and finish layer, said separate layer bearing one or more visual images.
- 18. The stringed musical instrument of claim 12 wherein the neck has a non-grooved curved surface, the instrument further comprising a plurality of hard metal frets on top of the non-grooved curved surface of the neck, each fret secured to the neck and extending under each of the strings.
- 19. The stringed musical instrument of claim 18 further comprising roughened strips on the non-grooved curved surface.
- 20. The stringed musical instrument of claim 12 wherein the laminate further comprises a circuit board layer, the instrument further comprising a plurality of frets provided on the neck, the frets each consisting essentially of metal, and means for electrically coupling each fret to the circuit board.
- 21. A light-weight stringed musical instrument comprising, a wood instrument core that is for forming at least a body of the instrument; a neck attached to the body; a laminate disposed to cover at least portions of both said body and neck, said laminate comprising: a carbon fiber strengthening layer, a means for displaying one or more visual images disposed to cover at least portions of said carbon fiber strengthening layer, a fiberglass finish layer disposed over said display means, said fiberglass finish layer forming an outer surface of the instrument, and a resin material disposed in the laminate; strings; and means for securing the strings to the instrument.
- 22. The instrument of claim 21, wherein the means for displaying one or more visual images comprises one or more decals.
- 23. The instrument of claim 21, wherein the means for displaying one or more visual images comprises a layer bearing one or more images.
- 24. The instrument of claim 21, wherein the wood instrument core comprises a soft wood core selected from the group consisting of Douglas fir and redwood.
- 25. A light-weight stringed musical instrument, comprising a wood instrument core having an outer surface in the shape of a body and neck of the instrument; a laminate secured under vacuum force to at least a portion of the outer surface of the wood instrument core, said laminate comprising: a carbon fiber strengthening layer disposed over the outer surface of the wooden core, a means for displaying one or more visual images disposed over at least part of the carbon fiber strengthening layer, and a fiberglass finish layer disposed over said display means; strings, and means for securing the strings to the instrument.
- 26. The stringed musical instrument of claim 25, further comprising a fret board adhesively secured to the neck, said fret board comprising a laminate and a plurality of separate hard metal frets adhesively secured to the laminated fret board; said laminate including a carbon fiber layer, a means for displaying one or more visual images disposed over at least part of said carbon fiber layer, and a fiberglass layer disposed over said display means.
- 27. The musical instrument of claim 25 wherein the means for displaying one or more visual images is selected from the group consisting of a layer bearing one or more visual images and at least one decal.
