Claims
- 1. A structural system for a vehicle, comprising:
a) a first structural member; b) a vehicle component; c) an attachment assembly for attaching said first structural member and said vehicle component, said attachment assembly being configured, dimensioned and positioned to reinforce a load bearing area of said first structural member and to distribute a load of said vehicle component over said first structural member.
- 2. The system as in 1, wherein said first structural member is a cross car structural beam having an air duct assembly.
- 3. The system as in 1, wherein said vehicle component is a steering column.
- 4. The system as in 3, further comprising:
d) a load plate being configured, dimensioned and positioned to distribute the load of said vehicle component, said load plate securing said attachment assembly to said structural member.
- 5. The system as in 4, wherein said load plate is disposed within a plurality of structural ribs, said structural ribs being coupled to said first structural member.
- 6. The system as in 5, wherein said first structural member comprises an air duct assembly formed of a plurality of sections, said plurality of structural ribs being formed on one of said sections in said load bearing area, said load plate being disposed in a cavity formed between said plurality of sections, said sections mating with each other to form said air duct assembly.
- 7. The system as in 5, wherein said structural ribs extend upwardly from a first surface of said first structural member, said structural ribs being spaced so as to permit said load plate to nest within said structural ribs so that a load applied to said first structural member by an attachment of said vehicle component thereto will be dispersed along said first structural member by said load plate and said structural ribs.
- 8. The system as in 5, wherein said structural ribs are arranged in an “X” pattern across a first surface of said first structural member, said load plate being nested within said structural ribs.
- 9. The system as in 4, wherein said load plate includes one or more fastener members removably connected to said load plate.
- 10. The system as in 9, wherein said plurality of fastener members comprises a plurality of threaded studs.
- 11. The system as in 9, wherein said one or more fastener members includes one or more fasteners for threadably engaging said one or more fastener members.
- 12. The system as in 11, wherein said one or more fasteners comprises one or more bolts, said bolts being integrally connected to said load plate.
- 13. The system as in 9, wherein said one or more fastener members intimately attaches said load plate to said first structural member and said first structural member to said structural member.
- 14. The system as in 9, wherein said steering column includes a steering column support which is attached by said fastener members at a first side to said steering column and at a second side to said vehicle component.
- 15. The system as in 4, wherein said load plate is formed of a metal.
- 16. The system as in 4, wherein said load plate includes opposing first and second recessed sections, said first and second recessed sections each including a predetermined number of fastener members, each of said recessed sections having a lower side where said fastener members are formed and which seats against a lower side of said first structural member.
- 17. The system as in 3, wherein said steering column includes a steering column support assembly coupled thereto, said attachment assembly being connected at a first side to said structural member and at a second side to said steering column support assembly.
- 18. The system as in 4, wherein said vehicle component has one or more first openings which receive one or more fasteners extending from said load plate, said first structural member having one or more second openings formed therein and aligned with said first openings to permit said fasteners to extend through said first and second openings and connect to said load plate.
- 19. A structural system for a vehicle, comprising:
a) a first composite structural member; b) a vehicle component; c) an attachment member for attaching said first structural member and said vehicle component, said attachment member being configured, dimensioned and positioned to reinforce a load bearing area of said first structural member and to distribute a load of said vehicle component over said first composite structural member, said attachment member being formed from the same composite material as said first composite member.
- 20. The system as in 19, wherein said vehicle component is a steering column.
- 21. The system as in 20, wherein said attachment member has a fiber reinforced area, said fiber reinforced area being secured to said first composite structural member.
- 22. The system as in 21, wherein said composite structural member includes a duct system for providing air to an internal compartment of said vehicle, said composite structural member also having a fiber reinforced area being secured to said attachment member.
- 23. The system as in 22, wherein said first composite structural member is a cross car structural beam.
- 24. The system as in 22, wherein said attachment member is secured at a first side to said first composite structural member and at a second side to said steering column.
- 25. The system as in 23, wherein said first side is integrally attached to said structural member and said second side is releasably mounted to said steering column.
- 26. The system as in 23, wherein said first side includes mountings for mechanically fastening said steering column to said cross car structural beam.
- 27. The system as in 23, wherein said steering column support unit includes an attachment portion for facilitating the attachment of said steering column to said cross car structural beam.
- 28. The system as in 23, wherein said steering column is attached to said cross car structural beam by a chemical, mechanical, or thermal means.
- 29. The system as in 21, wherein said attachment member is composed of a plastic or a metal.
