Claims
- 1. A catheter assembly, comprising:an elongate sheath having a lumen, the lumen in communication with a first distal opening proximate a distal end of the sheath; an operative member adapted to be introduced through the sheath lumen, the operative member including a proximal portion having an axis, and a distal portion having an axis, the distal portion extendable from, and retractable into, the sheath lumen through the first opening, the distal portion axis forming an angle with the proximal portion axis when the distal portion is extended from the sheath lumen; an operative element carried on the distal portion of the operative member; and an anchor member adapted to be introduced through the sheath lumen, the anchor member having a distal portion extendable from, and retractable into, a distal end of the sheath lumen, the distal portion of the anchor member having an axis which forms an angle with the axis of the distal portion of the operative member when the respective anchor member and operative member distal portions are extended from the sheath lumen.
- 2. The catheter assembly of claim 1, wherein the anchor member is adapted to be extendable from, and retractable into, the first opening.
- 3. The catheter assembly of claim 1, the sheath lumen in communication with a second opening proximate the distal end of the sheath, wherein the anchor member is adapted to be extendable from, and retractable into, the second opening.
- 4. The catheter assembly of claim 1, the operative member having a lumen, the operative member lumen in communication with an opening proximate a juncture of the proximal and distal portions of the operative member, wherein the anchor member is adapted to be extendable from, and retractable into, the operative member lumen opening.
- 5. The catheter assembly of claim 1, wherein the operative element is an electrode element.
- 6. The catheter assembly of claim 1, the distal portion of the operative member comprising a spline element enclosed within an electrically insulating sleeve.
- 7. The catheter assembly of claim 6, the spline element comprising a resilient material in a curvilinear shape.
- 8. The catheter assembly of claim 6, the spline element having a circular cross-section.
- 9. The catheter assembly of claim 6, the spline element having a rectangular cross-section.
- 10. The catheter assembly of claim 4, the operative member bendable about the juncture, the assembly further comprising a pull wire coupled to the distal portion of the operative member.
- 11. The catheter assembly of claim 1, the anchor member having a blunt distal end.
- 12. The catheter assembly of claim 1, the anchor member comprising a tubular body defining an interior lumen.
- 13. The catheter assembly of claim 12, further comprising a guide wire adapted to be extended through the interior lumen of the tubular body.
- 14. The catheter assembly of claims 1, further comprising a control mechanism for positioning the anchor member.
- 15. The catheter assembly of claim 1, further comprising a control mechanism for positioning the operative member.
- 16. The catheter assembly of claim 1, further comprising an inflatable balloon carried on the distal portion of the anchor member, the balloon adapted to be inflated within a vessel or cavity.
- 17. The catheter assembly of claim 16, the anchor member comprising a tubular body defining an interior lumen, the inflatable balloon having an inlet at a proximal end of the balloon, an outlet at a distal end of the balloon, and the interior lumen extending through the balloon between the outlet and the inlet.
- 18. The catheter assembly of claim 17, further comprising a guide wire adapted to be extended through the interior lumen of the tubular body and through the balloon lumen.
- 19. The catheter assembly of claim 1, the operative member adapted to rotate about its proximal portion axis.
- 20. The catheter assembly of claim 1, the operative member having an assymetric exterior contour matching an assymetric interior contour of the sheath lumen, such that the operative member is prevented from rotating about its proximal portion axis.
- 21. The catheter assembly of claim 1, the distal portion of the sheath adapted to be rotated about an axis of the sheath, wherein the distal portion of the operative member rotates with the distal portion of the sheath when the distal portion of the operative member is extended from the first opening.
