Claims
- 1. An electrical component comprising a dielectric tube, at least one electrical conductor on the outer surface of the tube, a dielectric sleeve surrounding the tube, and a solid filler between the tube and the sleeve, the filler bonding the tube to the sleeve.
- 2. The component of claim 1 wherein the solid filler is a polymeric adhesive.
- 3. The component of claim 1 wherein the solid filler is an elastomer.
- 4. The component of claim 3 wherein the solid filler is a silicone elastomer.
- 5. The component of claim 1 wherein the electrical component is a fuse, the electrical conductor including a fuse link.
- 6. The component of claim 1 wherein the tube is hollow and is square in cross-section.
- 7. The component of claim 1 wherein at least one axial end of the component is metallized across an axial end of the tube, the sleeve, and the filler.
- 8. The component of claim 7 wherein the filler exposes an axially extending surface of the conductor at the at least one end of the tube, the metallizing extending over the exposed surface of the conductor.
- 9. The component of claim 1 wherein the filler leaves no passages larger than about twenty angstroms between the sleeve and the tube.
- 10. A sub-miniature electrical component comprising a dielectric tube having ends and an outer axial surface between the ends, at least one electrical conductor on the outer surface of the tube, and a dielectric adhesive surrounding the tube, the component having a diameter less than 0.1" and having a length substantially less than its diameter.
- 11. The component of claim 10 further including a sleeve surrounding the tube, the dielectric adhesive comprising a filler means between the tube and the sleeve for providing a barrier between axial ends of the component.
- 12. An electrical component comprising a metallized tube, a sleeve surrounding the metallized tube, a filler between the tube and sleeve, and metallizing covering at least one end of the tube, the sleeve, and the filler.
- 13. An electrical component comprising a metallized hollow tube, a sleeve surrounding the metallized tube, and a dielectric filler between the tube and sleeve and also inside the hollow tube.
- 14. An electrical component comprising a dielectric substrate; at least one electrical conductor on an outer surface of the substrate, the conductor extending to an edge of the substrate; a dielectric cover over the substrate; a solid filler between the substrate and the cover, the solid filler exposing a small portion of a surface of the conductor adjacent the edge of the substrate; and metallizing on the edge of the substrate, the metallizing extending around the edge of the substrate and over the exposed surface of the conductor.
- 15. In combination, an electrical component having a plurality of leads, and a fuse interposed in at least one of the leads, the fuse comprising a dielectric tube, the tube having ends and an outer axial surface between the ends, at least one electrical conductor on the outer surface of the tube, the conductor extending from end-to-end of the tube, the conductor comprising fusible link means responding to overcurrent conditions to break electrical continuity of said lead, and a dielectric adhesive surrounding the tube.
- 16. The combination of claim 15 wherein the fuse has a diameter less than 0.1" and a length substantially less than its diameter.
- 17. The combination of claim 15 wherein the fuse further comprises a glass sleeve surrounding the adhesive material.
- 18. The combination of claim 15 wherein the component is an electrolytic capacitor.
- 19. The combination of claim 15 wherein the component is a power transistor.
- 20. The combination of claim 15 wherein the fuse has an axis of symmetry and the lead is attached at right angles to the axis of symmetry.
- 21. The combination of claim 20 wherein the component has an axis of symmetry, the fuse being attached coaxially to the component.
- 22. The combination of claim 15 wherein the component and leads are adapted for surface-mounting, the leads comprising the flat strips having coplanar portions below the component, the fuse being interposed below the component and above the coplanar portion of one of the leads.
- 23. The combination of claim 15 including a molded housing encapsulating both the component and the fuse.
- 24. A sub-miniature electric fuse comprising a dielectric substrate, an electrical conductor metallized on the substrate, the conductor including a fusible link, a dielectric adhesive over the link, the adhesive bonding to the link and to the substrate, the adhesive reacting with the link when the link is exposed to overcurrent conditions and producing a permanently open link having a resistance in excess of ten megohms.
- 25. The fuse of claim 24 wherein the link is formed of aluminum or aluminum alloy and the adhesive is a silicone elastomer.
- 26. An electric fuse comprising a dielectric substrate, an electrical conductor on the substrate, the conductor including a fusible link, a polymeric dielectric adhesive over the link, the adhesive bonding to the link and to the substrate, the adhesive reacting with the link when the ink is exposed to overcurrent conditions and producing a permanently open link.
- 27. The electric fuse of claim 26 wherein the conductor includes end portions, the fusible link differing from the end portions in at least one of cross-sectional area and composition, the dielectric adhesive covering the link and at least a part of the end portions of the conductor and isolating the ink from ambient, the adhesive maintaining isolation of the ink area from ambient when the link is exposed to overcurrent conditions.
- 28. The fuse of claim 50 wherein the adhesive covers only a part of the end portions of the conductors, exposed parts of the end portions being electrically connected to electrical terminals.
- 29. The fuse of claim 27 wherein the adhesive is a silicone elastomer.
- 30. The fuse of claim 29 wherein the link is formed of a material selected from the group consisting of aluminum and aluminum alloys.
- 31. An electrical fuse comprising a dielectric tube, at least one electrical conductor, the conductor comprising a fusible link on the outer surface of the tube, and a silicone adhesive surrounding the tube and bonded to the tube and to the conductor.
- 32. An electrical fuse comprising a dielectric tube having at least one flat face extending axially of the tube, an electrical conductor extending axially along said flat face of the tube, the conductor comprising a fusible link, and a generally round, tubular, homogeneous dielectric adhesive surrounding the tube and bonded to the tube and to the conductor, the dielectric adhesive being thickest above the center of the link.
- 33. An electrical component comprising a dielectric substrate having a generally planar face and an end generally perpendicular to the face, the face and end meeting at an edge, a conductor metallized to the face and extending to the edge of the substrate, a dielectric adhesive bonded to the face and covering a portion of the conductor, the adhesive terminating short of the edge to expose an end of the conductor adjacent the edge, and metallization on the end of the substrate, the metallization extending around the edge and over the exposed conductor to form a contact for the component.
- 34. The component of claim 33 wherein the substrate is a tube, the face constituting an axial face of the tube.
- 35. The component of claim 34 wherein the electrical component is a fuse, wherein the conductor extends from end-to-end of the tube and comprises a fusible link intermediate its ends, wherein the adhesive terminates short of each end of the tube to expose an end of the conductor adjacent each end of the tube, and metallization covering both ends of the tube and the exposed conductor to form a pair of contacts for the component.
- 36. An electric fuse comprising a dielectric substrate, an electrical conductor on the substrate, the conductor including a fusible link, and a dielectric synthetic polymer adhesive over the link, the adhesive bonding to the link and to the substrate.
- 37. The electric fuse of claim 36 wherein the conductor includes end portions, the fusible link differing from the end portions in at least one of cross-sectional area and composition, the dielectric adhesive covering the link and at least a part of the end portions of the conductor and isolating the link from ambient, the adhesive maintaining isolation of the link area from ambient when the link is exposed to overcurrent conditions.
- 38. The fuse of claim 37 wherein the adhesive covers only a part of the end portions of the conductors, exposed parts of the end portions being electrically connected to electrical terminals.
- 39. The fuse of claim 36 wherein the adhesive is a silicone elastomer.
- 40. The fuse of claim 39 wherein the link is formed of a material selected from the group consisting of aluminum and aluminum alloys.
- 41. The fuse of claim 34 wherein the dielectric adhesive is thickest above the center of the link.
- 42. The fuse of claim 36 wherein the substrate is a tube.
- 43. An overcurrent protective fuse comprising a conductor including a fusible link part deposited on a dielectric substrate, the fusible link part consisting essentially of a material selected from the group consisting of aluminum and aluminum alloys, and a coating of silicone elastomer in contact with the link part, the silicone being an adhesive which adheres both to the substrate and to the link.
- 44. An electrical component comprising a tube having a metallized axially-extending wall, characterized by a polymeric coating over the wall and a metallized terminal covering at lest one end of the tube in electrical contact with the metallized wall, the metallized terminal also covering at least one end of the coating.
- 45. An electrical component comprising a tube having a metallized axially-extending wall, characterized by a polymeric coating over the wall, a metallized terminal covering at least one end of the tube and at least one end of the coating, and a sleeve over the tube, the coating being a filler between the tube and the sleeve, the metallized terminal covering an end of the tube, the sleeve, and the filler.
- 46. An overcurrent protective fuse comprising a conductor including a fusible link part, the fusible link part consisting essentially of a homogeneous current-carrying metal deposited on a dielectric substrate, and a coating of silicone elastomer in contact with the link part.
- 47. The fuse of claim 46 wherein the silicone is an adhesive which adheres both to the substrate and to the link.
- 48. The fuse of claim 47 wherein the dielectric substrate is glass.
- 49. The fuse of claim 43 wherein the dielectric substrate is glass.
