Claims
- 1. An electro-optical modulation system for a sub-octave remote antenna optical communications link that conveys information bearing signals between an antenna and a control facility, the system comprising:
- an electrical amplifier providing an information bearing electrical signal;
- a laser for generating an optical carrier signal;
- a first electro-optical modulator for intensity modulating the optical carrier signal in response to the electrical signal;
- a second electro-optical modulator, cascade connected with the first modulator, for intensity modulating the optical carrier signal in response to the electrical signal;
- an optical fiber cable for conveying the intensity modulated optical carrier signal between the antenna and the control facility; and
- an electro-optical detector for detecting the intensity modulated optical carrier signal transmitted through the optical fiber cable and converting the intensity modulated optical carrier signal into the electrical signal.
- 2. An electro-optical modulation system as described in claim 1, wherein the first and the second modulators are Mach-Zehnder-type interferometric modulators.
- 3. An electro-optical modulation system as described in claim 2, wherein the first and the second modulators are adapted to have balanced optical power in each arm.
- 4. An electro-optical modulation system as described in claim 2, wherein one of the first and the second modulators is biased between 90.degree.<.O slashed.<270.degree.to decrease total optical power.
- 5. An electro-optical modulation system as described in claim 1, wherein the first modulator and the second modulator are collectively tuned to minimize only third-order distortion.
- 6. An electro-optical modulation system as described in claim 1, wherein a frequency range of second-order distortion introduced by the modulation device is outside a band of a fundamental.
