Claims
- 1. A subcutaneous drug delivery device comprising:
- a) a housing with a bore extending along a longitudinal axis of the housing and a track extending parallel to the bore, said track having an elongate housing slot extending along the longitudinal axis
- b) a piston having a distal end with a piston notch at said piston distal end forming a platform for supporting said drug;
- c) a cannula mounted concentric with the piston within the bore and extending along the longitudinal axis thereof with a distal end of the cannula extending beyond the piston notch at said piston distal end to concentrically enclose the drug;
- d) a driving member slideably engaged in said track for longitudinal movement therein, the driving member having an elongate driving member slot extending along the longitudinal axis, the driving member slot having a notch formed therein;
- e) a piston drive pin for engaging the notch in the driving member slot for advancing the piston, the piston drive pin extending from the piston in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis through the housing slot and the driving member slot; such that, as the driving member is moved distally along the track toward the piston distal end, the notch in the driving member slot is engaged by the piston drive pin and the piston is extended until the piston drive pin reaches the distal end of the housing slot whereupon the piston notch extends beyond the distal endof the cannula leaving the drug exposed so that the drug can be delivered.
- 2. The device of claim 1 wherein the proximal terminus of the piston is located within a piston grip.
- 3. The device of claim 1 wherein the notch in the proximal slot is located at the distal end of the proximal slot for engaging the piston drive pin.
- 4. The device of claim 1 wherein the housing has finger grips extending therefrom transverse the longitudinal axis.
- 5. A subcutaneous drug delivery device comprising:
- a) a housing with a bore extending along a longitudinal axis of the housing and a track extending parallel to the bore, said track having an elongate proximal housing slot and an elongate distal housing slot extending along the longitudinal axis;
- b) a piston having a distal end with a piston notch at said piston distal end forming a platform for supporting said drug;
- c) a cannula mounted concentric with the piston within the bore and extending along the longitudinal axis thereof and beyond the piston notch at said piston distal end to concentrically enclose the drug;
- d) a driving member slideably engaged in said track for longitudinal movement therein, the driving member having a proximal elongate driving member slot with a notch formed therein and a distal elongate driving member slot with a notch formed therein, said slots extending along the longitudinal axis;
- e) a piston drive pin for engaging the notchain the proximal driving member slot, the piston drive pin extending from the piston in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis through the proximal housing slot and the proximal driving member slot;
- f) a cannula drive pin for engaging the notch in the distal driving member slot for advancing the cannula, the cannula drive pin extending from the cannula in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis through the distal housing slot and the distal driving member slot whereby as the driving member is moved distally along the track toward the piston distal end, the notch in the proximal driving member slot is engaged by the piston drive pin and the piston is extended until the piston drive pin reaches the distal end of the proximal housing slot whereupon the piston notch extends beyond the distal end of the cannula leaving the drug exposed so that the drug can be delivered and as the driving member is moved further alongthe track the notch in the distal driving member slot is engaged by the cannula drive pin and the cannula is extended until the cannula drive pin reaches the distal end of the distal housing slot.
- 6. A process for delivering a drug to a site within the body of an individual comprising:
- a) assembling a cannula concentrically about a piston with a platform formed on a distal portion of the piston, the piston extending within a longitudinal bore of a housing for longitudinal movement along said bore;
- b) providing a drug on the platform;
- c) engaging a piston drive pin extending perpendicularly from the piston with a driving member having an elongate proximal slot, the proximal driving member slot having a notch formed wherein, the driving member being mounted on a track in the housing for longitudinal movement, the track having an elongate housing slot;
- d) advancing the driving member along the track toward the piston distal end, the notch in the proximal driving member slot engaging the piston drive pin, the piston extending until the piston drive pin reaches the distal end of the proximal housing slot at which point the piston is advanced exposing the platform for delivery of the drug.
- 7. A process for delivering a drug to a site within the body comprising;
- a) assembling a cannula concentrically about a piston within a longitudinally extending bore of a housing for longitudinal movement along said bore, said piston having a tip portion with a drug disposed thereon and enclosed by said cannula;
- b) engaging a piston drive pin extending perpendicularly from the piston with a driving member having an elongate proximal slot and an elongate distal slot, the proximal driving member slot having a notch formed therein, the driving member being mounted on a track in the housing for longitudinal movement, the track having an elongate proximal housing;
- c) advancing the driving member and thereby the piston tip portion along the track toward the piston distal end, the notch in the proximal driving member slot engaging the piston drive pin, extending until the piston drive pin reaches the distal end of the proximal housing slot at which point the piston tip is exposed beyond the cannula for delivery of the drug.
- 8. An instrument for advancing a driven member into body tissue comprising:
- a) a housing with a bore extending along a longitudinal axis of the housing and a track extending parallel to the bore, said track having an elongate housing slot extending along the longitudinal axis;
- b) a driven member having a proximal end and a distal end;
- c) a cannula mounted concentic with the driven member within the bore and extending along the longitudinal axis thereof;
- d) a driving member slideably engaged in said track for longitudinal movement therein, the driving member having an elongate driving member slot extending along the longitudinal axis, the driving member slot having a notch formed therein;
- e) a drive pin for engaging the notch in the driving member slot for advancing the driven member, the drive pin extending from the driven member in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis through the housing slot and the driving member slot; such that, as the driving member is moved distally along the track toward the distal end of the track the driven member is extended until the drive pin reaches the distal end of the housing slot.
- 9. An instrument for one-handed advancement of a driven member into body tissue comprising:
- a) a housing with a bore extending along a longitudinal axis of the housing and a track extending parallel to the bore, said track having an elongate proximal housing slot and an elongate distal housing slot extending along the longitudinal axis;
- b) a driven member having a proximal end;
- c) a cannula mounted concentric with the driven member within the bore and extending along the longitudinal axis thereof;
- d) a driving member slideably engaged in said track for longtiudinal movement therein, the driving member having a proximal elongate driving member slot with a notch formed therein and a distal elongate driving member slot with a notch formed therein, said slots extending along the longitudinal axis;
- e) a drive member drive pin for engaging the notch in the proximal driving member slot for advancing the driven member, the drive member drive pin extending from the driven member in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis through the proximal housing slot and the proximal driving member slot;
- f) a cannula drive pin for engaging the notch in the distal driving member slot for advancing the cannula, the cannula drive pin extending from the cannula in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis through the distal housing slot and the distal driving member slot whereby as the driving member is moved distally along the track toward the driven member distal end, the notch in the proximal driving member slot is engaged by the driven member drive pin and the driven member is extended until the driven member drive pin reaches the distal end of the proximal housing slot and as the driving member is moved further along the track the notch in the distal driving member slot is engaged by the cannula drive pin and the cannula is extended until the cannula drive pin reaches the distal end of the distal housing slot.
- 10. A process for one-handed advancement of a driven member into a body site comprising:
- a) with one-hand, engaging a driving member;
- b) driving the driven member with the driving member by engaging a driven member drive pin extending perpendicularly from the driven member with the driving member, said driving member having an elongate proximal slot and an elongate distal slot, the proximal driving member slot having a notch formed therein, the driving member being mounted on a track in a housing for longitudinal movement, the track having an elongate proximal housing slot, the driven member having a cannula concentrically surrounding it within a bore in the housing; and
- c) advancing the driving member and thereby a tip portion of the driven member along the track toward the piston distal end, the notch in the proximal driving member slot engaging the driven member drive pin, the driven member extending until the driven member drive pin reaches the distal end of the proximal housing slot at which point the tip portion is exposed beyond the cannula.
